Ah well greater than 6 months so this is allowed.

If only my HFC was this this price / deal

    • It will never be

      • +2

Why? Why is this only applicable to FTTB? Was is the business case for providing such a good offer to FTTB customers but not HFC?

        • +15

Because this has nothing to do with NBN, and NBN prices especially with CVC pricing, will never be this cheap.

This product is for TPG/iiNet (Wondercom) FTTB VDSL2 at select apartments around Australia

        • +9

Because NBN charges ISPs like $45 or something just to connect to NBN. Add in gst and you’re already hitting $50ish and no CVC or margin for costs, let alone profit.

  • +1

    Any good deal for HFC?

    • Not from iiNet/TPG.

    • I researched a lot in the past few days and couldn't find such a good deal for HFC!

Even NBN50 is priced around $70 + cost of the modem

      • +1

How come you were researching HFC? when you can get TPG FTTB Non NBN? There is nothing comparable

        • Well, I was researching all the options as NBN is also available for my building.

          • +2

@eatcroissants: Fair enough. You won't find a product that's cheaper than this. TPG FTTB Non NBN is the best Broadband you can get. Better than NBN FTTB.

            • @Turd: I agree.

Also NBN speeds are reallyyy slow at night.

ATM I have optus nbn - during the day the speed is around 60mbps download and at night it drops to 30mbps. That's why I opted for iinet FTTB for my new apartment plus it doesn't hurt to get free internet for 3 months.

              • @eatcroissants: For sure.

Also this post is a dupe though.

And iiNet FTTB is non NBN, in your case.

                • +2

@Turd: The previous post was a while ago so I thought it might be worth posting this.

Also, I am new to ozbargain - not sure how to delete a post

              • @eatcroissants: Get a better ISP?
My day time and night time speed are always the same

              • @eatcroissants: That's an Optus issue though. You can't just say "NBN is reallyyy slow at night", you should say "Optus NBN in my area is reallyyy slow at night".

Change to a different NBN RSP and your night slowness will more than likely disappear.

                • @bonezAU: I have used other providers in the past as well.

Its not just about Optus, its about NBN.

        • -1

Nothing comparable? Perhaps you might want to clarify that. I'm on a 1000Mbps FttP NBN, I think that is better.

      • +1

I'm also on the lookout for a better HFC plan but doesn't seem like much around- if anything prices have gone up for lower speed since this time last year I've noticed.

Am with Belong HFC unlimited, which was originally a 50 speed plan $55 or $60 for the first 6 months (no contract), well out of that and since then they've changed the plans so got downgraded to a 30 speed plan. Like not having a contract (or 6 months ok if free modem), not sure if there is anything better for under $60/month? Most are ~70/month for 20-25mpbs. Launtel seem ok but the daily charge is still $65-70.

        • Internode have $60 for NBN50 for 6 months. But it'd just really TPG. Unsure if you wanna join.

        • Tangerine is $60 for NBN50 and 14 days trial

Kogan is $63.50 for NBN50 and you can get couple of months free internet if you get the Kogan black credit card

          • @eatcroissants: Thanks, may look at Tangerine, depends if it's worth 20kpbs increase, maybe not for the hassle, would want another 6 month deal that's a bit cheaper, was able to sell the Aussie BB modem (too cheap though @ $50), should have kept it hard to sell the belong one.

            • @G-rig: BYO modem $9 - the Belong 4353 should work fine i would assume?
Tangerine looks good and just change again in 6 months?
Should ask Belong to give me a speed bump and would stay :).

Edit: Belong 65$ 12 months contract though, or $70/m no contract (40 speed) however noticed there is 80$ (mobile) credit included which you can sell but only got about $40-45 for the last one. May as well stay on 60/m no contract 30 speed ,or Tangerine

              • @G-rig:

Edit: Belong 65$ 12 months contract though, or $70/m no contract (40 speed) however noticed there is 80$ (mobile) credit included which you can sell but only got about $40-45 for the last one. May as well stay on 60/m no contract 30 speed ,or Tangerine

Where does it say anything about the $80 credit?

