    That is sad news.

    • +38

I guess the discount will be (wool)worth less soon?

      • From 21/10/20 - we’ll offer the following discounts: BWS Store eGift Cards 5%, BIG W Store eGift Cards 5%, Dan Murphy’s Store eGift Cards 5%, Cellarmasters Store eGift Cards 5%, Woolworths Store eGift Cards 4%, WISH eGift & Physical Cards 3%.

What's "Woolworths Store eGift Cards 4%" ? is it diff to WISH

        • +1

Woolworths Store eGift Cards - this only can use at WW store only.

WISH Card , can use at all stores - WW , big w , caltex , etc

          • @bbqwer: Oh like equiv of the old Coles-Myer gc

            Grabbed a 5 hundy :) Deed's done.

    • +2

At least I can still choose to give myself disco lights, streamers or dragonflies.

    • Probably worked out that all the orders on price errors e.g. Wine bundle deal was from gcs bought from cash rewards

    • +21

It is really good of Cashrewards to give us notice of this change before it happens. Unlike some banks, where you find out about their rate drop after it happens. At least we can now plan and stock up!

      • +1

        I'm surprised too.

  • +64

A negative bargain, do we count negative votes as a positive?

  • +24

This is the exact opposite of a bargain.

… but, good to know. thank you

    • +12

This is a bargain with a deadline as opposed to forever same price/discount

  • +7

    what about shop back?

    • The email says it will apply to most partners so we must be ending things

    • +1

Probably too busy to fight off negative PR from the data breach to dare to post another seemingly negative (but out of their control) update.

      • I guess I have to buy wow's gc from you again soon :D

  • +13

Anyone know the back story? Is woolworths doing this to all resellers (entertainment book, etc) or is cashrewards just squeezing some extra milage out of the cards?

    • +3

      prob became too mainstream

    • +2

Coles reduces their rate and cut out suppliers over the last few months.

      Dj’s also eliminating discounted giftcards

      • +16

Fair enough, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I would've thought selling discounted gift cards was a profitable business for companies - cheap source of cash + keeping all the unused/expired cards.

I guess low interest rates might mean that it's no longer viable for multiple players to take a hair-cut on the gift card gravy train along the way.

        • +2

Maybe this has something to do with the 2019 law that mandates longer expiry periods for gift cards. https://consumerlaw.gov.au/new-gift-card-laws

Gift cards don't expire as soon, so will be a liability for longer…? Not sure it explains why we're seeing this trend one year down the track though.

          • +3

@NitroJolt: Woolworths Group Gift Cards never expire. Coles still have 3 year validity.

Used to be 12-24 months across the board.

          • +2

            @NitroJolt:

            liability for longer

Nah - a quick glace of the woolworths annual report shows 16bn debt, of which only 250m is gift cards and loyalty schemes.

The most obvious way to curb the liability would be introduce an expiry date, rather than kill the discount.

        • +2

Fair enough, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

^ Ditto, and also all that effort and resources that went into the great Money and Rewards apps which mainly cater to the e-gift cards users. I wouldn't bother to open those apps if I wasn't using them to store e-gift cards. I would just scan my Rewards card and that's pretty much it.

          • @virhlpool:

and also all that effort and resources that went into the great Money and Rewards apps

Hopefully they'll put more effort into the Scan&Go app now…

            • @salmon123:

Hopefully they'll put more effort into the Scan&Go app now…

It doesn't save any money for the consumers though.

              • @virhlpool:

It doesn't save any money for the consumers though

I think they had 50% off when it launched. I guess they'll need to start offering more incentives to get any sort of momentum with that app, which is what I was getting at.

  • +1

Oh this is rather sad indeed :(

    • +5

Yep. These were great for fuel, especially because WW was usually the cheapest near me, and it stacked with 4c off receipts.

Personally, I prefer shopping at Coles and I've switched to an electric car, so it's not a big loss. I'll miss using them at Dan Murphy's the most, but I got to used to that when they removed cashback eligibility when gift cards were used (although they since brought that back).

      • +1

These were great for fuel, especially because WW was usually the cheapest near me, and it stacked with 4c off receipts.

        Not to mention Opal topups.

WW group sold off their fuel business. It's operated by another company now, even though they retain the WW branding and accept WW gift cards.

This could be a reason a reason for WW to reduce discounts on gift cards.

        • Well they could simply stop allowing EG to accept WW GC.

          • @tukanglistrik: There's probably contractual agreements that prevent it - along with accepting discount dockets, etc.

I mean what's to stop WW from saying "You can't use our branding on your petrol stations any more"?

  • Oh no

  • +21

we've had a good run boys and girls, thank you for all the discounts woolies

  • +9

    push me hard to coles!

    • +1

      Summer time sadness

    • +1

Coles did this very same thing first…Woolies is following.

  • +1

    time to stock up…

  • +2

    WTF!?

    • Does no one read forums before posting ?

      • +36

I must admit I check deals more often than forums.

