Tangerine Telecom NEW 500/1000GB Home Wireless Plans ($69/ $89.90)

232

I was browsing Tangerine's site last night looking for a cheaper NBN service for a friend of mine when I came across this gem. Uses the entire Optus 3/4G networks with no speed restrictions so it's a great alternative to NBN Skymuster or ADSL in regional areas or areas yet to receive NBN.

The listed prices are only for the first 6 months after which it goes up by $10.

  • Can it be used as a SIM card only plan?

    • Yes BYO is available! when you scroll down it gives you the choice of 2 modems or BYO

      • -1

Does it include calls and sms? If so, is it unlimited?

        • No calls/sms - data only

        • you can just use something like whatsapp if needed, but no its a data only service

  • +2

If you're only after 500gb and are no byo modem you're better off with Optus X flybuys promo.
Also despite being cheaper the B818 is the better modem of the two choices.

  • Is it prepaid, no excess data or what? Looked at the CS but nothing about going over.

    • +2

Its a postpaid service (no credit check) and when data allowance is exceeded the service is barred till the 1st day of the next billing period

      • I'm pretty sold on them for this reason, it appears it's not going to be full optus 4g speeds but I suppose you get what you pay for!

        • Is it not full 4G? That's disappointing!

          • +5

@tychiang82: The Home Wireless Broadband is full Optus 4G Plus Network.

No throttling or speed restrictions. Just as fast as you can get on Optus coverage in your area.

            Enjoy all.

  • +1

Im with them on HFC; amazing customer support and tech staff.

Never once tried to "blame the NBN" for outages, just advised theyd flagged my account for an outage, and a tech will look at it within the hour (he lives a street away :p).

Not planning on jumping ship unless significant money makes me.

  • How does the speed compare to NBN? They seem to studiously avoid giving speed figures on the Tangerine website.

    • Its mobile so its variable but based on Optus themselves they give a range of 2Mbps to 40Mbps but from my own use of an optus 4G service it should average 21-80Mbps. The NBN evening speeds figures are really only an ACCC requirement as it relates to NBN services

    • 4g tends to have higher ping if that's important to you.
4g speeds a very variable depending on line of sight to towers, congestion and also carrier aggregation.
I average 70mps down, 40mbps during peak and I probably max out at 150mpbs.
There are no speed guarantees with 4g.

4g Optus? lol dont even touch

    • Area dependant. I can get better speed on 4G than the maximum FTTN NBN can ever offer.

    • Yeah, keep my spectrum clear please.

I like my fast speeds :p

  • Worst company. Im mid swapping nbn from exetel to tangerine. They messed up big time. Ordered 12 aug for sept 4th swap over. Still no internet today 16 days later. They keep blaming exetel for not releasing my number. Exetel has given me written evidence they released the number to them when tangerine finally asked on sept 10. I have spent countless hours on the phone. Customer support constantly lies or is just organisationally incompetent of which i have documented 9 counts so far. It was a simple swap of isp for a connected service. The deal sounds good but i cant work from home, cant homeschool AND NO NETFLIX AHHHH. AVOID ROTTEN TANGERINES!

    • What does your rant have to do with a mobile broadband plan on a bargain website?

      • Ahhhh its the same company. Just my warning to fellow community members.

    • I’m in the same boat as you. FTTP was a straight swap but I’m sitting here with no internet at home.

      • When I first set up there was a 2 days delay as well, from AussieBB to Superloop is 15 mins down time

        • Mine was an existing service, so 15 minutes is what I was expecting.

    • +2

As a follow up, called LAUNTEL, 4 minutes later I had internet again. Stuff tangerine. LAUNTEL 4 minutes to connect, TANGERINE 16 days after the 3 weeks notification of the change, still no internet.

Chiming in as I am having a lot of problem with Tangerine tech support. Even during activation/ setup they gave me the wrong account details. I haven been with them for 1 month, and already planning to change. Not worth the hassle.

  • This is really good to know. I use more then 500G that Optus have and need to have something like this available should my FTTN go bad again like it did some time ago. Long distance to node and very old copper. At least I have a viable alternative.

  • How long does it take for delivery of the SIM in Sydney?

  • My TPG contract is about to expire.
I’m on HFC for the NBN.
Can anyone recommend a better service in my area 4051?

    • superloop great service on hfc in the brisbane area

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/566192 use the random referral link for a code

      • I keep getting dropouts on tpg.
I also want to use my Tenda MW6 instead of the providers modem, which I have to with tpg.

        • yep superloop is BYO router, hfc you will obviously have the nbn modem. Simply setup the router as dynamic ip and you're connected

        • Tangerine run on TPG for NBN, not sure about this. So Tangerine experience maybe be identical to TPG.

    • +1

Tangerine, or MATE, or anyone on the VOCUS network.
In all the other cities the vocus network is almost a swearword, but in Brisbane, it's REALLY good.

