Gardenline Seaweed Concentrate 2L Bottle $9.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

1070

As part of Saturday's Special Buys, Aldi has 2 litre bottles of "Seaweed Concentrate" on sale for $9.99 each. While it's a safe assumption this is simply Seasol rebranded for Aldi, this is basically confirmed by the lids on these bottles, which are molded with Also… try our PowerFeed Fish Fertiliser on the top of them. PowerFeed is a trademark of Seasol International Pty Ltd… and is their fertiliser product which complements Seasol.

Given 600ml of Seasol at Woolworths on sale for $4.80 was considered a bargain, this stomps all over that given it works out to be 50c per 100ml, whereas the Woolworths deal was 80c per 100ml.

There was a comment in one of the past post that a landscaper who had used both, thought that this is more diluted than Seasol.

Doing some quick maths, this one makes up to 720L. The Seasol brand uses 20ml with 9L of water for Ferns, which means you would need about 1.5L of Seasol to make 720L of solution. FYI, a 1.2L Seasol is $10.98. So the Aldi one is a cheaper (although is only by a few dollars).
EDIT: Bunnings also sell 600ml for $4.85 so is cheaper to buy 2 of them ($9.70) than the 1.2L bottle.

      • +6

but perhaps their opinion of how concentrated the made-up product is, is also different?

        • +1

Yeah I think syba missed that point

    • +5

Not a landscaper but I agree with this. Bought one last time, and did a smell test back to back with Seasol.

The Seasol was far stronger is smell, while the Aldi one barely smelled of seaweed at all.

Recommend the bunnings home brand over this - much more comparable to seasol proper.

      • Why did the beach cry? Because the seaweed.

    • I used the Aldi stuff before. I agree it's not as potent as Seasol. The Aldi stuff is more light brown (Seasol is darker/ blacker) and foams quite a bit when mixed.

Nonetheless the price is quite good and I reckon it offers more or less the same value as Seasol.

      • What does potent mean excatly? I suspect you may be right but the one thing we know is that no-one on this site has any idea of the respective formulations or how much of what type of seaweed is used in any of the extract products.

      • Well, I got one last Saturday and just used it. I think this stuff is closer to Seasol (or possibly is the same stuff). It's largely still black in colour even when mixed. It still foams a little and I can barely smell the seaweed but I won't complain for the price.

        • Thanks. Will try to find some as I'm running out of the (Oz)bargain buy from Bunnings a while back. Previously the ALDI seaweed tonic had a milkier colour than Seasol and a significantly different odour. Might even do a seedling test of Seasol, Aldi and Bunnings Garden Basics a la the Seasol website video.

        • Found some at a nearby ALDI yesterday. Definitely a different formula to their offerings a few years ago and very similar to Seasol in colour as you say. Almost no smell from either.

    • -2

How is that productive to the forum when you're clearly wrong

    • +1

      That’s Lysol

  • -3

I usually go Bunnings, 2 x 2L for $13.50, or ~34c per 100ml. Assuming its all the same stuff.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/seasol-2-x-2l-hose-on-complete-g…

    • +4

These ready spray packs aren't concentrate tho. Not sure how how "concentrated" the aldi ones are or aren't as per some other comments here.

    • +4

The hose on stuff if diluted. Just look at the instructions for the concentrate bottles that say: "pour 500ml of this concentrate into an empty 2L hose on pack and then top up with 1.5L of water". So these 2L hose on packs only have equivalent of 500ml of concentrate in them.

      • +1

Ah, good call. I didn't clock the "concentrate" aspect.

Makes this a pretty solid deal. Especially since I've got the hose on packs already.

  • We have citrus in pots. Is seaweed best for them or what's better? To promote fruits of course

    • +4

Ideally you need specific citrus fertiliser to promote flowering and fruiting. Seaweed solution is essentially a tonic which promotes general health and root growth. Use both. Don't over-fertilise, esp in a pot.

    • -1

      Just avoid the Brunnings brand.

      • Just avoid the Brunnings brand.

        Why?

    • +3

For potted citrus. Little fertilising but often. I find osmocote plus organics works well.

    • +7

old bloke at work said pissing on your citrus is the best thing you can do for them. So I took a daily slash on my citrus and had bumper crops. Totally reccomend it!

