At Home Hair Cutting

Ok so it has been a number of weeks since hairdressers and barbers have been forced to shut in Victoria under Lockdown Stage 4 and it seems even if we get past Step 2 of the lockdown roadmap, we won't be seeing anything really opening up till nearly end of October. I don't think I can wait another 4 weeks so decided to maybe invest some $ in a pair of hair clippers and scissors and do it myself. FYI: Male, straight Asian hair, usually sides clipped number 2 then scissors up top to shorten. Can get someone to help as well.

Any recommendations on hair clippers from those that are DIY'ing cutting their own hair would be great!

Poll Question:
Would the Ozbargain community wait till Hairdressers and Barbers open up hopefully in the next 4-5 weeks or would you just DIY?

Got a spouse/room mate? (Much easier than doing your own.)

    Would recommend a cordless one.

Male? Female? Golden locks? Bald? Perm? Combover? Manbun? Fringe? Bearded? Dye? Buzz cut? Makes a difference.

    Wahl from Shaver Shop.

  • A month means your hair will grow 1.5 cm during that time. I'd say wait if you aren't too fussed. You have bought a kit so you are a bit fussed. I'd say cut it with the longest length all over and wait it out.

  • I do my own but it will never pass as a proper haircut. If you just want to tidy up it works for me. I've got the Wahl cordless waterproof ones.

I'm essentially the same as OP as far as demographics go.

Got the older model of this a while ago and just put one comb on (started at 4, moved down to 3) and cut everything the same length. If you did want the top to be a different length, you'll either need help or to put a band of sorts around your head to guide yourself.

  • I hadn't visited a barber for more than 2 years now. I got a Remington clipper for $25 from Target and my wife cuts my hair, saves at least $15 per cut and I use that money for taking her to dinner outs. win-win situation :D

  • Grow it out. Buy some leave in conditioner and add some oil after, if it's too dry. Use a bit of gel if you need some control over the day. You'll smell so pretty with all those creams and stuff in your hair.

I haven't been to a barber for 15 years. I give myself a zero cut every 3 or 4 months. It grows back faster at the back so I get someone to trim the rats tail when it appears, if I can be bothered.

  • Mum was a hairdresser and used to cut my hair at home. I never came away without losing blood.
