    • It never occurred to me to think of the 5G spectrum as the thing that was moving!

need 4g unlimited for $40pm (no 12Mbps cap)

  • +1

You can try your luck and do the month for month plan where it has a $200 start up fee. Just talk to a Optus customer rep and say you will sign up if they remove the start up fee and they might do it. You can usually negotiate with them.

    • I used to have a $60/200GB mobile data package, after 12M contract (same price month to month after that) I tired to negotiate with them for a price reduction, they tired to sign me up for a $65/200GB package. Iol

  • $ sign not working op?

      Sorry for that - updated.

      • Thanks!

The average speed is quiet good, but 5G is not available in my area :(

  • “ Minimum 50mbps guaranteed, no capping of speed - typical evening speeds of 239mbps”
Damn my parents are getting a max of 30 on nbn, those nbn asshats better get their crap together

    • +3

You mean the government we elected? I believe NBN only has to hit 25Mbps and that's all that is guaranteed by NBN.

      • +4

Oh don’t worry I’m fully aware of the parties to blame. I haven’t voted liberal since they stuffed it up

        • You mean to tell me that is a sole reason you stopped voting for them?

          • @bargainparker: Yup pretty much. Its the main reason. It’s not like either party will change my life much and I use the internet everyday

            • @bowtiehoon: Well, now you are stuck with either government and poor internet.

              • @bargainparker: So if I voted liberal how would that help anything? Both sides aren’t as different as you think.
At least this way I can feel slightly better by saying stuff ya for being douche bags. It’s petty sure, but whatevas.
Just like when labor party Conroy wanted to sensor the internet, I numbered each person on the ballot with him last. Made no difference cause the libs ended up doing it anyways.

I still can’t understand how the former chairman of ozemail made such a mess of the country’s internet… it was his bread and butter

                • @bowtiehoon: Didn't say it would help, just that you are stuck 😉 I wouldn't even vote if they didn't make it a law that you have to or pay a penalty. Such a stupid law. Who are you going to vote for when the choice is only two parties. The point of voting is to make a change for the better, this is only juggling.

On another note, I see people being narrow minded, since neither of them is good. Unfortunately for any changes to happen, humans are not the species who will do it, apart from the French.

Why should the chairman care, his internet is good.
It's like seeing how the government is slowly stuffing up Australia, yet they are not doing it only to their citizens, but also their family, since they are also living here, and they can't hope their descendants will keep working in high places. Human logic is bizarre.

    • I live in the country and get 20/1 on Optus 4G and around 60/5 on Telstra 4G. NBN asshats apparently will be here mid-late next year.

  • +7

No deal! Amazingly Spintel is reselling the same product/modem for a cheaper price.

    https://www.spintel.net.au/home/5G

A 24-month Spintel contract is $60 for the first 6 months then $70 for the remaining 18 months with a $20 setup fee. This averages out to around $68 per month.

    • Hey bro, no Optus sports though. That alone is worth $15/mth

      • Anyone who's paying $15 per month for Optus sport is being ripped off. I've got 3 Optus sport accounts all of which are never used. Just check out the OzB classifieds and people are offering up spots for much less all the time.

Likewise with the fetch you don't actually own the box and the channel pack is worth $6 at best.

        • +1

Well Optus pays big $$$ to the sports provider to bring soccer matches to Australia. It is only right that we, as consumer, do Optus right and not trying to rip her off by illegally buying spots

    • Speed capped, though, I believe, to around 100.

      • Not speed capped, its average speed is 214mbps and there is no mention on any spintel page of a speed cap. Perhaps you're thinking of the new Optus plan which is $75 per month and caped to 100mbps.

