PDELL20A

Pretty sure this is the lowest ever price for the XPS 15 9500. Ends today!

Great laptop, stellar battery life, RAM is upgradeable, NVME SSD is also upgradeable + you get an additional slot for another NVME SSD.

If you're happy to wait till Q1 next year, the XPS 15 will probably be one of the first laptops to receive the 11th Generation 'H' Intel Chips with Thunderbolt 4 (whether you really need either of these is debatable).

Riddled with quality control problem like every Dell xps model. Take that into consideration

QC problems are all fixed, holy shit this is cheap though
got mine for the same, but had to wait 3 months for cash back!

    • +2

Yeah right. Dell QC problems are never "fixed". I have been issued several Dell XPS models from work and they have all been garbage in terms of reliability and long term durability. If it wasn't the hardware (which it often was) it was driver problems.

As a test lift your XPS up by the corner while the screen is open and watch the chassis flex and your click pad trackpad active/stop working

      • Which manufacturer / laptop would you recommend instead?

        • I don't know they all seem to be crap. I had a Surface Book 2 15 which was reasonably good, now have the Surface Book 3 and it has been crap so far - random freezes, GPU disappearing, GPU heating up even when it is disabled in device manager, crap battery life. I also had a MacBook pro 16 for 2 weeks to test it out and it froze on me a bunch of time just doing basic work

i had a good experience with HP in the past, but that may have been luck.

As an alternative to the Surface Book 3 and this Dell I thought the HP Envy 2020 15 was going to be a good choice but HP does not seem to be serious about selling it in Australia - it is hardly available in the shops and there is only one overpriced config option on the HP website with crap specs for the price

I suppose just buy something with good warranty and don't spend too much

          • +1

@qvinto: I don't know man, If you've tried laptops from multiple manufacturers that seem to be working fine for the vast majority of people and none of them have worked for you, maybe the laptop isn't the problem.

            • @poppingtags: Maybe you don't really use your laptop in very demanding ways or are happy to tolerate obvious quality problems.

Read my other post here detailing the Dell problems I had and explain how the user is the problem in this case

              • @qvinto: I've used premium Dell, HP and even a refurbished Lenovo laptop for graphic intensive tasks, financial modelling, machine learning and virtualised app development. I have very little tolerance for any quality issues - but I've never had problems with any of these laptops. In fact, I've been constantly impressed with just how well they work - and for how long they last.

The Dells you've given as examples aren't from the XPS line nor are they from this generation. Precisions aren't 'XPS equivalents'.

                • @poppingtags: These precision models I mentioned use the exact same chassis as the XPS line and all other components except for the GPU chip; the precision lines use Quadro cards instead of GeForce. There are no other differences; they are very much XPS equivalents

                  • +1

@qvinto: Sorry my bad - you're right about the chasis being the same. That said, you're still complaining about laptops from previous generations, with a completely different chasis + internals to the model in the deal.

You mention that you've had good HP laptops, if you look at the HP deals there are just as many people complaining about issues there. The key is to get a laptop that can do what you need it to, with a solid warranty and then use if it you run into any issues.

I think we hear a vocal minority of people who do run into issues and weren't able to resolve it. If every laptop is as bad as people say they are, no one would be getting any work done anywhere.

        • There is no specific laptop manufacturer. They all pretty much come from the same factories in China, including Apple and the parts will be shared. Just do a Google search.

"Quanta, Compal, Winston, Inventec, Pegatron, Foxconn, and Flextronics make most of the laptops, netbooks, and tablets on the market. Even competing manufacturers may use the same parts. Quanta components are used in HP, Alienware, Apple etc."

If something fails it could be specific part from one of these or a multitude of others.

I have supported laptops from almost every major brand, including Apple, in the past and they all have issues, no matter what the fanbois say.

          • @shellshocked: Based on your support experience what brand would you recommend? or to be more specific, what 15" premium windows laptop would you recommend

I like the build quality of the surface book but it has some annoying CPU power throttling issues where the power gets stuck at 15W at times and performance suffers. When running well it can use up to 30W and performance is good. its not even a heat issues based on my temp monitoring, just some bios bug

      • I am interested in which generation and models you speak of, genuine interest because i have had 5x xps laptops (13s and 15s) between 2014-2018 and all are currently still functional without any problems.

