50% off Haldiram's Frozen Indian Food Variety (E.g. Samosas $5, RRP $10) @ Coles (Selected Stores)

1460

A few frozen samosa packs are for 50% off in Coles this week. They can be deep fried (for the most tasty and authentic output), air-fried or oven-baked.

Spice level for each option above should be mentioned on the pack, just in case you are curious. No. 1 and 4 above are small ones and the remaining two are regular sizes.

Below are some other frozen food items on 50% off from their wide range - there're hardly any two snacks that are similar so worth trying at least a few, if not all. Some of these are stuffed bread variety and the others are fast food dishes/ snacks. All this stuff should be yummy:

Quick definitions/ translation for easy reference (this is based on very general usage and content commonly found on internet):

samosa = a fried pastry with a savoury filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, etc and had with (tamarind + dates) chutney or (coriander + mint + green chilli) chutney
paneer = cottage cheese
aloo = potato
pakora / vada = fritters
roti / chapati = flatbreads made with wheat-flour dough
paratha = unleavened flatbreads which are cooked with oil, butter or ghee on flat pan. They are more oily and thicker than plain rotis. Parathas can be stuffed or plain. Often had as breakfast.
tikki = patties
idli = type of savoury ricecakes, made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. Often had as breakfast, more commonly in Southern India.

    what's everyone's favourite here?

    • +2

      Samosa

      • How spicy are the samosas? (Please keep in mind that I find mild Nando's bearable, and that Korean spicy Ramen noodles totally unbearable)

    • These items aren't really comparable - they are all different. Some are stuffed flatbreads and the rest are street food/ snacks/ fast food dishes from different regions of India. Samosas are probably more popular globally.

      • +1

Upvoted for the amount of effort mate

  • +1

If you know which are which consider putting translations op, pander is cheese and aloo is potato I believe

    • +1

      "paneer" is cottage cheese

      • -2

It autocorrected :) please translate them all

  • +4

Outstanding. My yearly binge watching session for how can she slap will be well fed.

  • +2

Pretty good range, thanks for the heads up.

  • +6

    Not in VIC

    • +1

      Is this true? That sucks.

    • +1

      What!!!

    • +1

Can only find Sabrini and Coles own brands samosas.

      • +1

Sabrini is better than Haldiram. That should be on half price 🤞🏼

        • It is on the list above but only one type. Not sure what 'chilli milli' variant means in terms of spice level.

          • +2

@virhlpool: If we talk in the range of 1-10, chilli milli is 15. It took me more than 2 months to finish my last pack.

            • @jsb: Lol.. should steer away from it then. Haldiram's 'Hot and Spicy' should be that spicy probably but the other two options would be 'medium', I assume.

        • Lol believe me Haldirams have no comparison in terms of quality and taste. I tried Sabrinis Mumbai Vada pav and it was full of oil and pathetic.

  • +2

    Aloo paratha.

  • +2

Damn reading this deal has made me serious hungry.

  • Not in SA.

    • +1

Just bought Sabrini brand at half price from Coles Firle, SA. Almost all Indian frozen food varieties were half price. Didn't see Haldiram's brand.

  • Not in qld

    • +3

It is. Got some items at my local on the GC this afternoon.

    • Try a different store. Picked up a good variety of these in Brisbane today.

  • +5

Haldiram is legit Indian brand. I saw it in the supermarket when I was in India.

    • +2

Haldiram is the biggest savoury brand in India. Prob worth a few billion $$. Still I would avoid their imported packed frozen stuff . Go for fresh stuff or buy from Indian store. Samosa are now made in Australia too. Katoomba brand

    • +2

Well, it's a US$3 billion brand as per a quick Google search so being legit or not isn't a question.

    • And the best street food quality served in northern part of India

  • So been in VIC for 2 years… Why don't they sell Samoosa's with meat in?

    • +5

Samosa is primarily a vegetarian dish. There are meat variants (you may find in some restaurants) but not as popular as the original one.

    • +3

Why need meat if they taste good? Most somosa are vegetarian
I thought cows were sacred in India?

      • -3

I have an indian friend strangely ( well i don't get it) the women can't eat beef but the men can and they can only eat meat at certain times. That's probably why most traditional samosas are vegetarian

        • -1

Well there is still dairy in almost all somosas so who really knows.
Probably just a spiritual thing (not an animal welfare thing)
Good getting the odd one when I see them at indian shops or markets

      • They do eat beef in some parts of India. I had beef down south in Kochi in a restaurant, people there were majority Christians not Hindu.

      • +1

I think all the animals should be sacred let alone cow and no animal should be killed except probably mosquitos and rats (for hygenic purposes). We are already seeing COVID and global warming being caused because of unhealthy and excessive animal reproductions.

