Best Coffee Beans in Melbourne?

Hi everyone, I've just bought a new coffee machine and have been experimenting with super market coffee. I've been told super market coffee is very average (if anything horrible) and I should stay clear of it. In saying this, you would probably guess my expectations are currently low so anything outside of the super market should satisfy me.

Now this is where I need help, googling Fresh Coffee Beans in Australia is just saturated with information and confusing.

Wanted a recommendation from a consumer's perspective on which coffee to buy, don't mind paying a little premium for what you would consider the 'best' roasted coffee beans. Shoot me what you would recommend and why?

I would prefer beans that were roasted here in Melbourne, but would consider anything you think is up to premium standard.

Appreciate the help Oz Community!

There are some really good coffee bean roasters in Mel. My fav are Axil, Market Lane and Impresso

"best" is subjective, but here's a few of my favourite roasters in Melbourne for milk based coffees:

    • Proud Mary
    • St Ali
    • Sensory Lab
    • Project281 (Not sure if they sell coffee beans online though)
    • Code Black
    • Truly spoilt for choice in Melbs! You can get most of these suggestions and expect to get high quality coffee beans (some for a more reasonable price than others).

seven seeds, inglewood, dukes, industry beans, st ali, market lane, proud mary

Agree with all the above comments. I love the seven seeds filter beans but lately we have been buying whatever is discounted eg. Inglewood, AXIL, Market Lane. Dukes and Small batch are also good coffee roasters. It all comes down to personal preference, whether you enjoy a floral, fruity or full bodied chocolatey taste

Can I ask - where do you get your filter beans at the moment? Is there an OzBargainer hack to get them cheaper? My preferred coffee shop does I think Market Lane and Maker 250g for $17 but wondering if there's a cheaper way to go.

      • $17 for 250g of Market Lane is a very good price (most of their filters are $18+). I tend to order ML once a month or so (on average) and have Aldi Columbia coffee the rest of the time (it’s decent enough if roasted recently). Between the $80/kg from ML and $13/kg from Aldi works out to be palatable for me

        • Thanks. Maybe it was $18? It was certainly sub $20. My issue is that I don't get through beans quickly - we're talking one 20g cup per weekday - so tend to not buy in bulk. I even freeze half of my 250g packets when I get them. Definitely need to try the Aldi stuff, particularly good when I feel like experimenting on grind size, pouring method etc.

      • I bought Inglewood filter beans when it was 50% off few weeks ago. Check Direct Coffee codes on OzB - they do some decent deals

        • Thanks, will keep an eye out!

  • Inglewood on here popular. My local Beanery in Brighton or C0ttle on Coventry in South Melbourne market area.

There was a similar discussion here two weeks ago:

You don't necessarily need to limit your purchase to Melbourne, but you will get fresher roasts.

No-one else can recommend a "best" for you, as no-one else has the same taste, likes, dislikes, preferences as you do. Try a lot of different coffees and keep a track of what you liked / disliked, and choose a favourite (while you continue to try new beans / roasts).

Aldi coffee beans are pretty good and much cheaper than the rest.

    • I second this and only buy Aldi beans now.

Aldi's Lazzio Medium Roast (by Melbourne-based Black Bag Roasters) won gold in the Golden Bean Competition 2018 (Chain/Franchise Filter Coffee category).

Silver Medal – Franchise/ Chain Milk Category – Lazzio Medium Roast
Silver Medal – Franchise/ Chain Espresso Category – Lazzio Medium Roast
Bronze Medal – Single Origin – Lazzio “Colombia”

Coles has since up-ed their game a bit but I haven't tried enough to review.

A lot of the coffee beans were mentioned in the deal from a few days ago. I just ordered Axil beans from them as I have their coffee in the city.

I buy Lavazza Qualita Pro from supernarket. Whole beans.
I love a good coffee but I also love value for money.
All the roasters listed above I'm sure are top quality and haved tried some myself. However they are expensive for $ per kg.

Supermarket you can pick up half price or 30% sales every now and then. It may not be super fresh but as long as you go whole beans it's still good quality taste.

    But taste is all subjective.

First, as others have mentioned, taste is subjective. My two favourites are
    St Ali - Wide Awake
Veneziano - Elevate (Previously known as Estate) - Veneziano are part of the Black Bag Roasters, who roast the Aldi beans.

Try reading this article they have good recommendations https://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/food-and-drink/artic…

There are so many options… You really have to try a few 250g bags and find the one you like. You can start checking the recent deals on OzBargain and read the comments. I've recently bought from Adore and AIRJO and was not disappointed. I will be buying more AIRJO soon…

  • Thank you all. I decided to give Inglewood a try as it came up as a recommendation quite a bit. They currently have a 40% discount so decided to pull the trigger on x2 of 1kg bags as they give free postage above $50.00. For those interested I used the code provided in link below. Again, thank you all for the info and wish me luck in my 'best' Coffee endeavour.
