  • EKO 70" 4K $795

Me and Benny and Aaron and two Italian guys were looking for one of these…

    • +14

Quoting Kenny Vance on OzB is the most esoteric thing I've seen today

    • +1

For anyone who doesn't know it's a reference to the song 'Looking for an Echo' by Kenny Vance.

Did my research for this one.

Guess we found the answer to our sound?

      • Ol' 55 did a grouse version of that song, and I play it all the time

  • +16

After working with an Android TV yesterday, a TCL, which seemed to take a minute to turn on, and not much better turning off, the first thing I'd be checking with a new tv is its 'boot time'.

    • +4

After working with an Android TV yesterday, a TCL, which seemed to take a minute to turn on, and not much better turning off

What model do you have ?

Mine takes about 2 sec to turn on, and < 1 sec to close.

      • +4

Same here. I have two Sony and one TCL ANdroid TVs and the TCL boots up fastest! Only a couple of seconds

        • +1

Mine's a 55C715. boot is within 10 seconds from 'full off' and around 0.5 seconds from standby mode

          • @mingofmongo: I have the 50C715. Rarely turn it off fully unless an app is playing up.

      • It was a 65C6US

        • I have a 55C2US and the cold boot time isn't fantastic at around 45-60secs. The standby mode is pretty bearable though at around ~5seconds

        • +1

Yep that's pretty standard, as long as you're not in a hurry to watch something it does the job.
Having said that the starter died on mine (55c2us) and is currently a warranty claim.

The latest update slowed it considerably. I think when i bought it it took ~20 seconds and now is out to 45-50 secs (this is with fast boot enabled)

      • +1

5 second on max, 2 secs off. Nothing wrong with TCL

    • +5

Thats probably because the fast boot wasnt enabled.

      • Thanks. I'll let the owner know.

      • +2

With fast boot enabled I was still getting these boot times unfortunately after the last update

      • I have this enabled on my TCL, and it's great when it works… but once like every 5 days it'll revert to a normal boot up and take over 2 minutes. It makes me wonder if it does this after automatically updating or something. I just wish it would tell me why it does it.The most frustrating thing is that it doesn't happen often enough for me to bother trying to claim it as a fault under warranty. Sometimes it will also start without the wifi on.
Back in 2018 it would even boot into shop mode despite changing everything over in the settings and dev settings.
Support eventually gave me the next version of Android in Beta and it stopped the shop issue.
I'm probably going to fork out for a samsung next time to avoid this crap

        • +2

Back in 2019, OTA update screwed my OS. I contacted the TCL support and they provided me with the stable version of Android and I manually updated the OS. It has been working very well since then. Bootup time is not a concern for me. I dont mind waiting for a minute. Eveything else works fine.I mostly use it for Netflix, Primevideo, youtube, Optus sports, Kayo and plex. Kodi is working well too. I even stopped using my android TV box.

    • I own both a TCL Q-Led and EKO 75" and the EKO is 10x faster than the TCL.

    • Tcl power on- there’s a setting in the system that will cut the start up to seconds, settings - power options and switch on ‘ instant power on!

    • my Hisense 65inch taking about 30s to turn on…. too long!

      • +1

Hisense TVs are really let down by the operating system they use.

      • My 65 4k Hisense takes around 2-3 seconds to boot.
        Which model do you have?

        • what!!!!!
          my model is 65K700UWD

          • @qq123456a: My Hisense 55Q8 takes about 3 seconds as well.

    • I also have TCL nightmares, endless firmware upgrade/downgrade, hoping it would work like a normal TV but let down every once awhile when it starts playing up again, my latest problem is it random start up by itself, perfect for Halloween I guess?

  • +7

As someone who's not in an immediate rush to get a TV, in your opinions, is it worth to snag this or wait for further sales (Black Friday, Christmas) throughout the year?

    • I am holding out, I feel Sony is gonna have some amazing deals come Christmas time.

      • I held off on the 65 x900h at $1995 hoping there is a better Black Friday deal. Sony usually do.

