Best TV for Next Gen Consoles? (Budget $2,000)

Hi All!

In the market for a new TV to compliment the next gen series consoles. I've never made the switch over to 4K so I think it's due time now! What's the best thing I can get now under 2k? Ultimately looking for at least min specs of 4K HDR with a good refresh rate - 120 if possible?

Will be keeping an eye out during Black Friday sales to snag a deal but want to know what to be looking for. Cheers!

Looks like microsoft is recommending 120hz 4k HDR as the new standard. I'd also add zoned/led array backlighting too as a minimum, unless it's an especially good looking edge lit display. And count the number of HDMI ports that will support the required specs. If you have an XBox Series X, a PS5, and an Apple TV 4K all connected, but only two ports that will do 4k@60hz, let alone 120hz, then you may want to pay more for a TV that has more of the ports you'll need. Rather than bothering with buying a compatible switcher/receiver.

    Sony 55" X9000H.

    • +1

      ~$1500 for the 55.
      ~$2000 for the 65.

      Local dimming
      4k
      HDR
      HDMI 2.1
      4k/120hz

Will get VRR and ALLM in the future.

      • This seems to be the top contender here! Where have you found that it will get VRR / ALLM? In the US this model is called the X900H and in the spec sheets it shows that VRR / ALLM is supported. Unfortunately not the same for our X9000H model!

Also I've heard that the firmware to support the 4k 120hz wasn't available, lots of people complaining. Is this available now?

          HDTVTest
He talks about the update that came last month with 4k/120hz support but at 7:35 he mentions that VRR/ALLM will come in another update.

@The Value: Ah yes, but see this is the US / UK variant the X900H and not the Aussie Variant X9000H. Thinking we may be left out of the VRR / ALLM. I'll try contact Sony sometime and see if it indeed is coming to our specific models. Fingers crossed we get this!

      • Any links or what not for these prices? I haven't seen them this low. Thanks!

      • What’s VRR and ALLM. What does it do to make things better for games (or TV/Movies/Netflix)?
I’ve never heard the term before.

quickest answer is get whatever size LG OLED you can fit under that $2000

    • This is what I came here to write.

    • Wait, why LG in particular?

Girlfriends son has a 2 yo Samsung 55in with an original Xbox One.
He wants a new Xbox, but given his 2 speeding fines, I doubt she will look at $500-$750, as i said you really need a new 4K TV to make full use of it. I'm suggesting a GPS with Speedzones, warnings etc would be better.

      U good bro?

I'm beyond confused but thanks I guess?

    LG CX 55

EDIT: maybe BX or CX 48 with that budget

    • There aren't any 2020 LG OLEDs for under $2000.

      • +1

Oh wow, how much is the cheapest 2020 LG OLED?

        • $3000 for the 55inch BX

          • @PVA: BX 55" is going for $2490 on Videopro currently.

I just got the 48" CX (as a monitor).

            wow. No other words.

    • Cheers for this, I may consider splurging a little extra for the CX / BX . Considering the Samsung Q95T as well at this stage. So hard to pick!

      • Samsung only has one hdmi 2.1 port, Sony will have 2, LG will have 4 ports.

Check out this article. There are only 3 TV's with hdmi 2.1 that support next gen.

  • Merged from Looking for a TV for The Next Generation of Gaming

So eventually I will get, probably, a PS5 but possibly a Xbox Series X.

However I feel like my $399 OzBargain JVL 65'' TV purchase a few years ago might not be the best TV to get the most out of the gaming systems features.

So looking for suggestions on what people are using for there next generation consoles or what they recommend.

I know very little about TV's but ideally I want at least 3 HDMI inputs and I'd want something bigger than 65inch and ideally not some crazy expensive TV - i.e. I've seen TV's going for >$7,000 online.

    Thanks in advance.

LG CX series is the top tier right now.

Wait until Black Friday sales, the 27th I believe.

All these TVs support HDMI 2.1 features, most importantly(to me) 120hz:

      • The LG CX/BX/C9/GX.

