Xiaomi want the middle men. They buy the product immediately, in bulk. Once money changes hands, its good for the base company. Xiaomi (all companies) need the return for the marketing, research and production of the product. Middlemen control a market because they have a good price, reputation, and they move the product.
Video cards- Nvidia will sell direct, their founder's edition. Its the most direct way to buy the card. Asus (one of many middlemen) will by the card and put their custom cooler on it, market it, and sell it for $20 more. Asus puts their marketing ontop of Nvidia's marketing and sell in volumes to their customers. Nvidia is happy, sells cards for a good price to asus, because they know they will sell. Risk is minimised, sales maximised.
Instead of thinking, wishing and hoping to find a distributor of cheap chinese goods (with no service or warranty), untaxed by australia and unprofited by the middlemen, learn more about the industry and take the risk in becoming a middleman for a unique product.

Also there is a difference between "Ripoff" and "Profit". Even grey market importer makes a profit with the exchange, although you think they could be "ripping you off" by making money. There is no free lunch. Call it what you will, people need to make some "money" for their living too.

You're facing a lot of criticism op, but I think the central idea has merit. Where you're going wrong is looking for an established group. I think it's a thing that if you want, you have to start it yourself.
Imagine if you got 10 or 20 similarly minded and motivated ozbargainers to each chip in 1000 bucks. You could use that to go over there, find discount sellers, make contacts, and acquire a bunch of inventory to send back to Australia for resale.
You'd be able to get your cheap prices, all members of the group would be able to get things at very cheap prices, while those outside the group would be left to pay the inflated prices that help fund the whole thing.

If it is a charity case, then OP spends their money go to China. Find price then tell everyone here is the break down of all my costs therefore this is the charity price. Finding someone else to do charity is a tough task to ask.
I've seen paperwork on importing. Container of stuff for a $2 shop might cost AUD$10k. Shipping is AUD$1k by sea, when you have to customs clear it is $300, if it sits on the dock because ABF wants to Xray is another $100 per day (3 days free but if it lands on Friday, you only get Sat + Sun and ABF don't work on weekends), truck transfer from wharf to warehouse another $600, GST is 10%. Then you need people to unload it, cost of warehousing, people to sell it. Your $10k just went to $15k. Don't forget you get breakage etc. You $10k of stuff just increase by 50%. Before it gets to retail, don't forget retail rents, people on shop floor etc.
Not saying it is a reason to buy stuff retail but I am saying it might seem like there is a mark up but then it disappeared into other places and feeds different people.
Well I was just throwing out numbers, it might need to be more than that. Depends on how clever/personable you are I guess. The main takeaway was that while the prices on the ground over there might be cheap, it takes a certain amount of seed capital to start the process of transporting it from there to here. Not hundreds or thousands of dollars, but tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands (mmm, yummy).
Even if those were once of costs, which they aren't, they still need to be recouped just to hit zero, even-steven.

That actually sounds pretty cheap to me. Have you been inside a shipping container? They. are. huge. You could probably fit 5000 regular sized postage satchels worth of goods inside one. To me all that sounds like the simple part. The hard part is managing all the people, coordinating all their wants with reality. Like OP, it's very common for people receiving their fare share to think they are getting a raw deal. Once they lose faith in the integrity of the system, they stop trying as hard, and become more open to corruption, and once that happens any gains made by coordinating as a group become lost.
yeah, and not to forget "warranty" - how do you deal with returns and all - in China, I would assume you goto the shop to get it fixed. Over here, the logistics of returning or reseller managed warranty - the cost just adds up.
If anyone bought a product from overseas and took it back to their home country, and it broke - s/he only has themselves to "blame", if you get it via a local distributor/reseller - people would go all salty, if the message was suck it up if it broke, as they were purchased from overseas and its the buyers problem…
