Godaddy Not Honoring Domain Transfer Quote

I couldn't find pricing on the Godaddy site, so decided to ask via chat.

A bit of a wait to get through, but when I did get through, the rep was quite helpful, and pricing was better than expected.

I asked to make sure it was AUD and not US, yes it was. Includes GST etc etc.

All my questions resolved, and even took the time to give the rep good rating (when it popped up).

I then go to do the transfer, and the pricing was considerably higher.

I phoned this time, to find out how to get the quoted pricing to appear. The phone rep said the chat rep quoted incorrectly.

I have the chat transcript, and it clearly has the pricing information, and confirmation that is was AUD & inclusive of GST.

Is it reasonable for me to expect Godaddy to honor the pricing that they offered?

  • How much are we talking?

Can't be more than few dollars surely?

    • About $17 cheaper, and there was an extra year included for transferring in (which is an additional $40).

There are plenty of reason online why you shouldn't go with godaddy. They pull you in with seemingly cheap prices but then either upsell you on every little feature or try and trick you into upgrades (or just jack prices up after the first year)

I've shifted my domains to Google Domains (or VentraIP for .au ones) Both have easy to use systems and the service at Ventra is awesome (and local based company)

My domains cost me like an extra $1-$2 a year.

        Well worth it.

        • GoDaddy has been fine with us, but we only have personal domains and don’t need any extras.

  • Is it reasonable for me to expect Godaddy to honor the pricing that they offered?

    Yes.

But the real question is will they, and what can you do if they don't?

    • Exactly. The TIO dont cover this.

And Fair Trading will cost more than the saving to enact.

And I am thinking about the original chat rep. If there are no repercussions for them, telling people favorable things is going to boost there customer satisfaction.

godaddy is a bad company, but didn't you see the transfer price before you paid using credit card/paypal? You should only take chat bot quote with a grain of salt, but you should always check yourself the price you are actually paying before confirming payment at the checkout page.

  • I thought people will be thinking of transferring out because they are generally more expensive.

Are you talking about this page - https://au.godaddy.com/domains/domain-transfer ?
And the misunderstanding as to whether 9.95 is AUD or USD?
If only one domain is involved the difference is just over $4. Not worth pursuing, IMO.
OK, saw your comment on the amount difference. Still not worth pursuing IMO, quite possible it is a genuine mistake by the rep.

I am guessing you haven't actually gone ahead, just hoping for them to honour what was in the chat.

  • F**K Go Daddy. S##ty and slimy company. Recently found out that Go Daddy sells data to other companies which makes it easier for bots to swipe up your domains.

Louis Rossmann recently talked about this.

  • Stay away from them.
Godaddy.com CEO Bob Parsons is a trophy hunter and tried everything to get away with it.

    • Now that, actually, is a reason to look elsewhere.

    • Bob Parsons has not been the GoDaddy CEO since 2011.

Chances are that when you had a chat with Godaddy the operator was based in USA, and the person had no idea of the difference between AUD and USD. To the yanks the world starts and ends at their borders.
Indeed, when I lived there and said I was from Australia the OP said I spoke very good English!