      • LG Nano86 (IPS panel, medicore blacks & poor FALD)

      • LG Nano91 (IPS, includes FALD)

      • Samsung Q70t(VA panel, no FALD but VA has solid blacks)

      • Samsung Q80t or higher(VA, includes FALD)

      • Sony X9000h (VA, includes FALD, reportedly blurry at 120hz)

FALD is Full Array Local Dimming. Separates the backlights into zones so you can achieve deeper blacks. I dont think it usually works well in game mode.

IPS & VA are types of LCD panels. IPS has wider viewing angles, VA has significantly better blacks but there are IPS panels with good blacks & VA's with good viewing angles.

Other features to keep an eye out for are:

      • VRR, this allows the TV to adjust the hz to match the in-game FPS. This prevents screen tearing(where 2 frames combine, most noticeable when rotating cameras).

      • HDR, there are a few types, HDR10, HDR10+ & Dolby Vision. Support varies from TV, to console to service.

      • Auto low latency mode, reduces TV's input lag.

So things can change, updates can add certain features(though it's not guaranteed to work well). Right now the XSX has more support for these advanced TV features.

    • You need to specify your budget. There's a huge amount of room between $399 and $7000.

Anything from this list is a solid pick. Obviously the LG CX is pick of the litter, but covid demand has distorted pricing. 12 months ago, you could get a C9 55" for <$1800, now you'd be lucky to get its barely-upgraded successor for $2500.

      • I was just hoping for opinions i was hoping under 3k but it might not be the best time to buy a tv might see how black friday goes

        • +1

Opinions vary. A deal for a $600 TV gets posted and people say it's a good deal, good picture for the price. A $4000 TV gets posted and people say the same thing.

I say rule out any TV that is edge lit or doesn't specificy that it has zoned backlighting/lighting array/mini led/OLED. If it doesn't say what kind of lighting it has, then it is edge lit and will probably not look great. Apple has been making great looking edge lit displays for years so it's not a hard and fast rule. But edge lit looks very washed out and 90s on budget TVs to be sure and I'd never buy one again. You want your blacks to be deep black, even if there is a blinding bright light source on the other side of the screen. The smaller the LED array, the better the local lighting effect will be, the more the HDR will look like a window into a real world.

Also I think Microsoft is pushing 4K@120hz pretty hard, so you'll probably want that feature too.

          • +2

@AustriaBargain: "Also I think Microsoft is pushing 4K@120hz pretty hard, so you'll probably want that feature too."

4K at 120Hz is a pipe dream and will not happen on either console for any new games with fancy 3D graphics. Still, even if they put out some less intensive games at 4k/120fps and patched some older games to do it that would be pretty great.

        • Best time would be after you have whatever console you end up getting? By then there may be some stability in prices, guess we have to remember with the release of new consoles etc accessories like NVME ssds, TVs and ultra monitors are going to jump in price to cash in on the must have at all costs first users.

Get the console suffer the existing TV till things settle mid 2021?

  • Honestly none of them are ideal ATM. There's only a handful of TV's that support HDMI 2.1 which is what you'll need to get 4k 120hz, but they ALL have issues with actually running 4k 120hz. If you can hold off for next year's models when they iron out HDMI 2.1 then it'd be better.

If you have to buy now I've heard the least amount of bad things about the Samsung (except they only have one HDMI 2.1 port but that's probably ok). That's the Q70t Q80t or Q95t. The Q70t doesn't have full array local dimming so the HDR on it sucks. The other two are expensive

    • Don't know if I'm patient enough / ready to fork out enough money for the newest flagship when it comes out next year. IMO it will be super difficult for consoles to hit that 4k 120 sweet spot anyway. I've got a pretty beefy computer and I struggle to hit a solid 4k 90+ .

I've heard the Samsung does the worst with the VRR gamma problem, but haven't heard anything about flickering. Also their 'game mode' was known to have some issues. Yet to look into it.

      • 4k 120 is already in a few games, Gears 5 has it, Ori and the will of the wisps, star wars squadrons, Monster boy, the master chief collection, black Ops cold war. I'm sure I'm missing some.

You'd be surprised, for easier to run games 4k 120 is achievable. PCs struggle because people always set everything to ultra rather than optimised settings, and because console games often use reconstruction techniques and dynamic resolutions.

There's the LG nano 91 too. I haven't heard of anything bad about it so far, but maybe that's because no one buys it lol.
