Any Recommendations on Self Composting Toilets?

Hi, has anyone got these in there house please? Heard on ABC radio talk back show the other morning how good they are. There is heaps of different ones available & apparently all good.

Building a house next year & thinking of installing these. Any recommendations please?

Thanks, Jenny

Your are disconnecting from the grid?

    • Yes we already have off grid solar in Vic & definitely in NSW when we build.

  • Dig a hole in the back yard?

  • How do these work?

Do you take a dump in your backyard in a hole and create the compost?

The one I used in Kiwiland, it looked like anything organic can go into the toilet, so includes food waste. Waste piles up in what seemed like a huge tank (size of a small room), and once it's full enough, whoever draws the short straw shovels it out and use as compost..
Each to their own, but not my cup of tea..

So it is a toilet inside the house and you take dumps in it and also put food waste in it? Until it reaches max level and needs to be shoveled out?

        • Yeah. That's how my Air B&B host explained it to me.
Might just be my paranoia, but I swore every time I used it to do a number 2, I could feel bugs buzzing past .. as long as they don't buzz in
Second place I stayed at with a composting toilet was much cleaner, but still..

Look up humanure. Similar principles to composting.

    • thanks will do

  • Op is your main purpose to help the environment by composting poop?

No we will have to have septic as out of town, & where we are now cost us about $15,000 to put one in.
Don't know costs for self composting but think it's likely a lot cheaper than that

  • I don't have much but anecdotal information, but I thought i would add it.

Besides the occasional composting toilet at a music festival or a remote beach, I've used composting toilets occasionally.

When we were building an off grid house we built a "long drop" which was just a bigass hole in the ground with a wooden cover. It wasn't great but hey it was temporary. They (my parents) ended up putting in a septic system.

I've used a composting toilet on a boat and it wasn't too bad- once you get over the "gross" factor it was absolutely fine- we didnt spend long in the toilet mind you, we were on a boat!

Knowing you are trying to avoid a septic- something that might be worth looking into would be an anerobic digestor for your waste? I think once it has been treated by that the effluent only needs a "french drain" as opposed to a full septic. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link in comments? But I would google "home biogas offgrid toilet" there's a company out of Israel that makes a low water toilet for off grid situations. You could do it without buying their setup, but its interesting to see how theirs is done!

You're probably also across this but the "permies" forum will have lots of pro composting toilet commentary, and tips.
