I'm surprised these still get made

      COMMMANDO 8 HAS ARRIVED!

12,000 BTU's of raw cooling power!

      • +1

slams into window and drops the blinds
        INSTALLED!

    • +9

      Easy to install.
      One unit.
      Saves space.

      • -1

Much harder to install than a portable air con. Got to build some kind of frame or buy an air con bracket to support the heavy weight of it.

        • +4

But easier than a split system.

        • +12

          Portable AC horribly inefficient

    • +1

Yeah, you'd be surprised! A lot of people still really love them and Kelvinator in particular is still coming out with new models of this type of A/C!

    • +1

These are pretty popular in the US, split systems aren't. They're a much bigger market.

    • +3

I bought a similar one earlier in the year for my kids room and built a frame for it so its built in to the top half of the window and bottom half is still a window that just doesn't open.

Portable aircons take up floor space and in my experience do an inferior job. This is out the way ready to go when needed

$252 for the aircon from Kogan delivered on special. Installed it myself saving $500+ on a split system install and it does a pretty good job in their small room. Honestly never understood how these became so out of fashion for portable aircons. Split system is much better but in a completely different price range and requires a licensed installer.

      • +1

Nice! $252 delivered was a very good price.
Probably not going to get any specials like that at this time of year :(

        • I ordered mine on December 29th 2019. It arrived i think first business day of 2020. Cant remember exactly what the sale was. Probably boxing day specials based on when I ordered it.

But yeah considering it was summer it was a great deal on it.. works very well in my kids room which is about 3.6m x 4m or so from memory.

I dunno why I thought I ordered it end of January. Pretty sure there was sales on before then. But shipping killed it. I think i jumped on the deal when there was free shipping.

    • We bought one as a temporary AC while waiting for renovations to commence. Wouldn't have survived the summer without. Much quieter than the portable AC we were gifted before hand.

Surprised no one has linked to this -

hi SOA - how well do these perform compared with portable air-cons. Assume they are more efficient, but sufficiently improved to be worth the hassle of installation, inability to move around the house etc?

    • +4

These are decent, portable ACs terrible efficiency

    • Hey Idyllboy!
These box aircons generally perform better than portable a/c's (per kilowatt), so to answer your question, yes, they're more efficient. This model in particular would probably be cheaper than most of your portables. The downside compared to a portable a/c is that these are a bit louder.

      • +4

People should also keep in mind that the portable AC will have the compressor loop within the room, while the window AC will still have the compressor outside. Louder than a splitty but can be quieter than a portable! Also way more efficient.

They love them in the US still! Wild seeing skyscrapers with window rattlers all the way up.

I'm actually a little bit tempted to grab one - we've got ducted aircon which is hideously inefficient overnight - wouldn't be terrible to slot one of these bad boys in for bedroom cooling.

I've been temped to put a split in our bedroom but there isn't any suitable wall space.

  • +4

Agree with the OP and TEER3X… speaking from experience, these 'window rattlers' are actually far better than the portables for the same money. I was actually quite shocked at how bad the very powerful $400 portable AC was but I bought it as a quick temp solution. It did an 'OK' job but these are miles ahead… not as good as a split which is even further ahead again but very decent nonetheless and could be DIY installed/removed in a rental situation.

I've always wondered why no-one's invented a hybrid version of all three though… basically a split system with a semi-weatherproof outdoor unit that can sit on a simple concrete paver or balcony or possibly even hang from a window sill and a neat & tidy indoor unit that can either sit on a table or also hang from the window sill maybe even via the same device as the outdoor unit then a pair of permanently connected, flexible gas hoses between them that can pass through a slightly opened door or window. You could then just plug the indoor unit into a standard GPO and off you go! Hmm, maybe I should invent that.

EDIT: Looks like I'm too late, I just found this but I think they're only available overseas.

I bought portable split DeLonghi from Clive Peters ~14 year ago. You can see these devices popping up on eBay from time to time.

      • How was the DeLonghi?

        • +1

It was great. It was reverse cycle - cooling/heating.
Indoor unit was similar to what we can see in split systems - it has to be fixed on the wall. It had draining hose which has to follow the main "cable" to go somewhere outside. The "cable" was a two flexible pipes with "quick connect" valve so you can detach outdoor unit from indoor unit without losing the gas.

          It was something like this
          https://static1.shop033.com/resources/F6/2806/resized/F4/168…

Once installed it looked like traditional split system but with a thick ugly hose on a side which has to go into a balcony.

It wasn't that portable in terms of portability. But it was identical in operations and convenience to the normal traditional split systems once installed.
If I own the property I would install a proper fixed one.

          • @SickDmith: Yeah nice!! That's exactly what I was thinking of. I wonder why they're not popular… I mean with installation costs now $500-$600 there'd be people willing to spend $1000-$1200 on an absolute DIY solution instead of a permanent split system surely?!

I'm hoping Midea Au would bring this model into Au, a good designed product i reckon. Would be even quiter than the standard box window air con, and you can still use the window as normal-ish.

    How did Joyce Mayne die?

    Kelvinator.

  • WOW looks like its from the 1970s

  • I need one at max 440 wide :(

    • +1

Unfortunately, this is the smallest unit we have at 450 wide. Sorry mate! :(

  • oops

  • Pity no delivery outside Brisbane, need a couple.

    • Yeah unfortunately, due to the size of these and the location of our warehouse, it works out being far too expensive for us to get these delivered further outside Brisbane / Gold Coast. Sorry about that mate!

  • +1

What would you recommend for a 45sqm living room (bottom floor)?

    • It's gonna depend on a few things:
      - is the room insulated?
      - does it get a lot of hot afternoon sun?

Generally, if the room is protected from the sun, and is insulated, we'd suggest a 6.0kw unit, but they're a bit harder to find. So typically, we'd suggest a 7.0kw.

      I'd recommend this split system A/C - Kelvinator KSD71HWH - $1399 with 7.1kw cooling, 8.0kw heating.