Solid 20-40ms pings to literally anywhere in the country, Only once have I dropped below my 'promised evening speed', and I've only had 2 outages of less than an hour, in well over 18 months.

  • Can the OP or store rep confirm this SIM plan can be used as a "Mobile" broadband where it will work on a pocket wifi or USB dongle?

    • It can, one of the hardware options is even a hotspot if you choose not to BYO

      • Thanks

  • If you were going to use in place of skymuster; would you have to install a satellite/antenna on your roof for your modem

  • Thanks OP. I have been looking into both Tangerine and Optus for a wireless broadband as NBN is giving me the sh*ts. Strange thing is that Optus says I can't get it at my address, but Tangerine says I can. I am currently with Optus on my mobile plan and get speeds of up to 80 Mbps on my phone at home. The Optus rep could not explain why my mobile works but the home internet would not… Is it not the same network? It's a better deal than the Tangerine offering when you take into account the FlyBuys promo, wondering if I can get the modem shipped to an alternate address and get it working at home?

    • +1

Yeah it will work, the Optus sales rep may be thinking of the old coverage limited HWBB offer which is now superseded. Tangerine should ship it to your address

      • Thanks for the info, you're probably right. I was also thinking of getting the Tangerine SIM and using it in a recent model smartphone as a wireless hotspot. I asked the Tangerine chat crew, but they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. Could that possibly work do you think?

I'm trying to order the Optus deal now but finding the same issue. I'm about to move to a new property that is only a few hundred metres from the Optus mast. I have checked 4G speed on my iPhone X at the new property. 150Mbps down / 30 Mbps up so very good signal. Optus site says 4G Home Internet unavailable, Tangerine Telecom site says it is available. The Optus deal is the better deal as the Huawei modem works out cheaper and it's a very good 4G modem from what I've read. I've tried multiple addresses to try and get passed the first hurdle on the Optus site but it seems it's not available anywhere. They always try and push you on to their NBN or broadband plan instead. I was hoping if I could get passed the fist hurdle of the "Check Address" step then I could put in my real delivery address thereafter.

        The struggle is real…..

        We're transferring you now.

You: Cannot order 4G Home Internet

Sorry, our wait times are longer than expected.
Please feel free to send any additional detail and we'll be with you shortly.

        You:
I am trying to order 4G Home Internet for the property I am about to move into. I have been to the property and checked Optus 4G signal and it is good. The mast is only a few hundred metres away. When I enter the address on the order page it says it is not available. In fact, when you enter any address it always says it's not available.

        You:
I have also looked at Tangerine Telecom who offer 4G Home Internet via the Optus network. On their page it says the service is available and quite rightly shows that there is good 4G signal in the area. I can order 4G Home Internet (on Optus) via Tangerine Telecom so why can I not order 4G Home Internet directly from Optus?

You are now connected to Nico in our Sales Team who is looking into your request & will reply soon.

Nico: To find the best solution for you, I'm going to ask you a few questions. Are you an existing customer with Optus at the moment?
        You: Existing
Nico: Thanks - Can you please now complete the following ID form
Nico: Thanks for that information. I'll just be a few moments to pull up your account.

You: I want to order the service now to my address at XX XXXXXX XXXXX, XXXXX, XXX XXXX. I will be moving it 6 XX XXXXXX XXXXX, XXXX XXX XXXX in a couple of weeks.
Nico: I see there is no 4G broadband new technology available at your address currently.
You: Have you looked at my images I attached above?
Nico: Yes, but i see the technology is not available at your address.
You: Well it must be if another provider can offer the technology via the Optus 4G Plus service available at the location. Maybe your computer is wrong?
You: And when I checked with my iPhone X on Optus 4G there was very fast service available

Nico: But I have another plan for you, where you can just get the plan, no modem need.

We have $119 optus one plan, where you can get massive 500 GB data.

And the plan will be month to month with no lockin contract.

Plus you’ll have your own dedicated Optus One expert with a unique number to call or SMS any time, so you are personally taken care every step of the way. It’s the ultimate Optus experience.

As an Optus One customer you will benefit from Network Priority. This means your service gets higher priority and you will experience faster download speeds on the Optus 4G Network during periods of high demand.
        Nico

Just you will be activating it and you can data share between the numbers and devices.

You: I am not interested in another plan. From what I read Optus 4G Home Internet is supposed to operated at full 4G speeds and not be capped. This is the plan that I want.

And it is $75/month. Not $119

Nico: Sorry, but the service is not available at your address currently.
You: Well please answer my question. Why is the service available through an Optus reseller and not Optus directly?
Nico: As we are from online sales tem, we don't have much information about it, you can call to 133937.
You: I would prefer to e-mail so I can send the screenshots and explain my issue in detail. Can you please provide me with an e-mail address where my query will be answered?
Nico: We don't have email option currently, however you can call to them.Y
You: Is there a direct number I can call where I can speak directly to a supervisor or technical specialist?
You: Without the need to having to explain the situation many times over and be transferred to multiple people

Nico: As this is not my area of expertise so I am going to transfer you to an expert in this area for assistance. They'll have the notes on our discussion so you don't have to repeat yourself.