  • +3

This used to be $75 without the fetch.
    If anyone need a review:
    - Speed is pretty decent. Depending on your area and distance but you can expect 200+ mbps mode the time
    - Wifi on the included Nokia modem is ok but has less coverage and strength compared to the Telstra NBN modem
    - streaming is great even though there’s some dropouts
    - Gaming on this is possible but ping is stupidly high console to NBN. I.E for LOL would be 14ms vs 80ms on average. Also Ping would randomly jump to 200ms 300ms and sometimes up to 3000ms for 2 3 minutes at a time. Happen at least twice every game for the last 2 weeks since I got out.
Overall if you can get NBN HFC or FTTP with 100mbps+ with similar price then I would recommend you go with NBN

    • +3

Was originally $70 per month for unlimited so they've basically put the price up by $20 per month and bundle fetch and Optus sport with it in the process.

I had it for a month and a half but the stability was a big problem. The price and the speed is very good but until they sort out problems with the actual product I can't see it destroying the NBN (at least not yet).

      • +1

It was $70, with no Optus sport. Almost bought but didn't.

It went to $75, with Optus sport. I then found an article saying it was going to increase to $90# month so I bought it then, even though I don't really watch Optus sport.

Glad I got in before the price hike.

    • +1

Interestingly the 4G is a lot more stable for me at home. If I use my phon3 to hotspot and turn off 5G, it's almost as fast (150-200 mbps) with lower ping and more stable (ping spikes aee almost non existent)

  • Anyone know when Telstras new 5G Homebroad band plans go active ? I have Telstra 5G here but no Optus 5G. I read a few months ago they were going to try to start rolling them out in November but I haven't heard anything yet. I only have shitly LNBN for fixed services and there's a $300 connection fee I refuse to buy into.

    • You can try putting your address in here:
      https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/5g-broadband-plans#plan

but it probably won't work as Telstra 5G is oddly specific with the requirements right now:

      • You must have been a Telstra NBN customer with either FTTB or FTTN for at least 9 months.
      • You must be getting over 50mbps on the line at least 80% of the time.
      • You must be using less than 350GB per month data.

Provide you meet all those requirements then the single plan is $85 per month for 500GB data.

Basically, Telstra is only allowing long term, low usage customers who are close to the node onto their 5G fixed wireless product and I can't see that changing for a while now.

      • With those terms it's looks like it's just a Proof of Concept. They would be blocking a lot of potential customers.

On the other hand, they probably don't want too many people rushing to 5G as their NBN replacement, as I believe they're still getting paid a pretty penny for leasing infrastructure and handing off connections to the NBN; once they start losing that revenue, then they'll probably start allowing customer's onto their 5G network; once they've raked in billions, Infra Co (Telstra) will probably swoop in, purchase the NBN for peanuts and hey, we're all back to "before" square one, as Telstra will again be the monopoly and they would have been handed billions of taxpayer's dollars.

I had Optus broadband 4G and it was a bit unstable, probably an issue with the 4G modem. I'm not in a 5G area but my work is. Just signed up using my work address and all good. The good thing about the 5G Nokia modem is that it connects to 4G plus also and speeds are up to 100MB/40MB when I have checked whereas on the 4G plan with a Cat9 modem I was only getting up to 30MB/10MB.

Note that the address you sign up with is the address that they have to post the modem to.

I'm on $70 P/m. They accidentally put me on month to month instead of 24m so waived the $200 startup fee and gave me a free month. Really happy with everything. Wifi range with the Nokia is pretty good and you can add Nokia Beacons for a mesh network. Functionality of the Nokia is fairly limited so I just use Deco M9's to serve up the wifi.

    • I'm using Optus 4G, great initially but unstable since August. Improved a bit recently but still not as good.
It's likely to be optus5 as our Optus mobile seems the same. Out Telstra, Voda Sims are our backup hotspots.

    • ”The good thing about the 5G Nokia modem is that it connects to 4G plus also and speeds are up to 100MB/40MB when I have checked whereas on the 4G plan with a Cat9 modem I was only getting up to 30MB/10MB.”

Good to know. So besides 5g network, where available, Nokia modem can replace Huawei B818 CAT19 modem for 4G+/LTE.