      • +23

Rubbish! I tried that and all I ended up with is a lifetime ban from Coles.

      • +1

Old bloke is wrong. The best way to water plants with urine is to pee in an empty milk bottle and top up with water at a ratio 10:1 and pour that round the plants root line. have you seen how neat bitch urine burns the lawn?
Urine is a lost free fertiliser normally N:11 P:2 K:4 and doesn't smell unless left to sit and go stale with the fertiliser turning ammoniac.

    • Try 'Gyganic' fertiliser by Neutrog. Its specifically designed for citrus.

    • Black Marvel.

  • Don't know about this batch but the ADLI seaweed tonic used to smell different have a different (creamier) look to it compared with Seasol. Doubt if anyone has done tests to see how plants react to both. This seems a good price.

  • -3

Good old watered down seaweed solution

    • -1

How do you know that? Makes about the same amount.

      • -1

or so they claim. they could put any old number on there.

        • +1

You mean they'd deliberately mislead buyers? Makes no sense whatsoever. Educated guess - Flophunter knows sfa about the product. He certainly knows far less than the maker and ALDI.

          • @[Deactivated]: They could say to dilute it with 10 parts water or 15 parts, or 20 parts water and them claim that it makes a massive amount. While Seasol says to dilute with 5 parts water for example. Do you understand my point yet?

            • @nuttapillar: I understood your point from the start. Do you have the same response to every product you buy? The question remains - why would any reputable company attempt to mislead its customers? Cynicism at its worst.

    • I don’t have proof but having used both, seasol looks more concentrated. Maybe I’ll just not use the recommended dosage maybe I’ll double it

  • Has Bunnings price matched the real Seasol in past special buys?

    • -1

In general they don't price-match different products.

      • +2

        Price match, drop price.
        Tamato, tomato.

        • Ah, see what you mean now. Unlikely I think,

  • +3

Good luck finding this special buy item at your Aldi. Saturday Specials usually sells like hot cakes. My Aldi definitely has run out of these

    • Actually thought this was upcoming. Didn't see any in my local ALDI late yesterday.

    • +1

Checked out two Aldi’s in VIC today and all they had left of the gardening stuff was a few bags of top soil. Plenty of dishwashers, toilets and ovens though!

      • I was really keen on the oven, but wasn't able to find any stock in the west of Melbourne. Any left anywhere?

    • +1

Stock levels varies in stores. Plenty at my local.
Aldi in Vic has been reporting distribution problem with some Special Buys products.
That may explain comments about no stock seen there.

      • 20 left tonight

    • I got some yesterday, in Vic. Wasn't even looking for it, just happened to see it.

  • Trump injects this stuff - must be good!

  • -5

I have checked in 3 aldi storeyso far and its all gone now. Please rate it as out of stock now. Thanks

    • +9

There are more than 3 Aldi stores. Perhaps you area is sold out, but not others.

    • Plenty of stock at the two stores I went to today (in SA, Noarlunga and Seaford).

    • Plenty of stock yesterday at lunch when I went into a couple of Aldi store, to look for some bakeware.

No bakeware as the sale on them started on Wed. Doh.

  • so don't use this for sushi?

    • +2

No this ones fine to use on sushi, comes premixed with Soy and gives it that umami dark brown soy colour and fishy smell without the fish sauce.

      The Seasol I'd avoid.

  • +1

My previous experience with Aldi seaweed concentrated showed it made more foam if mixed with tap water so need to be careful not to get smelly afterward

    • Yep.

    • +1

I mixed with tap water today and it seemed fine. I even used my arm to mix some up in a bucket and while it did have an odour it's not hanging around.

      • Out of interest is it still milky brown when mixed or the same dark brown as Seasol?

        • A few weeks ago I found a half used bottle of Aldi seaweed concentrate from 2016 (manufacture date) and have started using it up. When diluted 3ml/1litre it gives a sort of brown but clear tea. What is noticeable is it does need a decent shake as the stuff as after resting the bottom is sludge like.

          • @philart: Yep that was the case with the previous ALDI concentrate I've used. I think they say all extract has an effective shelf life but whether that's been tested is questionable???