                • @ElCheapoo: https://www.belong.com.au/broadband/nbn

"When you sign up to a Belong broadband plan, we will send you a mobile SIM included with your new modem, loaded with $80 free credit. This will be delivered in 2-5 days. When you receive the SIM, you can activate your Belong mobile service via the Belong app."

                  Probably for new customers

          • @eatcroissants: may as well try Tangerine
Same price as what i'm on but 50 speed not 30.
However mine is still $60/m after the first 6 months but could be something better around by then?

            • @G-rig: Yeah worth taking the advantage for atleast 6 months because providers often have promotions for new customers, so something better might be there after 6 months.

I would have gone with Tangerine if I was using NBN

              • @eatcroissants: Well I only gain 20mbps out of changing, same price $60/m

Then it goes to 70/month (where as mine doesn't) but you'd think something better may be around by then
                hmmm.

          • @eatcroissants: Hey, just curious to know how do I get couple of months free on Kogan black credit card?

  • Is this another NBN poaching network? Not that that's a bad thing.

    • +3

No, in most places this was there BEFORE NBN

      • NBN has wider coverage though whereas non-NBN FTTB is available for limited places/buildings

        • Yep, a VERY limited number of apartment buildings have this and it's second rate compared to NBN FttP which is what is installed in 99% of apartments built in the last 6 years. I would hate to be in a TPG only building, as you don't have access to all the providers on the NBN and limited to 90Mbps as there isn't fibre all the way into your apartment.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Most preexisting apartments have FTTB, cabling a building for fibre is disruptive, expensive and messy.
FTTB is a pretty good option IMHO.
Plus with FTTB you should eventually be able to get gigabit.

            • @Grok: Lets hope with this $7 extra levy, that gigabit can become available as a vaule add.

              • +1

@Crownanchor: I don't think TPG or NBNco would install fibre to apartments without the Body Corp actually asking and paying for the upgrade.

          • @[Deactivated]: If apartment has FTTP NBN and built in last 6 years TPG FTTB wouldn't exist there.

And as you well know NBN Co nor TPG wouldnt install and retrofit old apartments with Fibre if there is copper anyways.

            • -3

@Turd: And as you well know NBN Co nor TPG wouldnt install and retrofit old apartments with Fibre if there is copper anyways

The original Labour plan was to do exactly that, put fibre in every single home except out bush. It was a crazy plan.

So every unit building would need a massive refit and core drilling and laying conduit along the walls inside the unit.

It was a crazy plan, FTTB is fine in old units.

  • -6

The fact that they can offer these prices on their own infrastructure is proof that the NBN is communism.

I feel badly for those who were on Telstra HFC "Yeah, uhh, pay more for a lesser service because NBN now."

    • +3

I would never get Telstra - its just so expensive when you can literally get same speeds for lesser cost.

      • For NBN, yes - probably.

On HFC, Optus were never going to give you 110 down.

    • Na, you’re wrong. They run this network only to apartment buildings. One connection to the basement and they’ve connected hundreds of potential customers. If they had to run it to houses and rural properties, it would not be $59.99

      • My point is, every other connection is essentially state property.

  • +4

This is how much NBN FTTC should be

    • +1

Isnt it amazing? TPG even wants to reduce the price of the FTTB further, but is not able to due to some reason to do with Government.

      • +1

Prices may increase next year once the Government's "Broadband Tax" comes into affect.

        • What's this 'broadband tax'?

          • +1
            • @Turd: I though the $7 levy was already being charged, it was talked about a few years ago. I also recall recently about a tax, terrible when the government gets involved.

              • +1

@Crownanchor: Nope, it was supposed to be proposed July 2020, but has been postponed till Jan 1st 2021, due to the pandemic.

                • @Turd: Wow, and in the meantime Starlink is going to become more attractive, or is there going to be an Australian tax/levy on Starlink?

                  • @Crownanchor: This tax is on fixed broadband, and not on satellite or fixed wireless.

Basiclly government trying to protect it's own NBN choices and NBN roll outs.

So infrastructures such as Opticom, LBNCo, OpenNetworks and Redtrain amongst some others will all be affected by this "Broadband Tax"

                  • +1

@Crownanchor: Starlink, lol, crap ping, limited speeds, it's never going to beat a fibre service, but they love to make it sound like a game-changer.
It'll be great for those who don't have access to a fixed wire service, however, which is really what it'll be big at.

