[Refurb] Google Wi-Fi 3 Pack $251 + Shipping (Free Shipping with Kogan First) @ Kogan

70
TECH10

Been keeping an eye on this for a while, I wanted the original version due to the ethernet port (and price!).

I signed up for to the Kogan First trial so express shipping was free. (I added a $9 mask, otherwise it was charging me the $5 express fee)

The 1 year warranty is provided by Kogan, I believe these are essentially grey imports.

Don't forget your Cashrewards

Google have announced that Google Wifi is making a return, but the new version is only available in the US.

  • Couldn't get this to work on my HFC connection nomatter what I tried. Oh well.

    • NBN HFC or normal HFC?

I’ve got mine on Telstra cable, and it’s been fine

    • Which ISP are you with?

      • I was with IINET and now TPG.

        • +1

TPG use of VLAN 802.1q strikes again.

          • +1

@Twix: Yea, I got a good deal with TPG NBN, so used the savings to buy netgear orbi which I've been really happy with, coming from the Google WiFi.

            • @onlinepred: Yeah Orbi has great specs and supports VLAN 802.1q.

    • +3

I have this plugged directly to the black NBN HFC modem, no issues. Aussie Broadband is my provider. Maybe your ISP has to change some settings on their end?

      • +2

Yea the issue is with the stupid VLAN. It's such a basic device you can't even change VLAN.

        • Go to the voice section and you can add the vlan id there, no?

      • Me too, perfect

    • +4

I had this problem and solved it. The issue is that my HFC connection needed a VLAN setting to be set to "2" which was not configurable on the google wifi itself. In the end I put a spare ISP router (with wifi turned off) between my HFC modem and the google wifi, acting as a simple switch that selects the VLAN setting and passes the connection on to google wifi.

There is some stuff online about this e.g.
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2772184
      https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/Modems-and-Devices/HFC-and-G…
      https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/NBN-Installation/NBN-HFC-wit…

      • So you set the router as a router?

    • I was with Telstra Cable and switched to Aussie Broadband when moving to NBN (HFC). I've got my Telstra Smart Modem plugged into the NBN connection box and the Google Wifi running through the Telstra modem and it's all working fine.

      • Yea I didn't want to use any ISP modems due to privacy.

        • +1

          ??
You're aware these are manufactured by Google right, and you're aware of Google's position on Privacy?

          • @ESEMCE: Yes, you have to pick your poison. Do you want any random company in India accessing your modem/network directly AND all your data going to Google, or just your unencrypted data going to Google.

            • @onlinepred: What do you possibly think they can see just from your modem? Anything HTTPS/SSL/secured with a certificate is not possible for anyone in the middle to see apart from the actual address connecting to, without it being 100% obvious its occurring.

              • @deelaroo: Getting access to your modem as admin? How will you be able to tell?

      • +1

What are you using the Telstra modem for?

You can hook up the Google wifi straight to the NBN connection device with Aussie BB.

        • is that the same for Telstra NBN HFC?

          • +1

@87percent: Yeah Telstra is the same. The Telstra modem is only needed for the Telstra phone and 4G fail over.

        • To be honest, I kept the modem for specific devices that I'd like to keep on 5ghz, and to smooth over the transition without having to switch networks for some devices. Probably unnecessary but would reduce some load on the devices that I don't specifically need to monitor via Google Wifi.

          • @chet: Yeah you shouldn't need to do that. As long as it works :-)

        • can u use the google wifi in AP mode only

i have a pfsense router i just need wifi mesh

    • it works fine on my HFC. YOu just plug an ethernet cable from the Arris modem into the GWifi and Google does the rest. I'm just not sure how much I can trust google with my privacy.

  • Google are releasing the original wifi with a few improvements and cheaper too. Not sure on the Australian pricing. But it may be cheaper than these reconditioned units

Triple pack is US$199 so just doing currency conversion and adding GST (with virtually no Australia Tax) it'll come in at at least AU$299 if it's coming here at all.

      • For $50 more i'd rather an updated model and brand new and you aren't having to deal with Kogan

      • Yep, I figured they'll be between 299-349 AUD, and that's if/when they're released here. I've been needing better Wi-Fi for a long time, and with the amount of devices we have, I needed something "cheap ish" that would handle it, which I'm hoping this will do. Having an L shape house also means mesh should work well for us!

Also this was the best quote I found about the changes.

"The main differences in this Google Wifi re-release are that the Google “G” on top is engraved rather than printed and that it’s powered by a traditional DC barrel jack rather than USB-C"

        • +2

There's been some speed issues too with the most recent firmware update for the original google wifi. I mostly run cabled so havent noticed it as much, but it has really affected some people. I'd be a bit cautious with reconditioned stuff from Kogan too. Their warranty department sucks. Nothing is as bad a Graysonline reconditioned warranties though lol

          • @Sammyboy: Google are meant to have addressed the speed troubles on the new September firmware.

            • +1

@Twix: Theres also black friday sales just around the corner. So probably a good chance of the new units going on sale, or these old units discounted even further

      • the RRP for the first model was $399 so that would be a discount.

  • This or the TPLink Deco M5?

I found a review which directly compared the two and looks almost neck and neck. Google is slightly better on 5Ghz, Tplink slightly better on 2.4Ghz.
Both use the same design and offer similar speeds.
Both are configured using an app, both very similar "consumer friendly" approach/experience rather than getting into the traditional nuts and bolts
    .

    • Which ISP are you with?

      • ABB

        • Both are suitable with Aussie BB. Flip a coin :-)

    • +1

I'm inclined to think Google might keep the firmware patched for longer than TP-Link which might release a few patches across the next year then dump them.

      • Google are also more likely to have more issues requiring updates as they are new to the game and their apps and firmware are still new and pretty limited.

  • i would avoid Kogan as it is refurb product

As always for any standard sized house a single decent wireless access point is going to easily provide coverage throughout at a cheaper price. Actually have read testing showing better from a single proper AP. These are a gimmick.

    • Yep, you really do need to do some research to see what will work best for you.

In my case, I have an L shaped house with the router in the middle corner and I lose coverage on both ends, so this seemed to be the best solution.

The ethernet port is also a massive bonus for me as one of my machines is ethernet only.

  • Received mine today, set it up, all good.

Couple of scuff marks that wiped off, packaged terribly! And came with Samsung USB power points and generic USB C/Ethernet cables. Not the end of the world, and in contrast to what they state "All refurbished models are fully functional with genuine parts and the original battery" - but doesn't make a functional difference. Set it up, it's resolved my three main issues a) Coverage b)Speed c)Amount of devices it supports.