  • +7

Or just buy this at bunnings. Been using it for a year and it's alright. Don't think it's better than seasol though. But for the price, it's satisfactory for me.

  • Picked some up yesterday to use on some plants that we re-potted today. Will see how it goes.

  • +1

Urine has a lot of nutrients for plants and is free (don't do it directly on the plant). Just saying.

    • +1

Ha, you're right… Urine is nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium.

FYI- I was corrected here on OZB years ago that Seasol isn't a fertiliser but is soil improver.

Powerfeed (by Seasol) is their fertiliser. Powerfeed is Nitrogen (N) 12.0%. Phosphorus (P) 1.4%. Potassium (K) 7.0%

    • Peeing on the lemon tree is an old gardener's trick. Saves H2O at the same time unless you're a mellow yellow person.

  • +2

I picked up some Powerfeed from Bunnings yesterday. 600ml for $4.85. Same price for Seasol

I think the problem with trying to compare the Seasol with the Aldi stuff is trying to compare the two.

Even if Seasol did make it for Aldi, who is to say they are the same?

Aldi is most likely screwing Seasol for a lower price and if Seasol then diluted it to with 50% water who is really going to know, not the end consumer as there's no way to test the concentration at home.

Anyway, even if diluted with 50% water compared to Seasol it's still a useful product.

    • +1

Any reason why they'd lie about the recommended dilution rate?

      • +1

        To lower the cost.

Make 3L for the price of 2.

        • Any credible reason or do you think they do it across their product range - laundry, kitchen, oils, milk…..?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I can confirm a certain ice cream maker makes different brand ice cream for supermarket own brands, the formula/content are all slightly different. The wholesale price correlates to how good they taste.

I can't confirm what Aldi do. Some of Aldi's products are great, most are good and some are terrible. So I guess you have to try it on a case by case basis.

            • +1

@JimB: No kidding. "Home brands" were almost always a different formulation from a well-known manufacturer. Cereals, tinned foods, frozen veges etc, That wasn't what you were suggesting here.

              • @[Deactivated]: The vast majority of Aldi products are own brand.

                • +1

@JimB: Not that it has anything to do with your original comment but yes, they have their own brands. Products are made FOR Aldi, not BY them. Re-branded, Australian made, from manufacturers who also make well-known brand name products. Sometimes near enough to identical (eg their sous vide pies), sometimes a slightly different version (eg their "Tim Tams").

    • Aldi have lots of products made exactly the same like branded one, coming from same factory. I don't have knowledge of this but don't use ozbargain mindset to extrapolate, in many cases it will cost manufacturer the a lot more from doing something like diluting or mixing up different ingredient because the extra cost will not worth it, more than often they still make more profit by just sticking a different label on the same product and onselling to Aldi at lower price.

      • +3

Can confirm that I used to work for a manufacturer that used the exact same recipe for a product that Aldi sold.

  • +2

Is this the stuff that plants crave?

    • It's got nutrients!

      • +2

        you mean electrolytes! ;)

    • +1

      Plant crack apparently.

  • So is there any way of determining the “nutrients per ml” of these products so you can actually compare them objectively.

Or can you bung any amount of vaguely fishy stuff in a bottle and say it is “triply concentrated” and should make “up to” 650 L (or any random number) after dilution?

  • Is this good for currently fruiting trees like cherry and peach?

  • Has this undergone randomised trials and proofed to be as good as other brands?

  • I just got some palms in big pots. Would this Work as I was looking for done fertiliser to help them get some boost

  • are these used grow sea weed in a tank or something? genuine question

  • Any recommendations for fertiliser for my buffalo grass lawn?

    • +1

eco-prime emerald does a good job

  • +3

While this is a good price, I think the effects of Seasol are often overstated. Plus people often incorrectly think that it's a fertiliser.

  • +1

most aldi's in vic (South east) i find these at the front batch of special buys because nobody buys them.
i usually wait till they are discounted. $5 per ltr isnt really a bargain imo.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/garden-basics-2l-hose-on-seaweed…

Bunnings Sell Garden Basics 2ltr for <$5.

    • +1

      Bunnings isn't concentrated.

      • That one isn't but they also have a concentrate version for double the price.

  • While we discussing around health tonic, any recommendation on a better fertilizer for vege's and plants?