        • I'm thinking it will reach $1700

    • +2

I doubt the big brands will even come close to this in price but if you are happy to pay a bit more I would be shocked if there wasn't a sale on Hisense or Samsung come Christmas

    • +2

If you've got a little more in your budget, I would wait until a TCL or a Samsung Crystal (budget) model drop to $1-1.5k for this size. But I can't imagine you'll see Samsung's Q range or any Sony's at the same price.

  • -1

Any change that this TV comes out of the same factory as the better known brands?

    • that doesn't mean it's as good…

      • I didn't imply it would be … just curious.

        • +10

I didn't imply it would be

Actually, your question did imply it.

    • +1

More likely it comes out of the same factory as other generic label frankenstein assorted brands / models. Can be solid value depending on use case and luck, but go in eyes open.

      • +1

        but go in eyes open.

You can't tell me what to do.

    • +1

I believe Changhong (Now rebranded to Chiq) make a lot of these generic Android TV's. No idea if they make this one though. TCL for example make the JB Hi-Fi FFalcon brand. TV's.

      • (Now rebranded to Chiq)

Ventilation on this is not good…

Only buy if you don't mind having a hot Chiq…

  • Good price but probably had a garbage panel.

    • +16

….so it has a good panel now? :)

      • +3

Phew that was a close one, glad it has been fixed

    no stock in vic?

    • Looks like no stock in Brisbane either.

    • no stock anymore, maybe hasnt been put into the system yet :(

  • +1

People complain, but surely the panel quality is lightyears ahead of anything from 5 years ago.

    It's $800, ridiculous.

I paid $599 for 65" ALDI over 2 years ago tho. My mates LG $1,800 panel shits on it clearly but triple the price.

    • +6

surely the panel quality is lightyears ahead of anything from 5 years ago

What's that based on, apart from a feeling?

      • +3

Surely means implying as in there's a good chance technology has reduced in cost in that period of time to make it more affordable.

        • +1

If we're talking certain price ranges, then probably yes. But like you added: that expensive LG might stay better than cheap models for a couple of years more.

        • +1

As much as technology "advances" so can complexity and definitely the creative ways of skimping to keep costs low at the bottom end of the market.

    • +1

Lol, very poor logic there. These panels are cheapest of the cheap, and likely won’t be better than a decent panel from 5 years ago.

I had a 65 inch 1080p Samsung that cost me $2k back in 2013, and it was easily better than the cheap TVs you got five years later. Sold it for $500 at just over 5 years old too, still looked great.

  • +3

    Great price.

    • +4

But is is great value ?

      • +2

Yes, is is great value indeed.

  • Anyone knows the warranty period?

  • No delivery or store my area : (

Did it sell out in 5 sec 's ?

  • +1

    Great price but no stock?

  • Is Android TV going to be as responsive, lag-free in 1-2-3 years form the purchase? Can it be replaced in future, if official updates slows it down?

    • +9

yeh it can be replaced as long as you have money.

      • I meant the OS, with some unoffical software.

    • +2

I have a 3-year old Sony 75x8500G and it still performs as well as it did on day one.

Having said that, we have an Nvidia Shield plugged in which we use more often than the built-in android OS, as it allows us to split the output to multiple TVs (one in the loungeroom, one in the kitchen, so we can watch TV shows whilst cooking/washing dishes/etc)

So yes, I'd say if you find it slowing down, you can add a $200 Shield and fix the problem

      • That model was only released last July.

        • then I must have the model number wrong - might be a 'D' instead of a 'G'. (we have a 55x8500G in the bedroom, must have got them mixed up)

      • I second the Nvidia Shield suggestion, one the best AV purchases I've made. How do you split the Shield's output to multiple TVs?

        • I use a Denon X3400 amp (courtesy of the amazon.de bargain here a year or so ago) which allows you to split an input across multiple zones. I imagine you could do the same with a cheaper amp, or possibly an HDMI splitter from Jaycar provided it doesn't stuff up the HDCP.

    • Can't see why it wouldn't be, but if it does get bad I'd just buy a media box like the new Chromecast and use that. My TVs are smart TVs but I still use media boxes as they're just better.

      • +1

And when the tv manufacturer stop updating the TV smarts you won't care. You will just change the media box whenever you want an upgrade.