        • +1

Exactly, i don't eat them and find the double standards pretty absurd - people eat pigs, cows etc but wouldn't eat a dog or a cat.

Anyway it's probably not the thread for this discussion but was implying people don't always need meat and they won't get protein deficient missing a meat meal. I don't mind the odd oven treat but they are mostly very unhealthy, easy enough to make your own wedges in the air fryer for cheap. Some variety good though

    • -1

I guess these Samosa's are targetting mainly for the Indian people who prefer the veg variety.

You can other varieties like sambousek which is sort of middle eastern meat samosa in middle eastern restaurants but I dont think they are available in Super market stores.

  • +1

Wish they bring the sweets too

  • +1

    mhmm

  • +3

Usually, you can get a 1.85 kg hot and spicy samosa big pack for AUD 12-13 In Indian shops. ( E.g, Udaya spices in Wentworthville, NSW.)
But this is great value if you want to try out the flavours.
Haldirams are one of the best in terms of authentic Indian flavours.
And yes, you do get sweets too in Coles as well as a number of Indian shops.

    • Is there a gluten free samosa available?

  • I love real Indian samosas but most of them you buy from frozen are no good, can anyone actually recommend these and I do like spicy food and I'm good with a real spice.

    • Highly recommended. Make sure they are full size though. Not the party size ones.

      • +2

Unlike most party sized samosas which have pastry layer instead of the original flour layer, I believe these cocktail samosas posted here are just like the standard sized ones in terms of recipe and ingredients.

    • +1

These Samosa's are good enough but if you search Facebook Marketplace, there might be someone selling fresh Indian Samosa's, you just place an order and pick it up in some time.

  • Anyone know if any items are vegan? Thanks

    • +2

Most of these are vegan except those containing Panneer or Butter. Check the ingredients before buying.

      • Thanks mate.

        Assuming most will have eggs/butter/cheese…

        • +2

Not really. Egg is rarely an ingredient in those and they don't use butter because it's expensive. Paneer is the only cheese.

All the parathas except paneer ones, samosas and bhajis should be vegan.

    • They wouldn't be but look on the back, for some reason dairly is put in most stuff for no reason just the industry ruling the roost.

May as well go to a korean store get some dumplings

  • -3

30 pk paratha during Costco special is $7.99… no deal…

    • Link please. Which type of parathas and which brand?

      • Katoomba 30pk. Costco is bricks n mortar store so no link I believe.

        • +1

But they aren't the same as what's posted on this deal. Leave aside the different brands, they are totally different products. The parathas on the list here are stuffed ones. Not like the ones you're referring to.

        • no deal…

How could you have got that more wrong?? Try reading Deals before commenting!

Totally different product to those in this Deal! These stuffed paratha are much tastier!

Your suggestion is only available at 11 locations in Australia, so unavailable to most compared to Coles.

And your same paratha cost more @Costco!!
Coles deal is $4.50 for Katoomba 20pk!

    • +1

I didn't know Costco had a store in every town like Coles does.

      • Yes, this is only for the ‘lucky‘ ones living in the bigger capital Cities in the east coast.

        • A total of 11 stores in areas far from major city centres of Australia. Wouldn't consider living there "lucky" myself!

Coles has 807 supermarkets throughout Australia.

    • Coles are cheaper than Costco! (equivalent to $6.75 for 30)
      Bought plain ones today.

  • Which one is the best?

  • +1

You can Bake Samosas in an Oven or air fryer and they are delicious. Traditionally they are deep fried but baking them is as good if you are health-conscious

    • Not 'as good' but 'good enough'. If baking was as good and delicious option, the whole country wouldn't eat deep fried samosas.

  • +1

Punjabi Samosa, Lacha parantha and Aaloo tikki , these all sound good…

Cottage Cheese - Paneer made of milk and that too exported, not sure how would it be.

Haldiram is massive, I strongly trust their products (except paneer one). They have giant food courts in India with 100+ delicious options, well maintained hygiene.

    GettyImage of their foodcourt: https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/haldiram-outlet-inside-…

    • Paneer made of milk and that too exported, not sure how would it be.

I dont know about these ones specifically but many Indian dairy items in Australia actually come from Netherlands or Canada. I guess because of regulations.

      • or maybe they have indian cows….

  • Bloody hell. Went to Woolies and they didn't even stock them. Probably only available at places with larger sub continental population?

    • +1

This post is for Coles though.

      • +1

        Bahaha well that explains everything!

        • ha, forgot about these and walked past and grabbed a few when at Coles yesterday.
Air fryer seems like the go

  • +1

Managed to get the last box on day 2 of the catalogue at my local Coles. Cooked in air fryer. We’re nice but nothing amazing. The box takes up heaps of freezer space. If probably only buy again if I knew I’d be using them soon.

  • +1

Those Batata Vadas are good, original got one box then got another two the other night while still half price..
