Toyota 2020 Kluger (Old Design) or Toyota Kluger 2021 (The New Design)

Hi there,

I am a little mixed up on whether I should wait for the new design 2021 Kluger or should just buy the current old design Kluger 2020.

The new one comes in hybrid, but that’ll be outside of my budget as hybrid usually costs a arm and a leg.

So if you were to compare the 3.5 L petrol versions, is it worth waiting? Do you recon the old 2020 model prices will have a massive price drop? And how much more expensive you recon the difference will be from the old to the new Kluger.

Thanks heaps for your advise!

I thought Toyota hybrids were usually only $2k or $3k more than non hybrid? Not a huge amount of money if you are already buying a $50k+ vehicle.

  • Probably 4-6k more for new vs old model and add $2500 for hybrid

Unless it is a significant price drop, I will opt for the new design 2021. And I would wait until it is released to see it in real life (you might love the new look and performance or the other way around).

    What did mum say?

  • Risk taker for first gen hybrids

First gen??? Toyota has been doing this for a while mate, doubt they'll somehow stuff it up now in the kluger.

      • And they’ve been doing it with Lexus SUVs too so it’s not like they aren’t used to making large cars with hybrid.

        • First gen for any model will have its issues unless they are using from the same platform across another model.

Based on he price rise of the new Yaris and HiLux I suspect that getting the current model will be a lot cheaper.

If you are getting the current model, might as well get one 12 months old and save a heap of depreciation too.

  • Have we got any details/pics of the new model?

Was looking at a RAV4 hybrid and while I likes the Kluger better I was put off by it's fuel consumption. A hybrid Kluger might change my mind.

    Never mind, found this https://www.caradvice.com.au/849120/toyota-kluger-hybrid-con…

Funny, it has the same 2.5l engine that the RAV4 does but with higher power output?

    • What consumption figures did you see for the 3.5 V6? The AWD uses a lot more than the 2WD which is surprisingly economical.

      • Yeah can't remember now as it was a few weeks ago. But it was for the 3.5 Vs the 2.5 in Rav 4. Hopefully the release of the Kluger next year might force the price of the RAVs down a bit. :)

  • Surely the price of hybrid will be worth it in running costs and resale?

Looking at a US site the Hybrid Kluger (Highlander over there) will save you $1500 USD over 5 years over comparable non-hybrid models. Not sure what the Hybrid premium is though as prices haven't been released here yet.

Current run out prices on the 2019s are a steal. Check the build date though, some have been sitting around for a while. Would be a good point for further price negotiation.
Nothing new that impresses me with the 2021. Has been available for sale in the US for a while now. Check out Toyota Nation for owner feeback.

Get the 3.5 L V6 engine. It's like the only enjoyable engine that toyota produces because it's a workhorse. Imagine lugging around 3 tonnes, after filling your car up with junk and people, with a 2.5 litre engine. No ty.

I have that V6 engine in the LExus and even then I wish it had more power. 3.0 L Turbo petrol engine is my preferred setup but Toyota don't see the need in it, especially in Japan. Previously had a decked out Audi SQ5, but that car has so many defects. The windows keeps retracting and engine sensors keep failing. I pressured Audi into doing a full sweep of the car and then offloaded the stupid thing to a soccer mum.

    • Got the 3.5 V6 in both our cars (8y/o + 4y/o), had since new. Brilliant motor, reliable and cheap to service. They also have a great auto transmission, a real one that does not crap itself.

      • I would tend to agree with this.

While Toyota absolutely leads the world on hybrid tech… and I believe that the 2.5 four + electric would be fine in the large Highlander, you cant beat the overall simplicity and long term appeal of the V6.

I do get there's going to be a significant fuel penalty… ie. lets be realisitic. this is 2 ton 4wd so expect 10lt/100km plus in just about every occasion but I"m banking on the fact that petrol will be cheap for the next decade plus.

  • Does anyone here work for Toyota? When is the 2021 Kluger coming out? Thought it would be here by the end of the year, and we are pretty much at the end of the year now. I'm assuming its sometime next year then?
