  • Does anyone know how much an extra pair of the 3D sunglasses would cost?

    • +3

you should know that, u work at DSE!

    • Hey guy that works at Dicks, Do you know how long this last for? until sold out? I just put in a random date because I couldnt find a date.

  • I work at DSE, and this is a Clearance model know, as it is very old

    • +9

Maybe you mean old in terms of tech, but either way it's not that old. It's 2nd gen i7, has the 540M which is still in most mid-range laptops, USB 3.0, 3d vision built in (which hasn't really taken off but is great if you use it) and a bluray burner.
Hardly old tech and for under 1k it's a great buy that will still be relevant in 12months.

I bought the A660 version (1st gen i7)of this laptop (A660-07R) in march and it hasn't missed a step yet.

As someone who works at DSE, please inform people which store as so they can avoid receiving advice from you?

      • Actually, the 3d screen technology is quite old. I'm not sure if you realise that the glasses-free versions of 3d laptops are already on sale! ;)

Link them then. I have heard no such thing and no Nvidia poster that i follow have even spoken about it.
3D tablets have been developed but by people using hardware they aren't meant to tamper with.
Phones are easy enough to find in 3d such as the LG Optimus 3D.
But i know of no laptop?

        • @heywes,

You really should learn how to use google, champ:

That will save you an awful lot of embarrassment when you're inevitably wrong! :p

  • ,

  • really ugly if you've seen it in the flesh… metallic shiny contoured wrist rest is ugly as sin lol

    • You meant "You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." from Matthew 7:5 ?

      • +3

        i doubt he meant that.

  • +1

Crap resolution for a 15" with blu ray.

    • +5

it's a 3D screen. Try and find a 15" laptop with a 3d screen with 1080p for anywhere near this price.

  • Good deal. I like Toshiba products, you're paying for specs not something to make fashion statements. Snapped up an o2j few weeks ago but this looks execellent

    • -6

yeah but you are making a fashion statement with the metallic shiny wave-effect wrist rest. but for all the wrong reasons

  • This seems like a great deal to me, definitely not very old tech! Almost beats the price of a desktop PC with similar specs. Could get it as desktop replacement, would just swap that HDD for a SSD. And I wonder if it can run two external displays at once? Probably with HDMI and VGA it can, but I would prefer two digital (DVI/HDMI/DP) connections.

  • Has anyone tried Skyrim on a 1G 540M?

    • got this laptop & it plays well on medium settings. High graphics and it lags

    Porn.

    • +2

      In 3D.

    • +1

      Giggidy giggidy goo.

  • Pity we cannot upgrade the GPU & screen.

    • Exactly. With a full HD screen I would've ordered this already! Although then the price would be $300-500 more I guess. Not too worried about the GPU as I don't really play games.

      • +1

I'm not sure if any of you guys bagging out the resolution realise this, but IIRC once the 3d display kicks in the res automatically drops to 720p anyway.

Not to mention that on a tiny 15" screen it's unlikely that the human eye could discern a difference between 1080p & 720p resolutions at any sensible viewing distance! :)

        • The main difference for me is not the image quality in movies etc which would be difficult to discern, but screen real estate for programs. The pixels may be bigger but having half my screen covered in overlays on a 1366 x 768 screen isn't much fun ;[ As previously posted up on OzBargain (price is up by $20 but still pretty good imo) there's a laptop with comparable specs and a full HD screen (no 3D) for an also comparable price here: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

        • I don't think anyone is going to buy a 3d laptop for productivity, Mark; the entire point of the exercise would seem to be gaming & movies! ;)

        • Even for gaming, I play competitively and use a 3rd party voice chat client, which even on 1680x1050 uses a decent amount of space on the screen as an overlay :P Even default game HUDs often use a fair bit around the edges of the screen on their own and combining the two I wouldn't expect to be too great unless text was downsized to a difficult to read level :( However, certainly the people who aren't as stupidly fussy as me about screen resolution should find this quite a decent deal :)

        • MY EYES HURT on 1920 1080 on my 15inch laptop
          I REGRET IT.

Sure increase the DPI settings in windows, Doesnt work for some games have to manually disable . SADFACE.jpg

FHD on a 15inch is good for gaming and photoediting not for everything else 1600 is teh sweet spot

Don't get too tempted by the price and specs, I have a uk version of this which is pretty much identical , and i got it at heavily discounted price too thinking it was the deal of the century. on paper it should be great but in reality its quite poorly made and the idea doesn't really work, it was quite disapointing.
The battery life was appalling, less than 1 hour. and it makes more noise than most desktops ive had, the thing feels and sounds like a hair dryer , i have never seen a laptop generate so much heat and fan noise.even when just browsing the net, extremely distracting and not great for using on your lap or in bed. It is also full of toshiba bloatware, most of which is pretty useless like the face recongnition, usb charging when off doesnt work, the hard drive sensor is very irrating when you move, the web cam is terrible, and it really doesn't perform as good as it should. A thing to mention also is while the processor and graphics card seem good, when playing in 3d the performance takes quite a hit. your really not going to get great 3d gamming performance on a laptop and its not that good anyway on such a small screen. which kind of makes the thing a bit pointless. I plan on selling it soon and looking forward to going to a nice quicker and quieter desktop with a nice 24 inch screen.

I have a Toshiba A300/U01 and yeah i don't think id go toshiba again, the finger print scanner does not always work (ie windows wont prompt you to scan your finger at the login/lock screen every time). It gets VERY hot at times, and very noisy. And the battery life sucks.

    • +1

less than 1 hour? Oh that's terrible..
i cannot dream of such short battery life for one laptop…

      • Maybe I shall comment.. :D

I bought a similar laptop around April (900$ :D). Same specs minus the 3d. I think the model was 750/02R or something.. it had an R. Anyway it runs beautifully. I get 4 hours battery life on eco-mode and about 2-2.5 with full screen brigtness. Such a bargain, it runs cool (around 50 degree idle) and max is 70 under load. I dont mind the look of it but it is preference. Basically good deal if you want the 3d, otherwise there are cheaper I7s out there

UltraBook is going to be the main stream next year.

    • Most are either 11' or 13', though.

      • That's only for now. 15 inch will come along when there is a demand for it.

  • Can it be plug into a TV and still have 3D?

    • As long aa the TV in question is at least 120Hz.
Doesn't have to be 3D, just the required refresh rate. 60Hz per eye.