Probably not worth getting this in Melbourne at the moment, with no Covid cases for nearly two weeks, 5G has obviously been switched off for the time being.

    • 5G transmitted CoVid19? Are you sure?

      • +3

It did. The virus was uploaded by Bill Gates.

    • Lol someone downvoted you

  • The real bargain is if your area is eligible since most areas are not.

Damn I live at Blacktown and the area doesn't even have 4G Broadband only the slow NBN.

    • You must be really unlucky, as most of Blacktown (suburb - not council) is serviced by FTTP. The best possible type of NBN available. Just need to sell and arm and a leg to afford 1Gps plans per month. The council is a mix, but it's overwhelmingly FTTP/FTTC/HFC in the residential areas. Strangely most of the industrial area only got FTTN, if anyone or entity would have a need (right now) and the money for the 1Gbps it would definitely be businesses. Big oversight by the NBN with the MTM mess.

On the other hand, it really depends what you need the Internet for, as there are pros and cons to both fixed line and wireless services.

  • Can this things use like portable internet hotspot?

    • Terms and conditions for Optus Home 5g say it can only be used at the address you sign up for.

Technically they can monitor this by looking at which tower you're connected to. (I am not suggesting they would, or that they do, just that it is possible)

The 5g modem/wifi router is the size of a 2 litre milk bottle so not easily portable anyway.

      • And heavier. It's a beast of thing. But I get shockingly good speeds from it with only 2 bars of 5G.

  • +1

I bought this deal 2 months back at $75 per month, several important things to note:
5G is an improving technology so works on the infrastructure are common. I'm working from home and my speed was hobbled for a week straight as they worked on the tower. I badgered them for a refund on this week but it didn't make the speed any better to deal with when the work was occuring.
Speeds are actually very good. I'm 800m from the tower but raised compared to my neighbours and I have direct line of sight through a window so I can get 300mpbs down and 40 up. This is tempermental and greatly depends on you distance and line of sight.
The modem itself has been know to have issues by many people on the optus forums and whirlpool. It is also heavily locked down and was not compatible with static IPs nor with my old wireless extender. Compared to the previous Sagemcom router I used on Optus cable the wireless network strength is worse so you will need a compatible mesh system or I ran a powerline adaptor to the old optus router and used this in a semi bridge mode at the other end of my house, gives 30mbps which is fine. Upgrade to a TP link Deco system when cheap.
Pings are high. 30 with ethernet, higher over wireless, not great if you are a die hard gamer.
Very impressed with the shipping and connection time. I got on to 5g as I was never advised of the cable cut off and the optus rep said this would be a much faster set up than waiting for NBN to be installed. Modem came in 2 days and was connected in 30 mins.
Have not contracted cancer, autism or corona

    • If you had issues with 5G didn't it automatically revert to 4G?

Or could you not disable 5G and keep it connected via 4G only?

I have a friend that uses the Nokia Oputs 5G plan purely in a 4G only area and he seems to be happy

      • +1

Yes it reverts to 4g, that's what I referred to as hobbled speed.
I'm surprised your friend was able to purchase the plan, Optus check to make sure that you can actually get 5g reception before you are allowed to sign up for it.

        • I guess he may have used a dummy 5G coverage address and then the correct shipping address

  • How is the 5g on gaming ? pings and etc,
    Is it playble? Any complaints?

    • my speedtest ping is 29ms. Don't know if that helps.

      • Actual gaming pings and etc, if its actually playable.

  • Just switched to Optus 5G ($75 PLAN) from TPG NBN50. Cost is just over for the 1st - 2 years, and its worth it. Haven't been under 95 so far.

I am 725m from the nearest tower.

  • I signed up with the old plan $70 unlimited, 3 towers around with nearest one is around 150m.

But nope cant get any 5G signal, only 4G so far.

Also, I do not think it is recommended to use it for gaming at least for now.

    Gotta cancel my plan…