    • Just plug in a new media box if it starts to drag, assuming the TV even works in 3 years. My Mum always buys these crazy cheap TVs, she didn’t even get 2 years out of the last one before it died.

      • FWIW I have a TV that I don't use much. It's a cheapass Dick Smith 50" from maybe 8 years ago. It still works fine when I do use it.

        • Obviously both our experiences are anecdotal, mine has just been that these cheapy TVs have a greater chance of dying young. I’m sure plenty survive longer.

  • I cant see what wall mount bracket this will use? any ideas?

  • To those who see 'no stock': give your local store a call, inventory shown online is often inaccurate.

  • SO cruel - stuck with an old 1080p LG from 2012 and just need to convince the Mrs - but would love (OLED) but trying to sell a kidney to pay for either the Sony x900h 65" or LG Nano91 65" - but then one of these comes along and while it would be the better $$$ for the budget - I just can't bring myself to….

Yet coming from a 8 yr old LCD - this would have to be better…..wouldn't it???

    Frustrated

    • +1

Not sure…same question here. I've got an 11 year old Samsung that was pretty good at the time…wondering if this would be better. Use an Android box for streaming, so not worried about smart functions.

      • Bout the same - Apple TV 4k + game consoles + Fetch Box
…..live tv and its internal apps will be used .5% of the time.

      • +1

it's a bit hit and miss with the 4k panels.

Our 2010 Samsung 1080p LED tv has better image quality than my new TCL 4k tv at 720p and 1080p, with sport being one of the stand outs. Having said that, if you're watching 4k content the TCL would win hands down.

As for the smart features, i'd buy it purely for these

        • Our 2010 Samsung 1080p LED tv has better image quality than my new TCL 4k tv at 720p and 1080p

Just wondering, are they the same tier? As in, is it a midrange/top-end Samsung TV vs entry-level TCL?

          • +1

@eug: Was probably a $2000 samsung vs $1200 tcl, but yeah in 10 years I would've thought the sd
/hd image reproduction would have been better. The tcl is definitely more "blocky"

            • +1

              @Drakesy:

Ahh. Are they the same screen size? Bigger screens would show scaling artifacts more clearly than smaller ones.

I think the big names (Sony, LG) have better image processing and scaling than the cheaper brands (Hisense, TCL). You get what you pay for I guess!

              • @eug: Yeah the sony upscaling is incredible, and makes lower res content actually look good on large 4k screens

Had a number of other issues with sony though .. and watch out the sony official ebay store are thieves

        • How the remote? - people often say the cheapies have crap response on the remotes.

          • +1

@naphman: Remotes on the tcl are amazing responsive and don't even have to be pointed at the TV to work for some reason

            • @Drakesy: ok - TCL is on the other list between this and the Sony or the Nano91 - probably best I chill and work a little more to the TCL - Their reviews are pretty good else as I read - good to know that their remotes are good too - it would bug the Mrs (and me i guess) .

              What TCL do you have?

    • +1

the picture quality on this would probably be better than an 8-year old LG 1080p panel. If you're going to be waiting for spousal approval for another 2-3 years, may as well jump in now and get this one.

    • +2

Picture quality would be better, but motion and possibly black levels would not be. If you watch a lot of sport this would not be a good choice. I have the 50" version as a secondary TV. It's bloody great value and looks amazing with animation etc however black levels are poor on dark shows (crushing etc) and motion in sport is not smooth. Android TV is great and in my experience so far is quite snappy.

I'd buy another in an absolute heartbeat for the purpose I use it, but would not want one as my primary TV.

      • Ahhh ok - yea it would be the primary TV…hmmmm

Thanks for the info + everyone else here too!

    • -3

I'd take an 8yo 1080p Sony or Samsung over a 2020 4k TCL/Hisense/EKO. Assuming panel size is the same.

      • Don't forget that there are different tiers within each brand. I would absolutely take a 4K Hisense 55Q8 (quantum dot, FALD, 1000nit, Dolby Vision HDR, Bluetooth) over a 55" FHD ES6500 Samsung from 2012. Don't let the badge cloud your decision.

  • My mate has this one, even with 'fast boot' it's so slow and unresponsive

    • How slow is it?

      • +1

think ~ 5 second delay switching from one channel to another
