$1000ish Laptop Recommedations

Hey OzB

Got a crush on the Dell XPS, my budget is not.

Looking for something around $1000:
- 15" screen
- i5 processor min
- GTX 1050 min
- XPS build and case quality

Want something that doesn't leave me lusting over an XPS

So, sadly for 1k you're going to have to sacrifice something.

Sometimes that means getting a 13' inch, sometimes that means 8gb RAM instead of 16, sometimes that means a processor that isn't as good as you would want or a screen that is kinda poor.

In terms of performance, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/579546 This Lenovo is pretty good. GTX 1650ti will probably be 30-40% better than a GTX 1050. It does have AMD, but it is similar to i5 10th gen in terms of overall performance. Not 100% sure about build quality, but I'd imagine it is probably pretty solid.

The downside is the screen at 250nits. Can't comment on the battery life since gaming laptops are known to have poor battery life.

I'm currently looking at Huawei Matebook d 15.

For around $1.2k AUD, it will have 16gb ram, 512gb SSD, it has Ryzen 7 4700 which would outperform the i5 easily and Vega 8 can provide similar performance to a GTX 1050. It has the thin bezels like a XPS as well

The downsides is that the build quality is not as good as XPS, it uses a lot more plastic, but I haven't seen people complain about it. Also, don't think you can buy it from a local retailer in Australia unless you're willing to get a ryzen 5 instead and 8gb ram (they are soldered), so that is a downside as well. Screen is also 250nits

You can always wait until Black Friday and hopefully XPS go on sale and maybe if you up your budget a bit you can get it.

    • Yeah ended up getting that Lenovo.

Found out you need to blow minimum $2k to get a laptop that is 'quality'
