Sydney to Lord Howe Island [Oct 4 to Early December] from $1092 Return on Qantas @ Beat That Flight

150

In some good news for tourism, Lord Howe Island is opening again for tourism after 6 months!

NSW Health today (Sep 28) repealed a Public Health Order that had restricted travel from the Australian mainland to Lord Howe Island during the Coronavirus pandemic.

So I've been doing a search this evening, but didn't really know Lord Howe Island prices. Turns out pre-covid, even months in advance, paying upwards of $1500 was often the norm!

So I'm pleased to say there are certainly tickets available for far less than that. I've indicated the cheapest dates below, in price order, currently available. There are plenty more dates, but all the others I found were over $1500.

Flights are also available from Port Macquarie, but I haven't had time to do a proper look, but have seen at least some from $1441 return.

      1) you can't fly to the USA at present and some people still want to travel / holiday and 2) as per the linked articles, the normal price has often been well over $1500 in the past. It's a single airline route flown on a Dash-8 with 36 passengers max per plane. It's never been a cheap holiday, but this is cheaper than normal.

That's the order that was repealed today (see linked article in description).

To be fair, it’s always been one of the most expensive routes to fly and looking at historical prices this isn’t a bad deal.

But I get you point. Nobody should be paying these sorts of prices for domestic travel, it’s ridiculous

    • Not sure why you're making the Ferrari vs Toyota Camry argument here…

  • -6

The price is ridiculously expensive, I'd rather travel to Adelaide or something

    • +3

      Good. You'd fit in there

  • +6

$1092 is a bargain for LHI. The reason its always been expensive is that qantas are the only ones allowed to fly there and therefore have a monopoly on prices.

1092 return is a bargin for lord howe island.

Anyone else who states otherwise has no idea of pre covid flight costs.

Always wanted to go but air fares have always been high.

For this price i would love to go but alas im a filthy victorian :)

Btw… comment on go to Adelaide……?? Maybe google lord howe, it looks amazing.

  • Almost had a fit seeing this heading after booking flights to Ballina 30mins ago (use $450 QFF flight credit from amex deal). Would much rather go to Lord Howe but at these prices i'll happily pass until i can work some other means to squeeze value into it.

    • +2

      Don't look at the normal $1500+ prices then…. ;)

Another way to do it is to use Qantas points if you have enough - arguably one of the best uses of points compared to the cost of the regular flight, if you're looking for a way to 'squeeze value' out of your points.

      • Yes thanks mate, the latter is what i'm thinking. Given broader international travel seems off the cards for a while yet i should probably start planning that and sussing out accommodation options.

        • Somerset apartments would be my choice… combined with 16% off at cheaptickets.com (prices in US dollars but still a saving there.. use a card like 28 degrees which saves on currency conversion fees. Wifey and I were going to go in Jan this year but covid changed it all..

$1092 return keeps the riff raff out. Put the price up even higher I say

  • Great! Super expensive flight with super expensive hotels and restaurants for a nice destination but with heaps of hype..
Thanks, but I will save the money for when the borders will re open.

      Enjoy your trip to Bali

      • No thanks. I've been there but didn't enjoy at all.

          Enjoy Phuket

          • @[Deactivated]: You got me wrong…not that type of tourist.

            Enjoy being ripped off.

Got better and cheaper alternative than hyped touristic australian locations.

            Good luck.

            • @ets27: enjoy your trip to the Gold coast

  • Hotels are super expensive, make sure you book hotels before booking flights!

  • These are usually good value redemptions for Classic Rewards (if you can ever find one!)
