Tile Trackers Question

I want to get a tile tracker for my son to use on his AirPods.

I’ve read some reviews that the tiles lose connectivity and can be pointless.

But I was thinking; if I download the tile app on multiple devices in our home will that make the tile higher chance of being found if he can’t find them?

My understanding is they have a range of up to 50m and all that's required is any phone with the app on it be within that range. I got some for my parents as they leave their keys all over the place and they've been great.

    • i got a Tile for my dad, who also kept losing his keys

You just keep walking around your house until it picks it up.

  • Yes, but unless your house is huge, it is not necessary.

If you're with Telstra you can get Telstra Locator for $10 a month without any commitment.

You get 2 bluetooth trackers (basically the same as Tiles, except the community is everyone with the Telstra app on their phone) and a wifi tracker (same as bluetooth + uses Telstra phone boxes and home modems to update location) as a starter pack for free.

Basically $10 for a month of Locator and the 3 tags. Way better deal than Tiles for short term tracking as you can cancel whenever, but obviously not that great long term as it adds up. Good way to try out tracker devices though.

    • Interesting, never knew about this option. Can’t this be used as a cheap fleet management method for a bunch of vehicles?

      • Absolutely, they have an enterprise version of it called track & monitor: https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/products/inte…

Their Cat M1 enterprise trackers are cool as, had the opportunity to trial a beta version a bit ago. Never seen anything the size of an egg have solid location tracking in the bush before, but I think there's competition on that front now.

That they all use Bluetooth(which I think is poor overall as relates to connectivity) is a big "no" for me.

"If you're with Telstra you can get Telstra Locator for $10 a month without any commitment." that commitment of $10/month would quickly add up IMHO

Bluetooth isn't that bad for stuff like keys, easy way to find out which pocket/drawer/couch keys or headphones are in, being small and a year+ battery life.

The upfront cost is way lower with Locator, but ongoing cost is way higher, $120 a year is way too steep for tracking. Would only really recommend it for a few months to try it out, then move to long-term options if you like it.

      • Thanks for replying.

In my 2 story brick box I have great difficulty with Bluetooth connected speakers not connecting floor to floor which strongly influenced my posting. If these have the same issues then they would be semi-useless - and yes, I suppose the ability to stage a walk around would help.

I think the better solution is to not buy your son a tracking tile and instead use this to teach him the lesson that he needs to look after his belongings. If he loses them and cannot find them then too bad, he can get a job and buy another pair himself.

    • A lesson to be sure, the successful learning from it may be a real world problem (speaking for my ancient unlearned self).

    • He will be paying for both the tracker and air pods out of his birthday money. Not old enough to work legally yet. Only chores

Just remembered, don't airpods have a built in locating function via the iphone?

    • Only when they're not in the case

      • That's sort of useless then. If they're not in the case they're in your ears and if you can't find them then you've got bigger problems.
