Best NBN 100/40 Router

I'm planning on making the switch from Dodo 100/40 to Superloop.
Fortunately/Unfortunately, this means I'll also need to buy a new router to support this as I'm currently using the Dodo supplied one.

With there being so many options on the market, I'm just looking for overall performance, and something that will actually come with an Ethernet Port.

With that being said, would it even be in my best interest just to buy the recommended one from Superloop?

Thanks.

    How big is your place?

    • Not very big, definitely wouldn't have the need for a Wi-Fi extender lets say.

Wifi extenders are not much in use nowsday. Mesh is the current standard.

I don't think you will need a new router, unless you are not happy with the current one.

for a new one, this one is decent and not too expensive: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-ar…

I am currently on Superloop and using my old router which I got from Telstra.

    • They need to return the dodos router.

ive been using the Asus RT-AC86U for the past 5 years, hasn't missed a beat.

TP-Link Archer A9 or TP-Link deco M5 (for the price you may as well have a mesh)

Both can be setup easily from the mobile app. You can also manage your router remotely

I'd suggest the Archer AX50 or AX10 from TPLink.

I've been using the AX50 for a medium sized home and it's been great, especially if you have Wifi6 compatible devices. If you don't care about Wifi6 then the ASUS RT-AC86U is a solid choice too.

Netgear R7000, my D7000 still going strong after 4 years

    • I tell ya, in terms of price to performance.
This is probably the best sounding one in terms of reviews, looks, and performance.

Definitely split between this now and the TP-Link Archer A9 AC1900.
Obviously with the $100 price difference.

I have A9 too, Netgear 's coverage is slightly better.

I think Netgear also has more control in term of user access

        • Forgive me if this is a stupid question,
Would I also need a modem to go alongside this?

@JDNE: Depends what NBN technology do you use.

          • @JDNE: FTTN & FTTB = VDSL2 modem & router all in one or VDSL2 modem + router.
FTTP & HFC = NBN NTD + router.
FTTC = NBN NCD + router.

  • I went from an old TP Link 8980 To a LinkSys AC 1900 and had no improvement.

  • Look for a router that has the new WiFi 6 standard
BTW, it is only a little faster than WiFi 5

  • This is a specific modem for those on a long copper FTTN connection. I'm over a km from the node so I went on a search for a modem to maximize my sync connection speed.
I read all the articles about adapting a Telstra modem but that all seems a bit hard for me.

After a lot of looking around I found a couple of articles around a specific D-Link modem. Only this one model though.. none of the others. I don't know if its still sold as its a couple of years old now. Really basic user interface.

Its the DSL-2888A Python, AC1600 wifi… It uses a Chinese chipset, TriDuctor VSPM340.

To get it to max you sync speed you have to log into the D-Link website and upgrade the firmware to the latest one.

I used to connect at around 40 with both Netcomm and Netgear modems I've used in the past. Now with this D-Link I sync at 46.

The other downside is there is not VOIP with this modem. I hope this helps anyone who like me lost out in node lotto.

  • On Superloop 100/40 with a HFC connection I used a Netgear D6300.
    Don't laugh!
It might have been as old as the hills, and so ugly my wife calls it 'the Death Star'. And it's 'only' AC but it was fast enough to bend the needle; regularly 106-108 download and 36-38 upload.
We have a 2-storey house, and with nothing else connected, there were no dead spots anywhere. Everything connected and stayed connected.
I had mine since the ADSL days but used ones pop up for around $30 on websites.

  • Hi guys,

My new house has the Ubitquiti AP LR hung up on the ceiling and we quite happy with the coverage.
Im looking for any recommendations on a cheap reliable router since the Ubitquiti will be providing the WiFi. Currently with superloop HFC.

    Thanks,

    Mike.

      Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X (ER-X).

+1 for the ER-X. It’s a reliable bit of kit and handles 100/40 and faster easily.

    • How do you like Superloop?
      Think it's a good provider?

      • Superloop speed is great, getting the advertise speed of 100/20 on HFC. In terms of customer service, I think its abit hit and miss.

        • I'm with Future Broadband and they have very very good support folk. Due to their routed IP and need for a VLAN setting on some connections they seem to have a very good working knowledge of a wide variety of modems and routers as they help people who might need a hand with their equipment..

I was with Superloop some time ago and whilst it was a nightmare to get a hold of support (since corrected) once you did I found it to be knowledgeable and helpful. I did not have a modem issue so can't really comment about that but I would have to imagine it would be as good if not better then any other provider.

If you are struggling with your modem, I would ring your ISP first to see if they can help.. and then of course look to the web or the modem maker if that fails.

      • happy superloop customer here; so far so good!
