ooh I love a good jigsaw.

Can you imagine the feeling if there was a piece missing at the end of all that.

From doing many large puzzles and framing:

With clementoni and ravensburger ranges, if you do indeed lose a piece(s), you can mail in for a replacement.

I think with clementoni, they send you the entire puzzle again as the stamp mold is the same, so you have to find the missing piece(s).

with other big brands, sometimes they ask for a picture of the surrounding pieces and they can send you the replacement.

The biggest puzzle I've framed with glass is a 6000 piece. I wouldn't recommend anything larger as the glass and frame become quite heavy.

The alternative is to stick the puzzle on a large board (thicker mdf) and paint the top with multiple layers of clear coating. I used a mixture of PVA and water, and around 5 coats. Then get that framed without the glass. You can also you epoxy if you have access to it to give it the glass look and seal. Framing and finishing costs way more than the puzzle itself.

Most if not all large format puzzles come in separate bags. You don't need a huge room to make, just the room to construct the final puzzle. Also it's technically cheating to make each bag separately, but chances of losing pieces are minimised. I've done a 6000 piece puzzle that came in 1 bag

Thanks for the tips! I'm almost done with my 13k clementoni puzzle :https://www.jigsawsdelivered.com.au/Clementoni/Art_-The_Masters/The_Creation_of_Man(13200pc)/Michelangelo/CLE_38004

..and have a single piece missing. I never thought to email them!

Great tip on the framing too!!!! The puzzles usually come with a cement to keep it together, though never thought to use a coat of PVA and water.
Got any pics of the results?
I thought glass would be crazy heavy (3m x 1.5m) so I was worried about framing it.

this is a panaramic 6000 piece with no glass.

With clementoni, there is a missing piece request service if you still have the barcode of the box.

        • Good job. Looks great. What's the approx weight of the framed piece?

          • @ihbh: the puzzle alone is around 3-3.5kg in weight.
then add the backing board and frame… probably another 5kg…

I think the total was well under 10kg, and that's without glass.

In comparison, I had another 6000 piece puzzle done with glass and had to use a much thicker frame to support it. That one came in at over 15kg

            • @squashedfrog: How do you hang it up (on the gyprock?)?

              • @ihbh: i use a professional framer who affixes the frame to the puzzle. between the frames is a hanging wire which hang on 2 spaced plaster screws.

The framer actually picked up the completed glued puzzle from me, framed, delivered and hung it up.

If you can find a stud, then use that. Plaster screws and/or ramset spring toggles can be rated at 10kg each.

Obviously if you cannot drill into your wall, you are going to find it difficult to hang.

Wow thanks for this tip! I just glass-framed one of my puzzles with the intention to 3M it to the wall. The glass frame was so heavy and I can’t put nails on the rental property so this PVA+ Water tip is great!

Can I ask How many parts PVA and water?

      • I think it was around 1 part PVA to 2 parts water, adjusting according to the thickness of the PVA. Because PVA dries clear, it doesn't really matter about the ratios just as long as you can work with it easily and avoid lumps and bubbles. I used a simple plastic painter's spatula to spread it around. wait a few hours add another coat and repeat until you are happy

I will only coat after I have stuck the puzzle down onto a backing board first. if you use thin backing board, be careful of curling as it dries so you may need to weigh it down.

after a few coats, you shouldn't be able to feel the puzzle edges anymore.

According to the listing in Costco…..This puzzle is ideal for those aged 8 years and over…I bet if I buy it, I may be able to finish when I am 80. Never done one over 1000

I respect anyone completing a jigsaw over 2k pieces
I can do a 1k in a week or so, but 2k took me a month

    Spare 3 minutes
youtube time lapse of 42k jigsaw

    • The dude aging before your eyes. Starts with short hair and finishes with…less short hair…or more…you know what I mean

  • I bought it. I'll probably keep it and am planning to do it. If it doesn't pan out I figure I can probably sell it unopened and get my money back. I didn't want to miss out as I've been looking for a large puzzle to do.
