Ergonomics Monitor Setup, Two 27" Screens or One 34" Screen

Hi All,

My current setup is a 13.3" laptop and a 27" screen.
I looking to ditch the laptop for a desktop.
The current setup works well for me, the laptop screen is small enough that im not turning my head excessively and I can use multiple windows easily.

My main use is productivity for Zoom, documents, light coding and even lighter gaming.

I feel like 2x27" would be too large and I would end up using only half of the secondary screen.

As i'm in multiple windows most of the day I heard that dual monitor are better for this than a 34" screen.

What are you thoughts? 2x27" screen with one vertical ?
1x34" screen?
a 27" screen + a 24" ?

Thanks !

  • At work I run 2x27's - I find it works well for me.
Admin on one and other shit on the other.. someone calls with an issue, I can minimize on one screen and work there easily.

I've thought of the 2 screens v 1 for space saving, but I even now have 2x27's at home - they do take up a shit loads of space.

  • A 35" ultrawide would be my pick, the tradeoff is it'll cost as much as 2 x 27" screens so there's that…

  • I have a 32' flat and its difficult to view all the details. Ultrawide in 32' OR bigger. else 27 x2

  • 34 ultra wide in the middle and 2x 27, one on each side

  • I previously had 3x 27 but swapped the middle with a 34'. So 1x 34 and 2x 27.

What's not clear about our setup is how far away you're sitting from the monitors. If you're sitting as close as you need to be to see a 13' laptop, then 34 is way too big, even 27 might be too big.

When I made the monitor change above, I pushed all the monitors back (as my desk is quite wide) which made things a whole lot more comfortable. For work purposes too, from my experience, there's more productivity to be gained with two individual monitors as opposed to one large one. I can snap windows to the monitor and drag as necessary, where a large monitor (although can snap to an area), does require more mouse movement and time to snap a window to the specific area it needs to go to do the snap.

(assuming snap is the right word for maximise to the screen or half screen)

  • I have 2 FHD 27s at home for WFH and some gaming, and honestly think they are too big (not a huge desk so I am quite close). I have 2 FHD 22s at work and reckon that or 24s would be fine for a mainly productivity setup.

    • yeah ive used 2x24" often at work and find it a lot easier to work with
My desk is a 140mm width i sit arms length from the monitor.

It seems this thread is more about personal preference

      • It is personal preference and depends on your setup - it was always a topic with an outcome that only you could decide on to suit your preference.

  • Depends on resolution, many find FHD is really only acceptable at <27" as windows just get too tight/cramped- and the pixels too large.

If u get >30" in >2.5k/QHD is a lot more space, but too much is never enough. A wide one is better than a tall one, espeically if you are short sighted and wear multifocals. 27" can work in a pair yes, but two 31" screens is paradise and cheap. However they will spread clean across an entire desk, may not be enough space.

Bottom line, if you have a 27, get another. If not, one >30" will probably be enough, so try that first, but measure your desk in case you decide you want another. You can also get 43" but they get very tall and can cause neck and back pain for some.