I am considering getting the "new" XPS 15. Has QC deteriorated since 2018?

        • There's always at least one person in the comments who complains about the QC of any laptop regardless of the manufacturer.

Just checkout a few long term reviews. The new XPS 15 is widely regarded as one of the best 15 inch laptops around. There was a known QC issue with the trackpad being slightly wobbly, but that has been addressed now. Dell's warranty service is known to be pretty good too!

@poppingtags: True, but doesnt hurt to hear them out. This seems like a good price but still a fairly significant amount of money and I've been out of touch with xps line for the last couple of years.

Good to hear they have fixed the trackpad issue.

          • @poppingtags: Have you read the Dell XPS subreddits? there are so many posts on there complaining about quality issues.

        • I had a m3800 Precision (XPS equivalent from 2 gens back) with a 4k screen - the screen was replaced about 5 times in about a year due to flickering or white spots developing. The motherboard died randomly too. Also the trackpad did not work in the centre from brand new. You also could not use it on your lap as the chassis would flex so much that it would activate the click pad all the time. Also some of the screws holding the back cover loosened and fell out with minor use. Such a garbage machine, i really hated it. This cost my work close to $5k

Then I had a Dell Precision 5520 and 5540 (these are the previous gen XPS models). They would blue screen regularly, the "soft touch" coating started coming off around the edges after about 3 months (and would constantly be covered in finger prints). On the 5520 the left monitor hinge detached form the chassis after a few months (no drops or damage, i am very careful with my laptops) and the whole thing would flex when opening the screen. This was a common issue on other forums.

The whole experience was very frustrating

@qvinto: like, from everything you said, there has been issues with every company?
            Its expected.

As long as the warranty is there and they are easier with it (Dell is and so is surface and apple) there is no problem

The QC issue with the new dell 15 was the track pad, and it has been fixed, since there isn't anyone complaining about it since. TBH there isn't many more you can ask from these companies

I sold my SB2 for this, and have never looked back

            • @BaeSuzy: The reddit threads suggest the trackpad issue is not fixed. It seems it is just a bad design that relies too much on a small tolerance stack not realistic in their assembly process.

              • @qvinto: Dell has stated that anyone with the trackpad issue can return it under warranty.

                • @poppingtags: its a great laptop, 100% i have used and owned alot of different laptops, this outshines all of them. (not considering apple)

Enjoy!! its a stella price! but lol, it just means it will get even cheaper throough the years haha

I've had 4-5 XPS 13s down the years and never had a single problem. Nothing!

        • yeah they are good machines. every laptop has their issues, its like life, you do one mistake and no one remembers the good you have done.

People often forget this is a flagship laptop, and nothing comes close to what it can offer.

    • I heard RE: XPS17 teardown, there were components in there that are from brands never heard of.

      • Refer to my earlier post

  • too expensive for a laptop

    • +1

you will never understand until you actually use it. I' have used asus laptops most of my life, they are the best bang for buck and i agree.

But once work gave me an XPS 13 9300 for work, i instantly waited a sale for the 15'' for personal use.
The screen alone is worth every penny.
Honestly, the laptop is second to none.

      • -2

Where do you work? I would like to work there too just for the free XPS

      • Yes I've stopped buying laptops on spec and value alone, screen comes first. No regrets, screen quality significantly improves your daily uses.

        • preach

        • That's why a dedicated monitor is the way to go.

      • +1

I have used and provided support for the XPS line after the warranty expired. You might be the exception to the rule. My only advice to people buying this product is to get a long warranty if you can afford it, you may really regret it otherwise.

        • this is the same with all high end laptops

  • A 15.6" with no numpad. I gather that is because of the smaller bezels. I couldn't do it but others should be mindful.

    • -2

      Who even uses numpads anymore.

      • moi

      • people that use excel alot do

    • XPS is targeted at workers/productivity/professions and especially aesthetics!

  • Saw xps15 9th 9750 in outlet as refurb at $1599 a couple days ago.
I cannot justify the price difference.

My XPS 13 from 5 years ago, still runs well…

    • +1

My Dell Studio XPS 16 which is built like a tank. Weighs about as much.

With the exception of the battery still runs to this day. Easily a 10 year old laptop.
