How High Are You Supposed to Sit When Driving a Car?

Just wondering how high you're supposed to sit when driving a car. What I generally hear is to sit as low as possible, but how low?

In my seating position, I can see over the dashboard but I can only see the wiper blades and the two black cubes that spray out the water for the windscreen and that's about it.

Are you supposed to be seated at a height such that you can see the entirety of the bonnet, or a large part of the car's bonnet?

For me it's the highest the car seat setting would let me. It's great if you can see the bonnet but in general people don't see this.
You need to gauge the distance between your car and the one in front by heart through experience.

    • ah ok, I thought you needed to be able to see the bonnet

    "sit as low as possible"
so that when you turn your head 90 degrees you are looking out back door window

      Fully hektik or something…

you should be able to see the road couple of meters infront of your car…

if you cant see the front of the car how can you judge to park - or move past poles/cars etc when they are parked

    • yeah I can see the road in front of the car, I just can't see the actual bonnet, only the two black cubes that stick out to spray water on the windscreen.

      • How far away is the road if you can’t see the bonnet. If you can only see the two black cubes how the hell are you going to see a 3-4 year old child running directly in front of your car.

I've not heard this one before, seeing as bonnet lengths and angles differ between cars, how does this work?

    • nah just wondering whether you're supposed to make the seat higher so you can see the bonnet, or are you supposed to sit lower?

I have no idea, but my guess is it would be more safe for the driver the lower they sit in the event of an accident, maybe that's why?

I personally prefer to sit as high as possible so I have a better viewing angle of the road and surrounds, nothing to do with seeing the bonnet.

        • same. I was always jealous of the suvs looking down at me, now I have one and I still set the seat as high as possible.

My rear view mirror is at it's max angle and is barely in position.
When I saw this post I had an aha moment - maybe I should be setting the seat lower!!??

  • Get this

    • thats assuming his short….plus he would need one of those tall shoes to reach the pedals then ….

  • What I generally hear is to sit as low as possible, but how low

Exactly where are you heading this?

      • Not sure on the logic
Sports car, sure..low kind of makes sense to feel more in the car (and they generally are lower seating positions anyway)

Regular old daily driver, as long as there is some space above your head I don't see how a lower position is better
Whatever gives you the best visibilty and driving comfort based on your height/dimensions

      • That's an Audi, does it apply to normal cars?

  • Safety first, sit upright and high. It is a motor vehicle, not a lounge chair.

To protect your knees the seat should be close enough to the peddles that you can't completely straighten your leg.

Generally most teenagers go as low as possible and most adults go as high as possible with out touching the roof. If you go low you still need to be able to see the road. If you go high you want around 5cm from the roof in case of a roll over.

You want a 90 degree bend with your hands around the middle of the steering wheel hoop. This is to 'make it impossible' to lock, then blow out, your elbow in a front or rear crash. So adjust the back angle of the chair to protect your elbows and provide comfort. If you are sitting too upright for comfort and you are out of steering wheel telescope, move the seat forward so you have room to increase the back's angle.

The benefits of sitting higher is it is generally more comfortable to enter and exit a car with higher seats and better vision. The advantage of sitting lower is slightly more privacy, a slightly better center of mass and slightly better weight distribution. Which is more comfortable depends on the person and the car.

u/Spackbace would do this five times a day and should have better advice.

    • 90 degree bend? do you mean elbows? so that would be chest about 10 inches from steering wheel, and I'm guessing legs bent up under them??

I've noticed that some like to recline seat so they can barely reach steering wheel, but surely 90 degrees is way too close??

      • Yes, elbows. I rewrote most of that to make it flow better but I didn't rewrite that paragraph.

The idea is so you can never fully extend your arm.

This was from a manufacturer, so their focus was minimising injuries hence liability, not comfort.

I can't believe you're asking this. Obviously, the more fully sik your car is, the lower you have to sit! lol

    • its a kia cerato hahaha

The seating position that makes you feel like a safe driver and delivers good visibility is the best option.

This position will be different for every driver.

    Your question is unanswerable.

    • If only there was a way to diagrammatically indicate a good driver position. Like some sort of painting program for computers.

  • As close to the steering wheel as possible, and as upright as possible. If you feel and look like a turtle, that’ll be close enough. Old Ladies have it right.

  • I drive pretty long distances.

I've always found myself to be less fatigued the higher I am.

Couple of joints before really makes the time fly?

  • Are you supposed to be seated at a height such that you can see the entirety of the bonnet,

    LOL.

You'll hit something if you drive around looking at the "bonnet".

    • This.

I don't get why the big focus on seeing your bonnet.

Plus you're supposed to know the dimensions of your vehicle. You shouldn't need to see how much space you've got to the vehicle in front: you should know how far you are from it as you drive closer.

Perhaps you need another camera for that….

  • Before getting your licence, ask the instructor for the best position.
Before going for your driver's test, ensure you are seated correctly.

So before contemplating driving a dangerous vehicle, ask the instructor.