        • +1

Yep, if the government can't make the NBN better, they'll make the competitors more expensive.

          • @RedHab: If the government stuffs it up it will try to blame or tax the competition for its own incompetence.

  • Thought this was 900mbps for a second.

    • Haha it would so nice, isn't?

    • My expectations were a lot lower

I saw FTTC for a second

  • Can the fetch box they offered be used at any network or just at the home with the iinet connection?

  • what speed tier will this be on?

    • +1

      100/40

    • Their is no speed tier for TPG/iiNet FTTB - it's synced at 100/40 and typical speeds 90Mbps. There is no vectoring as NBNCo FTTB has vectoring so TPG can not have vectoring. So max you'll get after TCP/IP overheads of 100/40 is ~93-96 / 38

But I get 93/38 24/7 to Telstra speed test server..

      https://i.imgur.com/lDH4wgN.png

      https://i.imgur.com/gAXhyYO.png

      • cool thanks, if theres no speed tier what about minimum speeds then? Or does the speed range from 12-100?

        • Ive never had any slowdowns.

          4 tests every 3 hrs during a 24hr period: https://i.imgur.com/jeu3H54.png

          • @Turd: Cool thanks, i'm currently on Kogan 100/20 and my speeds are pretty good. Will I get similar speeds with this plan?

            https://www.speedtest.net/result/10274308275

            • @Homr: Does your building have both NBN and TPG/iiNet Non NBN FTTB?

TPG FTTB wont have over provisioning because it can not get those speeds due to lack of vectoring in VDSL2. Government orders that only NBNCo can have vectoring. So TPG will never get it.

But hey $59.99 93/38 is pretty good.

              • @Turd: I don't know what my apartment building has, how do I check? It's definitely NBN of some sort

                • @Homr: What does it say when you put your address into: https://www.iinet.net.au/fttb

If you can get it it will say "Awesome news! Ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Building broadband is available at your address."

                  • @Turd: Awesome news! NBN™ is available at your address.
Pick a plan below to get started.

                    59.95
                    69.99
                    74.99
                    99.99

                    • @Homr: Then you wont be able to get this FTTB Non NBN product.

                • @Homr: If you have Kogan (Vodafone NBN) you won't have TPG VDSL as well. It's one or the other.
Remember TPG VDSL is only in apartment buildings also, not free-standing homes.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Oh ok, I live in an apartment building so I thought I would've had a chance of being eligible

                    • @Homr: Some apartments have both TPG Non NBN AND NBN infrastructure.

Guess it's not profitable for TPG to install at your MDF.

                      Unlucky.

                  • @[Deactivated]: What? I can get Kogan NBN FTTB as well as TPG FTTB Non NBN in my place.

So incorrect to say you can only have one or the other.

  • We were on the iinet 100 plan, but they changed us back to the 50.
Optus 5g is a street away, and we are in between 2 towers.

    • What NBN Technology is your NBN?

      • Fttn

        • Do you have more than one phone socket in the home?

Is your copper lead-in directly connected to the modem and does not have other copper/cables connected in a bridge or star configuration?

          • @Turd: Only 1.

I recall there are only 2 wires, but it's been some time since i looked at it, so there could be 4.
            Correction
            There is a 2nd line.

            • @BewareOfThe Dog: Lead in cable is always 2 pairs. and only 1 pair is used.

So you just are far away from the Node? Thus slower speeds and/or other issues with the copper network.

Remember VDSL2 is highly affected by environmental effects, noo matter how big or small, and thus degradation over time will occur.

Nothing you can do if your internal home copper wiring is perfect.

  • +2

This is a long running deal. I got it roughly a year ago.

If you can get it, it's the best deal you'll get by a wide margin, unless you want over 100Mb/s.
It's only available to a few apartment buildings and I'm not sure if they're willing to add more.

    • +2

Cost benefit, and also NBNCo making it harder for other providers to go in there and install their stuff. NBNCo do not like all the Non NBNCo infrasctures.

  • Does FTTP count?
