I think it looks a little bit odd, but I think many new cars do. I think it’s the trend these days they design cars looks so they grow on you.
Nissan aren't really the go-to for pretty design. Especially not their awful interiors. But this makes homage to previous Z cars and looking to compete with Supra.
When I saw the new GTR for the first time I thought it was butt-ugly.
But then after awhile of seeing pictures of it, it became “normal” looking and people seem to have accepted it.
So in a way the looks grew on you.
New Supra is the same I think. Looks butt-ugly but in time maybe…
So do I, I've seen better concepts that better captured the retro styling of the original. This one looks good from the side but the headlights and the rear don't work for me.
I have more interest in the new Hyundai Tucson to be honest.
Yes but that is in reality.
You have to look at cars like this in magazine / fantasy / video-game world.
I have a hard time understanding people who buy “Mustang” or “Porsche” in real-life.
But you can look at cars in a magazine and think oh that looks nice and sporty.
My first impression… it looks like a BRZ.
I mean for one, it looks nothing like a BRZ….
@plmko: The upcoming version dude.
Looks like porche suv
nissan will be gone before this getting built
Basically a 350z coupe with round edges removed.
Yes I think it has to look like that in a way otherwise it would be betraying the Z.
I mean, the new Supra is nice, but holy (fropanity) batman, this blows that car out of the park. Always been a fan of the Nissan Z cars, and this is no exception. But twin turbo? I like the fact that Z cars have, for the most part, been naturally aspirated.
And I wouldn't really call it a "boomer" car, maybe more aimed at the Gen X. It was the car that boomers were driving and that Gen X remember as a kid and thinking, "when I grow up, I'm going to own a Z…"
I think V6 Twin-turbo sounds like rear-wheel drive GTR.
Yeah, I get the want for 9,438,230,148 horsepower in a 2 door sports coupe, but there is just something about the throaty growl of NA engine instead of the whistley nature of forced induction cars.
A friend has a 370Z with an intake and exhaust kit on it and it sounds awesome. That's the sound I want from my Z.
New Z probably will get reasonable horsepower.
I think GTR has 500-600 HP which is dangerous way too much IMO for a car on the road. Maybe new Z will get 300-400 HP.
I think they go turbo for better fuel economy rating.
If someone asked to ride in a tuned 1000 HP car from 1990 or something I would politely decline. (And think it is a death trap)
It was the car that boomers were driving and that Gen X remember as a kid and thinking, "when I grow up, I'm going to own a Z…"
Kind of confused what you mean here, but I once saw a person driving 350Z or 370Z, I asked about the car and he said it was a sports car for gentlemen (meaning older men) and that rear-quarter blind spot is huge.
a sports car for gentlemen (meaning older men)
You do realise that Gen X'rs are now getting into their late 40's and early 50's, yeah? Gen X are at that point where their kids are now at uni or are young adults and they have spare cash laying about. Boomers seem to want big arse saloon cars and expensive Euro trashwagons to show the younger generations how they are spending the inheritance money. Bad backs, bad knees, slower reflexes and poor eyesight don't fit with these retro throw backs and they are totally aimed at the newer breed of cashed up, more time to have toys and more disposable income of Gen X owners…
So Gen X ≠ Boomers got it.
I got the word boomers from online thought it just meant “older men” or “older out-of-date people”.
What comes before X? W? So Gen W is boomers.
What comes before X? W? So Gen W is boomers.
I think it goes like this: [dont know whats before baby boomers] > baby boomers > boomers > x > y > z > millennial
@Zachary: I believe it was the silent generation before baby boomers and boomers is just an abbreviation of baby boomers, not a separate generation. Also Millenials are before gen Z I think.
Also Millenials are before gen Z I think.
I was told anyone under 30 was one and that was the newest.
[dont know whats before baby boomers]
I do it’s Gen U, then Gen V (baby boomers), Gen W (boomers), X, Y, Z, and A (Millenial).
That makes more sense than mixing words and letters around.
Depends on how it's priced and how much return I get on it from parking it in the Westpac corporate parking lot.
You mean if it is collectors item. I think it is just another normal sports car.
Electric is the future 😷
I kind of agree here… I would own that new electric Ford Mustang Mach-E over this new Z car… 1,400hp, 800lbft of torque and the whine of an Imperial Tie Fighter…
Mustang Mach-E looks weird as well.. but maybe subjective, and looks may grow on you like other new cars.
Why the Mustang badge though? That's what I dont get. Just call it a Mach-E. But one thing it isn't, is it most definitely is not a "Mustang". A 4 door SUV??
This is what the Mach-E should have been if it was going to take the "Mustang" name. More like an oversized, wide body Focus.
@pegaxs: Hey that looks like the rally version of the same car.
But you would be chopping people in half and taking their legs off with all those wings.
@thebadmachine: Well, if a Ducati V4R can have wings on it, so can my Mach-E 1400 :D
Ahh the sound of a Tie Fighter, made from mating an Elephant with a screeching car.
Befitting really, because the Ford Mustang Mach E is a 2 tonne land elephant that will be screeching around a neighborhood school pick up near you.
