I am after the same GPU MSI GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER VENTUS XS OC 6GB which has been on sale for $300 :). Nice GPU but saw some people said it might have coilwhine issue, but I dont know how true they claim

Rather go for the Asrock B550M Pro4

Seems pretty good and balanced overall! IMO just consider:

    • A case with a proper mesh front will be a bit better at keeping your components cool (e.g. CoolerMaster NR600), especially if you're keeping the CPU stock cooler. Your case seems OK though so I wouldn't change it if you're a fan of the look.
    • Getting a secondary, bigger drive (even just a spinning disc WD Blue 1TB or more) - 500GB SSD is enough for the system, applications and most files, but you might find yourself occasionally hamstrung (e.g. if you need more space for raw video files while editing)

The case you linked also looks good. Yes will get more SSD as I go along as I don’t think I need more storage at the moment…

      • Given your board choice has been criticised for having a weak VRM (not that it matters with 8 cores or less, and you've already bought it, it'll be fine) the case with more airflow would be even more important if you are planning any overclocking.

Mesh front cases are often quieter as the fans don't have to fight as hard to move the air too, so noise is another potential plus.

For another RGB mesh case option, check out the Coolermaster TD500 or the Phanteks P400A digital (the two I have short-listed for my kid's bling bling RGB build, cause she wants white, though they come in black too)

        • Great point:) will do some research tonight about over clocking and the 2 cases:)

Looks good but if you can spare any extra cash at all, I would kick up the GPU as much as possible (you should be able to get some really nice deals on RTX20XX cards now and in the coming weeks).

Also 500GB is not going to last you long… Upgrade to 1TB if it's going to be your only drive.

Obviously, this is only if you can afford it.

    • I think at the moment, only way I can up the GPU is by selling the keyboard. That should give me extra $150 spending power.

You could do the mouse too but yes I hear you.

In my personal opinion (and you'll get a bunch of different ones), the GPU is the most important part of a gaming rig. Obviously it depends on all the other bits and pieces, but getting a GPU bottleneck is a pain. If you're looking at upgrading the GPU in the not-too-distant future, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Also depends on the games you're after. But my vote always goes to maximum money on GPU first, above all else. You could maybe make do with a lesser keyboard for a while and upgrade that when the time comes?

It's hard to make the right decision, I know.

        • Had a look at my options, selling the keyboard will maybe get me to the 2060 range with the GPU.

I need to do more research on the performance differences between 1660S and 2060…..

@Aerith-Waifu: Do plenty of research. The 30XX series cards just came out, so expect prices of older generation cards to drop even more. There will be sales. I bought my 2070S about 3 months ago (because my old card wasn't keeping up with 1440 gaming) for COVID prices… I think I paid 880. Now you can get the same card for 550 on sale. The prices seriously drop.

You could look at getting a second hand budget card, and saving up for a really nice card in a few months, like a 3080 or something
Could prob get a second-hand 1660 for pretty cheap?

            • @spendybeans: Not much options in Perth at the moment. Seriously thinking of selling the keyboard and put money into a 2070 at the moment. But if 1660S comes down to $300 mark I will wait no longer

              • @Aerith-Waifu: Keep an eye on ebay, and FB marketplace can be really active.

good that you have deadlines and prices in mind… that's the way forward :)

Probably could do with a mech hdd
    500gb will fill up quick
    Def go 3600 too

    • 3600 is what I intended……but the price has been over $320 all this time…….waiting for it to go down under $300…..did miss the $192 deal for the 3300x also….

Needs more storage. Chuck in a 2TB HDD and you'll be golden.

Built almost the same build for my partner (Just used B450 as 550 didnt exist and a 1660TI as Super didnt exist) and it goes great for what she does.

I assume the 1660Super can game at 1440p? - Might be worth checking.

    • Yeap! Will be adding a HDD for sure later on. Never research if 1660 Super can do 1440 gaming. Will do some research

      • I'm guessing it could do 1440p gaming above 60fps, but not above 90fps which works out well for you cause you've only got a 75hz screen.

      • I'd suggest getting a cheap 1TB SSD like BX500 for games, fast enough for loading and no noise

        • Do you recommend 7200RPM HDD for games at all?

  • -2

I'd stick a DVD drive for the $20

  • Is your case big enough to hold the 3090 you might win in a competition next year? And enough room for all your potential hard drives?

    • +2

Hard drive wise yes. 3090 will never be won by me even there is only 2 people who entered……lol

      • I'd be interested in being the other person in the 2 person comp you won't win.

Anything I Should Change So I Don’t Regret BIG Later

You'll always going to regret something later as tech component's prices usually go down. You should be building your PC for what you expect it to do, based on what you required task, budget, lifespan, etc.

  • +1

550 watts maybe abit low if you want to upgrade to a more powerful gpu later, i usually get minimum 650watt, also keeping a good headroom of power usage can lead to better thermals.

    • Already regretting this one. Should have spent another $12 more and got the 650w one….oh well…..

  • +1

    I like it

  • I'd be looking at the 2060, 2070 or 3060ti for the GPU.
The 1660 will struggle to get the most out of your 1440p monitor. You'd have to lower your settings a bit or play at 1080p for best performance.

    • The differences between 2060 and 1660S isn’t too much I think. 2070 on the other hand is much more different.

      • Question becomes if the 3600 can handle the 2070 GPU?

  • Any particular reason for going AMD, intel is much better value for this price range atm

    • Always a big fan of AMD so that’s why I went for it

      • Ah I see, that's fair enough

  • How much is the system priced at?

Very similar to my son's build back in July. 3300x, 1650 super, B450 mobo, LG 25" Ultrawide, Anne Pro 2 white.
It was Covid prices and there are much better deals now.

We have this mesh case from MSY, comes with 4 RGB fans with remote. The colours are great and there's a youtube review.

Probably would recommend RGB Ram, doesn't cost much more but adds to the aesthetics.Strip RGB lighting but ensure heads can connect to your mobo.
Probably want RGB strip lights along the back of your desk too. They are cheap from Kmart.

This cheap speaker is great! It has bluetooth, RGB, compact and adds to the aesthetics. Very handy for watching movie or listening to music from the bed or just giving the headphones a rest.

    Goodluck!

You will always regret but it's the best you can get for your budget at the time. Learning the skills is priceless though.

    • Yes, what is the total $ of your proposed build?

    • Yeah good idea. I will post my costing here this afternoon. How much I have a spent and what $$$ to be spend….

      • Don't need to inc peripherals. Only price of thesystem to compare.

        • Oh, in that case its:

CPU: $200 for 3300X and $300 for 3600 (Waiting for deals)

If buying 3600 and 1660S, total will be: $1022

  • with out dollar amounts and total cost/expected you posting on the wrong forums

  • How would 3300X/3600 handle 2060 or 2060S? Is there any major gaming differences between 1660S and 2060S?

As my partner's laptop has 1650 on it, if I want to gaming while away I can always borrow that one.
