High Sensitivity Cigarette Smoke Detector

Ozbs,

Wanna seek your advice on this because google is not being too helpful… :/

Would anyone know or could recommend any highly sensitive ciggy smoke detector in the market? i.e. alert even if smoke is not visible but smell/particles are.

I would like to detect if my unit gets smoke infiltration from neighbouring units… unsure from where at this point…

I need to provide proof to the building manager or OC that it is indeed happening and I would like it to be investigated.

I am highly sensitive to ciggy's smoke, causing numerous symptoms.. from blocked nose to crazy migraine..

Thanks

It is designed to alarm at the slight presence of cigarette or cigar smoke.

    Good luck in your crusade.

    • Had a checked this unit prior asking ozb, unit apparently only triggers if smoke exists. So doesn't server the purpose unfortunately :(

Be careful what you wish for. Cigarette smoke is the product of thermal combustion, creating a mix of fine and ultrafine particles along with the VOCs/PAHs etc. That's what makes up the 'smell'. If you set an alarm to trigger at the presence of ultrafine particles, you will find that when you sit down on the couch, walk past the monitor with cloths on, cook anything, turn on the gas heater (yes….gas), live within 50 meters of a road, you will trigger the alarm on the monitor.

      • btw imma ring this company tomorrow and confirm if this will work or not.

    Apartments are not for you.

Instead of getting everyone around you to behave to your expectations, you should buffer yourself with distance.

One is within your control, the other is not.

Common sense? Begone with you sir.

been living in a unit most of my life and enjoying it.

i am totally fine with occasional noise, music, etc2.

this however has affected my health and well being so much that i even feel sick even when i am inside my own home.

i am not asking too much am i?

based on your logic though, I too shouldn't get a house because i couldn't control the other people crashing their cars to my house/fence 10 times a day.

but seriously though, our strata is good in handling such issue, we are banned to smoke from balcony or risk getting fine if neighbouring unit is affected from the smoke. so yeah, same rule applies, it is just that I am guessing this is not coming from a balcony because i could see none is smoking everytime.

That would be provable damages well within your defined boundary with a direct cause attributable to an identifiable party.

Don't base things from your logic and call it mine.

You're spelling it out for yourself.

        • so where should i live, in a cave? can't browse ozb if i live that way :/

aside from my flaw logic, my point being, i am not asking for something impossible here, once identified, i will request strata to investigate, that's it.

but before accusing neighbours from something that they might not be doing, i would like to do my due diligence first, hence the sensor.

thanks for chipping in anyway :)

          • @Ch Rs: Good luck with the sensor.

Why on earth would someone crash their car into your house 10 times a day? What strange houses have you visited? I've never had a car crash into my house.

        • Strange things happen out in the suburbs

  • You might need to look at independent air monitoring. $$$?

Is where you live Strata / having registered House Rules?
If so, look for something like "A unit owner must not use their unit, or permit it to be used, in a way that causes a nuisance or substantial annoyance to an owner, occupier or user of another unit"

    • It's too vague.

OP can win that fight if he is persistent enough but there's always a next one, potentially because of their conduct on the first one.

        Well, exactly.
You could drive a truck through "substantial"

I've been an independent air quality professional for 14yrs and have never performed residential work due to the cost of:

      Labour
      Sampling media
      Laboratory expenses
      Reporting

    • yea we do have this, but because I might be too sensitive, I wanna make sure that it is the ciggy smoke that is causing me this.

I am 99% sure at this point but again, which unit. the one next to me, every time the symptoms appear, i step outside and i could smell none on the corridor.

      im hella confused…

tried contacting them as well but have not got much luck with it.

  • If you are really concerned and want something that may provide a slight-skerrick slithers of evidence against your neighbour, buy or hire one of these:

    https://tsi.com/products/aerosol-and-dust-monitors/dust-moni…

    I recommend the DRX 8530.

Hiring will save you capital, and will come with valid calibrations.

*Note, not an approved NSW EPA ambient air quality monitor and does not meet Australian Standards. You're looking at stupid $$$$ for a TEOM or BAM.

    • Oh, and don't hire one next week cos I'm going to hire it. Haha.

    • Thank will check this out.

I am no expert on this but what sort of reading do i expect from this kinda device?

      update: done deal lol

      • Outputs are in mg/m3. You can reference the readings to NEPM guidelines for ambient air quality. The OEH has a great website that has realtime (24hr rolling) PM concentrations in NSW, and they use a dustrak in some of the monitoring stations (super dodgy).

The trouble I see with your case is that there is no way in hell that smoking cigarettes is going to trigger the 24hr rolling NEPM PM average limits so there will be no leg to stand on in terms of 'poor air quality'.

The dustrak will provide a 'sniffing machine' that you can take around and make note of general PM levels and observations of the activities present in the area. E.g. get a 'background sample' and compare that to a 'smokers bluff' sample.

To be honest, it's probably best if you get an IR camera, point it at your apartment (ensure there are no bathrooms facing the camera), and film the one night. Look back at the footage and see if you can see anyone spark up. Then take it to strata.

        • jeeesuz gotta be honest this sound so serious haha

would IR give you visibility of the invisible smoke even at the slightest infiltration rate???

          • +1

@Ch Rs: Nah it wouldn't, you'd only see that someone was lighting one up, which if it was below your balcony would be a solid piece of evidence.
