Seems not a bad deal, especially it comes with upgradable ram/ssd slots:

  • Spare SO-DIMM slot
  • Dual SSD slot

The only downside is the screen is only 250nits.

  • it’s only 14” screen so the 250 nits isn’t a big issue, for extended work you would use external screen.

14” laptops are about mobility and fitting into back packs and chair swing out at lectures, schools desks, etc.

    • Mobility is why you need the brightness even more - working outdoors or where there's unpredictable amounts of daylight coming into the space.

I get it around $939.83 at the end of July and that's with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and AX200 WiFi upgrade. Probably better to wait it out more, Black Friday is next month.

    • Good point, that would be closer to the spec I would be happy with. I know I probably dont NEED 16gb for general use on a laptop, but I would feel better about having it. My current laptop is an Intel Atom with 4GB ram, and it is pretty much unusable, so anything would feel like a massive upgrade TBH :)

      • Highly recommended to get 16GB as it will run in dual channel and speed up Ryzen CPU. The original 8GB is welded so that's the only way you get dual channel. Should not get 16GB or 32GB stick upgrade (does it even support 32GB stick?) as then it will run in single channel.

I think if you add a 16GB module, you will still run in dual channel for 16GB, but then the extra 8GB from that module will run in single channel mode. Im sure I read that somewhere, but I could be wrong. But either way, adding an extra 8gb for 16 total would make more sense to most people anyway.
Seems weird that they would have it running in single channel as standard, I think the soldered chips are actually already running in dual channel

          • @DanielP2: Nope. That's not how it works as the laptop only has 2 SO-DIMM slots.

On PC with 4 SO-DIMM you can run 2x8 and 2x16 and get dual channel. It's also possible to run 2x8 and 1x16 together which one is a dual and the other single. But you can't call 1x8 and 1x16 dual channel for obvious reason. You need matching SO-DIMM to get dual channel.

The reason it runs single is cost cutting. It's $90 to upgrade which makes them money (you can do it yourself cheaper around $50).

            • @Bigboomboom: oh well, at least this one seems to be 8gb soldered with a spare slot, and not 4+4

            • +1

@Bigboomboom: They're not wrong, that is one way it can work. It's called flex mode, and allows exactly what was described with only 2 slots and mismatched capacities. I don't know if the Lenovo laptops implement it (surely it will be known by now if one does the research) but I would imagine it's likely. The APU does support it at least.

              • @ethan961: I thought so, but I didnt want to argue it because Bigboomboom seemed pretty sure of himself. The memory module in the slot does not need to match the soldered RAM.

                • @DanielP2: I just ordered this one. Should I add 16gb ram instead of 8gb only? Will it be better? Cheers

                  • @zeus2212: completely up to you. If it was me I would only add 8GB. You will only end up with 16GB running in dual channel. If you add an extra 16gb, the remaining 8GB will run in single channel mode. adding only 8GB makes more sense, and should be plenty for most tasks. Also, I should add, remember I dont own one of these, so dont take what I say as being 100% correct, google it to confirm! :)

    • 16gb as dual or single channel ?

      • Dual. The welded SO-DIMM is 8GB so if you put in another 8GB on the 2nd slot it will be dual.

It does suck though how manufacturers still seem to class AMD laptops as budget laptops. Premium screen options and premium build materials are generally limited to Intel. You cant argue with the price on this one tho, 250nit screen or not.

    • I don't think that hurt though, as this way it will introduce Ryzen laptop to the mass. People would be more hesitant to buy top price Ryzen laptops as they still think Intel is faster and cooler (not anymore with Zen 2 and upcoming Zen 3).

    • Not really, HP and Asus both make AMD versions of the more premium Zenbook and Envy series that are just as quality as their intel counterparts. No AMOLED HP Spectre with AMD yet but, hey, it's a really solid start. Yeah there are a lot of average build laptops with AMD stuff but there are also budget laptops with the i7.

      • Look at the number of options available for intel vs AMD though. I want a Lenovo yoga slim 7 with 16gb ram and 512GB ssd and maybe a 4700u. Closest thing available is exclusive to Harvey Norman, costs a fortune, and as it's an exclusiveis unlikely to receive decent discounts
