Coles Prices Are Different between Stores (on Clearance Item)

Has anyone had the experience that a product on the shelf at Coles is different to another Coles store, one suburb away?

I bought a Clearance pack of Muesli Bars (from a shelf with the printed title "Clearance" in Coles font at the top) for $0.90 cents at Coles Umina, and Coles Kincumber, the exact same pack with exact same Barcode and Expiry Date was $2, only two hours later when I visited there.

Exact same stock, different store, different price!

There was no Sticker covering the barcode with any other barcode; it wasn't a Manual Clearance done by staff.
The actual printed barcode on the box was used in both instances.

Are Deleted and/or Clearance stock prices set by the specific Store Manager at every Coles site?

Anyone know the backend process for Clearance/Deleted Stock?

Clearance products will always be marked down based on how much stock is left in each store.

The point is to move the stock out ASAP. If a store has more, they’ll be available at a lower price.

So, it's set by the site-specific Store Manager in his backend system at the store level, right???

It's not set by Head Office at Tooronga, Victoria???

There’s probably an advised price to start at, but yes, it would ultimately be determined by the specific store.

      • It could also be a case where it's a deleted line at one store, but the second store you visited still ranges the product - hence the product may be discounted heavily at the first store you visited to clear the last of their stock. As it isn't a markdown due to something being close to expiry the manager would mark it down through the backend system rather than manually sticker each unit to clear.

I think it's pretty common that food is cheaper in poorer areas. Or maybe the other way around. But yes to being different

You should check the commercial land cost in each area, I would suspect regional area stores would be the cheapest for Coles to build a store, not sure about the turnover. XD

Sadly, my experience (admittedly several years ago) is "the other way around". Certainly true of the Sydney suburbs…I have no idea about other capital cities. I always thought it was rather sinister that the major supermarkets were eager to add a few cents (sometimes more) to popular products in areas where the customers were either less-informed or unable to drive a few suburbs away for some comparison shopping. The best bargains were always in the affluent suburbs.

Also I think people in these suburbs expect higher quality so that anything not meeting the local standards is marked down sooner/higher to sell.

Stores can individually clear products. If one store has 40 units of yogurt that expires tomorrow and 10 fresh units just arrived, they do have the ability to put out the 40, mark them down on the whole store system, then when they sell out they put the price back up and put the 10 fresh ones out. Or you see sometimes they will put the fresh ones at the back of the shelf and put mark down stickers on the old ones at the front. I'd say the former method is a bit more elegant if they have a lot of stock to clear.

Coles markdowns can vary substaintially. My store is amazing, not uncommon to find things marked down between 75-90% including premium cheeses such as Fromager d'Affanois. All depends on which manager is on duty it seems, sometimes they aren't so generous but they usually try to sell everything off before the store closes. Much better than stingey Woolies who have really cut back on their markdowns, seems they would rather throw it out than sell it off cheap.

I agree.. Woolworths don't even discount anything over 50% anymore.

But, I digress; I was talking about non-markdown Clearance items.

Fromager d'Affanois. Wasn't he the 4th Musketeer? LOL

Yeh each store marks them down at their own discretion. Normally left up to the point of sale team member.

  • You thinking of informing ACCC?

  • Every store is different…….dir

Product brand availability, product quality, customer service, all change from store to store.