You're connected to Luca, who is looking into your request and will respond shortly.

You: Hi Luca, Nico was unable to answer my query so I hope you can.
Luca Please allow me a minute to read through your previous conversation.
        You: Ok
Luca: Sorry it's taking longer than normal for us to get back to you. We'll respond shortly.

        Matthew, sorry for the confusion.

Could you please be more specific about your query?

I want to order the 4G Home Internet 500GB with modem package. The Optus website says the service is unavailable at the address. However, I can order the same service through a reseller, Tangerine Telecom, and it is available. The house is only a few hundred metres from the Optus 4G mast. I have tested with my iPhone X and the signal is good. 150Mbps down / 25 Mbps up. So there service is very much available. I don't want to order through the reseller. I want to order through Optus direct as I am an existing customer and I want to take advantage of the recent 25,000 bonus flybuys promotion I was e-mailed recently.

Luca: Thank you for the clarification. I completely understand your query here.

Please be informed that you will get the flybuy points only if you sign up through the below website since it is a promotional offer from Flybuy and Optus.
        Luca

        https://offer.optus.com.au/fixed/dnav/4g-home-internet/flybu…
        Info

Yes, I have clicked that link but the Optus website still tells me it's unavailable when it obviously is. I cannot sign up when it tells me it's unavailable unless you can provide me with an alternative setup link. I get this response from your link.

        Thank you Matthew

        Luca:

In this case, I would suggest you to please call our voice team on #1300933198 during the business hours.

They will help you in placing the order along with the flybuy points offers.
You: Will they be able to assist me? Is there a more direct number I can call? I don't want to have to explain this situation a million more times
Luca:Yes Matthew, I do understand your concern here and our voice team will definitely help you directly.

Yep, I got the same BS the first time I talked with them about it. I'm with Optus and get speeds upwards of 80 Mbps with 4G on my phone, but they told me mobile broadband was unavailable at my address… So, I put in the address of my rental property (which apparently CAN get it according to their map) so I could proceed with the purchase but got it sent to my own house. Works a treat. And they're idiots.

          • @TheFunkySalsa: Haha, yeah. The big selling point of the 4G Home Internet service is that you can take it with you when you leave. So the area their system thinks you live in is completely irrelevant.

  • +1

I have been having issues with ABB DHCP server with my Asus Router .
Switched over from ABB to Tangerine a few weeks back and I am so happy with the service .
On NBN HFC 50/20 Mbps plan now and the connection is pretty solid . No dropouts .

  • Anyone looking to order this via Optus directly please see my comment above. It seems, despite advertised, Optus are trying their hardest not to honour this offer.

    • No idea why they're telling us the mobile broadband doesn't work in certain places when it's clear it does. My Optus modem is sitting in my lounge room pulling down 4K video without a hitch over the 4G network… Bizarre.

      • +1

Following on from my internet conversation, I telephoned Optus to ask why their system thought the service was unavailable at the new address. I got transferred a total of 6 times, on multiple times to the same department, until I finally got through to "4G technical" where they at least understood what I was trying to say. The guy was saying they do a drive by once the mast is up and running in the area and thats how they generate a map of where they think the service will be available. I guess they don't drive down every street when doing this mapping.

I stated I had visited the property which is only 400m line of sight from the mast and I recorded 150Mbps down and 25Mbps up. However he was unable to override the system so I said fine, I'll sign up by Tangerine Telecom who of course use the Optus 4G service.

I found someone selling the Huawei B818 modem on marketplace and have ordered the sim card only from Tangerine Telecom. Hopefully its all smooth sailing from here on in. I can't see why it wouldn't be.

        • Thanks for sharing all this matt-e and TheFunkySalsa.

Your comments above helped a great deal when I assisted a non-tech savvy relative to get connected through the Optus deal.

We had to order it using another relative’s address to get around these stupid restrictions but everything is installed and has been working well so far.

I hope you got it all working too matt-e!

        • How did you go?

          • +1

@GangGang: Internet service is all good for me on Tangerine Telecom. I get around 100Mbps down at 8Mbps up with the modem just sat on a desk in the study. I did buy some additional antennas for it but haven't bothered to connect them up yet as the speed is always pretty good. I also tried a Woolworths sim card in it which is Telstra and that was very good too.

            • @matt-e: Did you byo modem or purchase one on tangerines website?

              • @GangGang: I bought the Huawei B818 modem (same as Tangerine’s website) off someone on Facebook marketplace. Had barely been used.

    • Gosh. I thought I was the only person going through this with the address. I am about to purchase tangerine or spintel. I was hoping to go with a telstra company as I've tested it at my property with a boost simcard. I haven't tried optus yet but I will give it a go.

  • My NBN plan is about to expire, how long does it take to switch?

  • They're out of stock of sims and have been since Feb. So annoying.
