Wi-Fi Router Suggestion

hi all, my parents wifi router died after 8 years of service so I'm looking for another one. I'm preferably looking for one with external antennas (rather then the ones with internal antennas that come free from ISPs) so they can get away with one router for their whole house (their house is 10m x 22m single storey if that makes a difference).

They are pensioners so budget is as little as possible but they are after something reliable that will last many years trouble free. Any suggestions?

P.s. they have NBN and NBNCo installed a little modem in their garage and they already have a lan cable from garage to the home. So all they are after is a wifi router rather then a full modem.

Use any router modem which is compatible with NBN, and extend wifi signal by buying wifi extender. Make sure you install at between moderm and furthest point where your signal getting lost and decreasing speed of NBN.

    I use this

it works great watching hd video on tv. Now it's cover even my garage where I set up my home theatre system with projector.

Consider a mesh system vs extenders. The Asus RT-AC66U is a good inexpensive router, I had the modem/router version (AC68U) for years and always solid but recently moved to Nest WiFi. Nest WiFi is great and super simple but perhaps prohibitive at $400? There are cheaper options though. Expect voice is of no interest to your folks.

    • iinet use VLAN 802.1q and Nest wifi doesn't support VLAN 802.1q.

  • Do they use the landline or mobile only to make calls?

    What ISP are they with?

  • @zonty: speed isn't really a problem for them, we just need coverage throughout the whole house. The wifi extender seems like a good idea but if there is a modem that can cover the whole house then I can save $50 on the extender.

@sini180: the asus looks promising. The cheapest I can find is $150. Is that a reasonable price?

@twix: No landline, just mobile. With iinet if it makes a difference. They so provide a free VoIP number but I've never invested the time to figure out how to use it.

    • Not all ISPs do this but for iinet you need to purchase a router that supports VLAN 802.1q.

A budget friendly router that supports VLAN 802.1q is the Mercusys Halo S12. S12 has 100Mbps ports and no app.

The next choice up is the Deco M5. M5 has Gig ports and is controlled with an app.
