    • So fair! Thanks for the feedback :)

Picked up 1kg of Proud Mary from these gents via message, very happy with it. Pretty much next day it was at my door. Bit pricier compared to Inglewood, but got a bit tired of Spirit of Peace.

    • Glad to hear :)

Are these coffees shipped from the roaster or from the inventory held at Direct Coffee?

Ie. Am wondering about roast dates / freshness v ordering directly from the roaster. Thank you.

Hi there, we order these coffees once a week (after the Sunday deadline). It then comes to us - we don't have a stockpile of coffee sitting around!

Market Lane, Five Senses and Staple are all roasted to order (so in this case roasted on Monday). Proud Mary is a touch harder to describe, they have a rolling forecast system. So for us, this means that coffee is usually roasted on Friday or Monday. All coffee is then packed on Tuesday and shipped by Wednesday at the latest.

      Does that help?

My orders from Dircect Coffee have always been received less than a week from the roast date. Last order of AXIL was roasted on Monday, in my hands on Wednesday!

That's awesome that you have the Five Senses taster pack, with 4x 250g for only a small cost premium over buying a full kg! (Usually far more expensive to buy 4x 250g)

I wish more roasters would do this, so people can sample different styles before committing to 1kg of any particular one - I would be much much more likely to try out a new roaster if they offer such a pack, without charging a lot more for it (I mean, you're still buying 1kg of coffee, so the extra should just cover the cost of the bags, and volume pricing should still apply as if you were buying 1kg of any one coffee)! Nice one! :)

You should encourage more roasters to do this! :)

Was going to comment the same thing! :)

      • My wife largely drinks decaf so looking for something that plays nicely with milk for her. Anyone tried this one? Their decaf looks to be an SO, isn't it?

    • Awesome! Great to hear :)

Newbie here. Do you offer different grind options for Five Senses taster pack? Thanks

    • Hey there - welcome! Unfortunately the taster pack is sold as whole beans. Have you considered getting a grinder?

  • Can OP or anyone recommend a 5 senses blend best suited for an aeropress? Cheers.

Hi! Is it possible to delay roasting/shipping by a week and a half, or two? I have enough beans to last me until then, but don't want to miss out on trying these beans!

5 Senses - Dark Horse makes a killer French Press and cold brew!
Getting through Proud Mary - Angel Wings with a daily delicious v60 pour.

Am keen to get more once I run a bit lower on the beans (thanks for looking after me previously Tim!).

Also looking for recommendations for Aeropress… Hi Fidelity or Compton Road looking good… Maybe more Proud Mary… Or all the beans!!

    • Just wanted to get your advice for the 5 Senses coffee beans!

I have a french press and Barazta Encore.

How fine or coarse did you grind your beans? And how long did you brew for?

        Hey mate,

I use the same grinder :) setting #20 was the one for me. 17g to 250mL water (also did 15g to 250mL the first time and it was nice too).

I followed this recipe to make the French Press https://youtu.be/st571DYYTR8 (it's a bit extra, but it is quite tasty).

        • Sweet! Thanks for the recommendation. Will try the above when the beans arrive.

  • using breville barista coffee machine, what settings do people use for proud mary?

    • Depends on how the factory calibrated your grinder. I used to have to set my grinder to near the lowest setting, usually a 3 or 4, but sometimes right down to 1 or 2, in order to get proper syrupy extraction. I would not be able to choke the shot even at the finest setting, so I knew something must be wrong.
I took out the top half of the grinder to adjust it inside (as per manual instructions) and changed the internal setting from a 6 to a 3. Now on the external adjustment wheel, a setting of 3 chokes the shot, and around a 5-6 is the sweet spot for fresh coffee.
