Just got a stack of these in at work and it seems like a good deal especially as you really need two of these to make full use of the tracking functionality.
If you mention Ozbargain when ordering I can do free freight as well. If ordering online just mention this in the comments and we will remove the freight cost for delivery in Australia when we process your order.

seems like a good offer, but can it play Angry Birds ?

  • There is also a bundle with Topo maps and accessories. Click the Package Deals tab.

Purchased from these people Friday, they are knowledgeble and seem to have good prices.

    • I know it must be obvious but where is the package deal Tab?

      Thanks

  • HI,
Is it possible to buy just one unit?
    Thank

    • Unfortunately due to the way we buy them from Garmin we are only able to sell them as a pair.

    • Sure… buy with a friend… split the package (assuming it has 2x chargers, like even the cheapest cordless phone package would do) between yourselves.

How would just 1 give you optimal value from this kind of unit?

      • +1

These are 2 full retail boxes with all the standard accessories, splitting it with a friend is pretty much exactly what this deal is designed for.

  • +1

Okay - I've taken a bite! - However, the shopping cart is a bit confusing as when you add to cart it adds one unit at half the price advertised - the punter will need to set qty to 2 to bring the price back to $589…….Or will I get 4 units :)

    • Whoops, a bit a glitch in our website on the package deals. We are working on fixing it now. You will only need to add one item to get two units for $589.

  • Marine users have the best value, IMO.

    Consider Vertex-Horizon's HX851S:

    • 6 watt transmitters (vs 5 watts, our ACMA's max transmit power for UHF CB radios)
    • GPS
    • displays Latitude & Longitude on-screen, with other info
    • DCS to poll & help you navigate yourself to another radio/marine craft
    • I think it even exports the GPS coordinates to an external divice,
eg, larger screen map that keeps itself focused on your location & area
    • floats in water (or was that the HX751..?)
    • glows in the dark (eg, while floating)
    • waterproof
    • strobe light
    • emergency button (sends your call & location to nearby ships + [SOS-like] message)
    • lots of other cool features that don't come to mind at the moment ;-)

Of course (except to save lives) you can't use an HX-851S for land-to-land comms :-/
It's strictly a Marine VHF radio

(Older HX850S costs $349 incl shipping, eg, from PrestigeCom.com.au)

Radio Amateurs have an even -better- system (based on APRS), IMO, because
    - in situations where you don't have a direct radio link to those who can offer assistance - the APRS protocol can automatically -relay- your radio's or any other radio's signals (eg, in an area, or further afield), so that any Internet user can get a radio's location (ie, if it's sent by that radio, as it moves around - in a vehicle, on a boat or ship or in an aircraft).

Tracking -several- radios on ONE map is possible, sending own text messages, etc. etc. (Imagine seeing where everyone is on ONE map…)

    What's more…

Radio Amateurs can modify their older gear to incorporate APRS + GPS technologies, so they don't have to replace the entire radio; maybe just add APRS and a GPS.

Of course, it takes some knowledge of Electronics… but that that's what "Ham" Radio is all about. :-)

  • So, what's the mAh rating of the (rechargable) included LitiumIon battery back,
    that 4 AA batteries out-lasts that battery's expected run-time by 4 hours…?

What kind of AA cells do they assume would be replacing the LiIon battery pack?

    • The standard battery is a 7.2V 2400mAh 17.8Wh Li-ion. Garmin normally quote figures based on alkaline AA batteries.

      • Sounds pretty good… of course the GPS is a relatively constant load…
The radio's load would rise when transmitting.

Has it a medium & low power setting, to extend operating time of the pair (when close to the other radio)?

Oh… how long does this offer last for?

        • You can set the transmitting power to 1/2, 2 or 5 Watts.
This offer is while stocks last, but we have quite a few of them.

  • It says it includes software to load custom maps.
What format does your data have to be?

ie can I load ECW, TIFF, SHP, CAD, TAB?

NVM: read blog incorrect. Is compatible w/ free software: Custom Maps

  • How does the GPS in this compare to the 62SC?

    • The reception is on par with the 62SC. Features are pretty much the same, but the 62SC has a camera and the Rino is a touch screen.

  • Would I be correct in presuming thet the up to 14 hours battery life is based on the radio set on the 0.5w setting?

    • Garmin don't publish how they figure out battery life, but your assumption would be accurate. The more and higher power you use the radio, the shorter the battery life is going to be.

  • Give us a good deal on the Garmin 96C!

    • Y U NO DO GOOD DEAL GARMIN 96C?!

      • I can't do any huge deals on the 96C. Best I could do would be $495 + shipping.

  • With the Paqckage Deal, is there 2 of each of the added accessories? eg. 2 x top maps, 2 x mounts etc.

    • The package deal is just for the one topo map and mount, but if you want another set we would do the package price on the extra set which works out to be an extra $200.

      • Can the GPS be switched Off - to extend battery life - eg, when stationary & awaiting a call?

        • The GPS and radio can be switched on and off separately.

  • Does the Aus version have the capabilities of utilising FRS / GMRS?
    Or is it only UHF

    • The Australian version is UHF only. FRS/GMRS are not licenced for use in Australia. The tracking and messaging functions still work over UHF.

      • UHF CB Radio Service = UHF CBRS

I noticed 80 channels (vs 20-something FRS/GMRS for the US model)

Is there a "mod" to enable it work - when used by licensed Radio Amateurs - on the 70 cm Ham band (ie, 430 - 450 MHz, see WIA.org.au for band plans of repeaters, simplex & other well-defined frequencies for the Aussie 70 cm band)?
