  • Haven't played any pokemon game ever, (except Pokemon Go for a couple of months) which game do you guys recommend as a 'must have' if any?

    • One of each Gen or since its a good price just get all 4

Sword and Shield are the core games for the switch, they have Pokemon gameplay like previous games. There's like 500+ Pokemon to catch and train. They've also received DLC which adds more content to the games.

Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are remakes of the first games released in the Gameboy but with Pokemon Go gameplay. The games only have the original 150 Pokemon. If you want more Pokemon Go then these ones would be better suited.

You can't go wrong with picking either. I'd lean more to Sword/Shield as there is much more to do in those games and they are what the gameplay for Pokemon is meant to be.

You don't need to purchase both versions, one is enough as you can trade with others online for the opposite versions Pokemon.

As a long time fan of the mainline series, I have to say that Sword and Shield were one of the more disappointing entries on release. There has been more content added since then and in a vacuum they aren't bad games. If you have a 3DS, Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon would be worth your time. If not, these will be fine but expect 3DS level graphics rather than Switch class, and egregious asset pop-in.

      • Ultra Sun/Moon are starting to become expensive now, it's over $100 to purchase Ultra Sun second hand ):

        • Wow, I knew they were much more compelling entries, but those prices are ridiculous. EB games does seem to still have stock, although it is also preowned.

@TeddyBear: Wish I knew why the prices went up, all the 3DS Pokemon games were quite cheap for ages but then out of nowhere became expensive a few months ago.

It's not very often that EB Games is the only one left with a reasonable price :/

            • @Megumin: Have a look at platinum, heart Gold and soul silver prices. Don't even mention gen 1,2 or 3 games - those are all over $200 with the original box.

            • @Megumin: discontinued platform games, 3DS recently stopped being manufactured this year, prices follow the news.

It also doesn't help that since the 3DS had such a long-running life, its first pokemon games are damn well near a decade old nearly.

The only 2 Pokemon games on Switch so far are Let's go and Sword/Shield. Let's Go could be a good starting point but it's gameplay is a simplified version of the mainseries with some similar mechanics to GO. You can also transfer Pokemon from GO to Let's Go and get Meltan Box's in Pokemon GO.

Sword and Shield are also good games and would be a decent entry point. If you want any 'Must have' games, if you have a DS or DS emulator get Pokemon Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver (the only game with 2 regions including Kanto) and Black/White 2. Those are considered the best Pokemon games. Pokemon Emerald on GBA also is fantastic, and LeafGreen (this has the same region as Let's Go which is Kanto).

IMO Let's Go is a pretty good starting point.

      • My son plays pokemon games .. has Sun and Moon (i think) do i need to get him both Shield and Sword or just one or the other?

        • Just one version, they are basically the same game with slight differences in the Pokemon you can catch, and characters you meet.

      • I agree that emulation is the best and most convenient way to get the "must have" titles. Even thermally contrained ultrabooks with integrated graphics are capable of emulating 3ds games and below well.

  • Amazing price on these

  • These are $50 on gumtree facebook… secondhand

These are $49 on Amazon… New

  • Does anyone that has played Mystery Dungeon DX think it is worth it at this price? I've got the original DS release so don't know what is different with the new release other than better graphics.

    • From reviews gameplay seems to be very similar to the originals. Perhaps it may be worth it for the updated bosses with their mega evolutions and the quality of life changes like being able to store items at a cache in town. Many dungeons are randomly generated so there might be some replayability value in that, however, level design might suffer. Some people found the original's gameplay to be a little repetitive, so I imagine that would extend to DX.

If you were a die hard fan of the original games and want to experience the same game again with a few additional Pokemon and quality of life changes, it would be worth it. Personally I'm going to pass on it since I had original DS games but never completed them.

Not sure even if this game worth $50. Pokemon is great IP for sure but the way pokemon sword/shield being polished is not reaching a standard for AAA games…

    • +1

That's what I said originally when it first came out. I bought it a few months later and I now have over 900 hours invested in the game. I regret not buying it on day 1 and listening to the anti-hype that the game recieved.

      • Mate, you got me now. Still sitting on the fence for micro sd upgrade or this. Hmm

        • Not trying to sway you either way… just from experience Nintendo titles seem to hover around the $60 mark when on "sale" whereas micro sd's do hit lows outside of prime and black friday sales ..

on another not i asked the question above, can i get away with buying either sword or shield for my son or does he need both?

          • +1

@scud70: One copy is enough, the only real difference between the two versions is which Pokemon are exclusive to each game but you can always trade online with other people to get the ones you're missing.

        • My friend just bought it last week (paid more than this) and regrets it. She says it not worth it because it’s way too easy and boring after playing 6.5 hours. She wished she bought another game instead. Different strokes for different folks i guess…

Pokemon Sword and Shield are both $47 now.

  • Keep in mind there's a Pokemom Sw/Sh "Deluxe" edition, which includes the DLC, going on sale November 6. Not sure whether the price for that might be better or worse than this plus the eShop DLC.

    • +1

Expansion pass is $45, the Deluxe edition is $124

      • Yep, ignore my comment then. Definitely a better deal to jump on this
