Saw this at local Harvey Norman (Auburn)
Thought its a good deal for those who want to upgrade their non 3D AV Receiver to a 3D one.
Heres a link for specs and images….

To be fair…
Sony's Australian RRP is $499
The US model usually is 110V only.
Sony is the ones ripping us off!
$500 is what I paid for my Sony 5.1 receiver 10 years ago. You'd think they'd have gotten cheaper in that time.
They have… The $500 you spent 10 years ago is worth closer to $1000 today.
Shipping?
I dont even have a receiver should I get one?? I have an old sony 'hometheatre in a box' type of thing with a 5.1 surround sound but it doesnt provide the HD sound of bluray etc and it is not a true receiver. I have just made do with onboard tv sound
Being a bit of an audiophile, I often wondered why they had to make them all so big and chunky. Couldn't they make smaller ones for people like me who enjoy hi-fi sounds but are underwhelmed by the loud clashes and bangs of special effects?
Yeah and whilst they are at it make Ferraris that run on air and make no V12 noises. I hate those loud noises, burning rubber and the smell of leather….how annoying :)
Amusing it may be, I hardly think your analogy is relevant. It seems to me that many music listeners fall into one of two camps when it comes to assessing the quality of their equipment: one side tends to favour stronger bass and the other likes sharper treble. I find that either of these imblances would tire my ears out in a short time, to the point when listening ceased to be a pleasure.
Being an audiophile, we would have thought you would be buying a 2 channel Hifi amp to enjoy your hifi sounds, like something from Cambridge audio, instead of a cheap ass AV receiver.
Or for real Audiophile goodness Tubular Amps ;)
@bigheadache
I'm considering this little beauty:
www.audiolab.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?lang=En&Tab2=8200AP
but I'm reluctant to integrate my movie watching and music listening space 'cause I wouldn't like to be looking at a big screen when listening to music.
The reason they are so big an chunky is because…
a) there is a huge transformer inside and a massive set of heatsinks (in this one there are 7 channels of amplification). There is not much ventilation in AV cabinets, so they have to make the heatsinks big with lots of air around them.
b) the rear panel has to accommodate all the inputs and outputs (although this is a low-spec unit so the back panel is not really all that full)
So, to get decent, reliable grunt and have the IO that makes the Receiver practical, the unit must be big and chunky.
Seems to be a good price and the reviews state that it is a solid entry-level system. There is some speculation about possible limitations on availability of high end decoding of audio codecs for certain countries.
HDMI pass-through… I don't quite get that. From what I've read, it's actually a bad thing. It just passes the audio on the HDMI connection through to TV, without decoding and playing it out from speakers. Or have I totally misunderstood this concept or is the information old and obsolete nowadays?
As an option it provides flexibility I guess, but the unit does have speaker output itself, so you don't have to listen to your TV speakers if you don't want to.
$299 for a 7.1 ain't bad, paid $333 for my pioneer VSX-520 earlier this year and it's 5.1.
Personally I would rank Sony receivers at the bottom of the list. Most disappointing attribute of any Sony receiver is their ability to drive good speakers confidently. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I've had Mid Range sony receivers in the past and then upgraded within a year to a similarly priced Onkyo. They sound MILES APART!! My oppinion, stay away from Sony Receivers and Speakers. For the price, you should look elsewhere.
I think the only thing going for this system at this price point is the 7.1 and the ARC. In all other respects it is very average for specs.
it is $176.99 now in Amazon, and price smashed to $299 in Harvey Norman, well done, Harvey!