        • I made this comment when it was a dupe Forum post as this has been posted a few times today in the Forums

          • +2

            @jimbobaus: There are Forums!?!?!?

(j/k… but no, rarely read them)

      • Generally not

      • Nope. Never read the forums myself.

  • What would be the alternative then? Where else can we buy WW giftcards?

    • Shopback?

      • Suncorp?

        • Yeah, 4% "only", IF they keep the agreement… I should probably buy a few hundred dollars while I can…

          • +1

@this is us: They've already got a banner on there saying it will drop to 3% on 19/10.
Doesn't mention any lower drops after that though but wouldn't be surprised.

          • @this is us: I've been buying woolworth caltex gift cards on suncorp for quite a while now, they were still at 5% and work in woolies.Although they are also dropping to 3% now

says in the list woolworths 5% off

    • They'll all be reducing the discount to 3%. Maybe they'll then have sporadic 5% discounts.

  • Thanks to OP for sharing this information for our last ditch effort to save a full 5%. However, seems the date of discount reduction in the heading Has to be corrected (20/10)?

  • +1

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • This is the comment i saw in my Suncorp rewards app. It doesn’t mention big w or Dan Murphy’s though

“ Effective 10am (AEST) Monday 19 October 2020, the Woolworths Group will reduce their eGift Card discounts. Woolworths and Caltex Woolworths eGift Cards will be reduced to 3% discount”

  • After 0%, it will be -5%, rewards will be rejected and deducted for whatever reason.

  • +1

Never used a Woollies eGift card before, forgive the noob question but how do they work?

    • +3

Free money. Buy a card through cashrewards and get 5% discount in cart at checkout. I.e $200 face value card costs $190

      • Thanks, but how does one scan an eGift card at the checkout?

        • +2

Choose gift card payment method, enter the card number and PIN manually or scan the barcode.

        • +11

Load the card into the Woolworths money app and you can scan the barcode, then enter the PIN.
It's confusing the first few times but easy once you get the hang of it.

        • Yes scan at checkout or punch in numbers online, can be used at big w, bws, dans etc.

      • how long do they last for?
can these cards be used Australia-wide?
        can balances be checked?
( can balances be used to pay? )

        • +2

          They don't have expiry date.
Can be used at all Woolies, Caltex-woolies, BWS, Dan Murphy etc. Online order ok too. You can load the card onto the Woolworths money app and it stores it there with updated balances for you. If you already have the app on your phone, when you click the email link of the gift card, it automatically adds it to the app for you. Pretty neat.

          Stacks with 4cent fuel vouchers.

Very easy to use. I've been doing it for years. Get some, you won't regret it.

          • -4

@Darkyre: Thanks for your reply :-)

            People spending $95 to get a $5 bonus :-D

…which is fine, if you were already going to spend that $95 !

            • +1

@whyisave: It's better than bank interest. Buy $1000 worth and take 2yrs to spend it and you are still in front.

            • +1

@whyisave: Yeah, we do spend that $95! It’s been one of the most consistent and lucrative bargains for a long time! More lucrative before some of the older hacks were closed off, but I will be getting my fix of cards before the finale!

            • +1

@whyisave: im a low spender and i do chalk up 95. doesnt have to spend all 95 at one go. its not a question of IF, its a question of WHEN eventually. $5 is in fact just a bonus.

  • Suncorp app
    Woolworths 4%
    Fuel 5%
    Liquor 5%

      • +1

No news yet whether Macquarie bank will follow suit.

        • +1

Well I assume Macquarie aren't going to pay 2% of your grocery bills themself.

    • The Suncorp app is saying that Woolies discount will be reduced to 3% from 19 October.

It's entirely possible that it will also then be reduced to 0% in November.

    • +1

You can use any of them at any of their stores. ie, liquor and fuel one still work at WW. At least currently…

    • +6

You can buy a Dan Murphy 5% card at Suncorp and that will work at woolies

  • +12

    Press F to pay respects.

  • Lets hope discount through Suncorp App will remain ?

    • +1

      Suncorp already reduced. And note:

'This decision applies to a wide range of partners advertising Woolworths Gift Cards and lies outside the control of Cashrewards.'

  • +2

Use suncorp 5%, get teh caltex wollies one, works at woolworths.

      • -1

        ah shit… this is sad

    • Forgive my stupidity in asking the same thing you said but I'm just checking, do the Caltex Woolies e-gift cards 100% work at Woolies ?

      • Yep. even works online as well. Ive been using it ever since the normal woolies went back to 4%

        • Thanks for the info, much appreciated

        • Besides Caltex one, I bought a BWS eGC @ Suncorp early this year. It is the same as a Wish eGC.

There is also a "Woolworths Liquor" eGC there, no sure if it is a Wish eGC.

  • +1

    sad, sad news.

op should update title with 'last days'

  • +29

No 5% = buying from Amazon.

Without cashback at Amazon, woolworths/big w was winning due to 5%. Now I've no reason to shop with woolworths/big w

    • +9

Exactly, this 5% was the only reason I didn't bother with the Amazon grocery deals…Not anymore!