Good choice.
I take it that you didn’t watch the video. 1,400hp and 800lbft of torque does not make for a land elephant.
And apparently the sound it makes is an artificially generated sound that was a co-creation with T-Pain, so that probably means it was just the sound of Tesla fan bois whining and put through an auto-tune machine
And apparently the sound it makes is an artificially generated sound that was a co-creation with T-Pain, so that probably means it was just the sound of Tesla fan bois whining and put through an auto-tune machine
Ah, thought maybe it was supercharger whine or tranny whine or both..
Not when cost of entry is $100K+
How are "LED headlights" an innovate feature?
You can get them at AliExpress for $30…
A trailer that mostly highlights useless cosmetic features of the car and I finally realized the Z is for Zoomer
Please vote boomer then thanks.
Done. It's basically a "2kool4school" car.
There's a massive difference between LED DRL (daytime running lights) or LED lightbulbs and Full LED headlights. It's not cutting edge per se as it's now available on most luxury cars and even my folks' Peugeot 308, but it's more than aliexpress cheapo kits
Quite nice, V6TT with a 6 speed, 2 piece drilled rotors with 6pot calipers, all LCD screen cluster, nice clean design inside and out.
All depends on price, I'm expecting will be north of $80K
Yes reading it like in a magazine makes it sound nice. Thanks for listing the things so I can read it.
as a car guy I am keen to see more as I may be replacing my mx5 nd1 before 2023. But hey Nissan you need to fix the square grille.
And the tail looks like something they got out of the old 180sx parts bin…
I agree looks out of place.
It should have been an evolution of 370Z rear (which was an evolution of 350Z rear).
They're making it reminiscent of both the Z32 and the S30. The two Z icons.
@Speckled Jim: I find it odd when companies make statements like
“Classic looks with bold modern styling”
Classic and modern mixed makes for confusion.
I think with the Z Proto, looking at it from the back and front makes it look like 2 different cars.
@Speckled Jim: The Z32 styling cues are the worse parts of this IMO.
Rear looks ok to me. But yeah its fine but not better
it would be hard to beat the Miata in fun to drive
Yes that's for sure but I dislike its body roll quite a alot. The seating is not good for my waist as well as I am 188 tall…
Thicker anti-roll bar(s) is a cheap fix if that's your only criticism of the car's dynamics.
Finding a lower seat mount is probably trickier. Might need new seat(s)?
@Speckled Jim: Very helpful advise, should have looked into a sway bar and new seat earlier. Any recommendation on sway bar?
Very cool, would strongly consider buying one if it was not $60k.
Looks better than the new supra at least. Not a very high bar though.
Bar that front grill (that rectangle is ugly) that looks like a pretty nice step up from the 370z IMO.
Interior looks modern(er) to!
Absolutely love this. It inspired me to get a job and start saving
The front and back, although both look fine, but for some reason it doesn't look like they are of the same car!
Yes I agree.
Thing is the tail looks sort of like the 240z and the z32 as well.
However saying this, what other planet can you get a 300kW 3.0 twin turbo v6 from the Q50S with a 6 speed manual in rwd???
There's literally no competition at that price or at any price?
The price is also going to be $60-$70k so good luck saving.
I can live with the tail and nose not looking 100% to my liking. I'm sure that stuff can be cured aftermarket.
However also 2 seat sports cars even with a liftback are fundamentally quite literally relegated to a 2nd car and if you can afford a $65k 2nd car then you're doing well.
I'm sure that stuff can be cured aftermarket.
Might not need to.
Many of the comments online reflect our dissatisfaction with the details. I'm sure Nissan would take them into consideration.
I've also decided I don't like the vertical door handles with the bits scooped out of the rear haunches.
Why didn't they use horizontal handles if they wanted to evoke the S30/Z32? They could even make them flush and have them pop out.
I think the 350 370z had those vertical handles.
My opinion is that everyone has their own tastes and youre never going to find a car that perfectly suits your design and mechanical criteria…. unless you get very lucky.
I can tell you that there are things in ferraris mclarens and even koenigeggs paganis that i dont like.
However when Nissan get the 'fundamentals' correct under the skin and the styling is close enough then what do you expect.
This car is closer to what I like than say the A90 and the GT86 etc.
Otherwise we can go back to our daily drives which is corollas camrys rav4s etc/
2022 Nissan Z revealed: 298kW turbo V6, manual gearbox for new sports coupe, here in 2022
https://www.drive.com.au/news/2022-nissan-z-revealed-298kw-t…
Now, would be good if they pull a introductory offer like what Toyota did with the Yaris GR!
Looks like they've taken some stylings from Tesla..
Pity it's not going to be as quick..
/ducks
Now, would be good if they pull a introductory offer like what Toyota did with the Yaris GR!
That was only done for homologation. They lost money doing it
This car is more in Supra territory when you look at the size and power. I like the ass on it, front is pretty conservative imo
As a consumer, I can only wish…
Toyota could have done more to pay tribute to the Supra… either do it properly, or don't bother…
Good old days Skyline, Supra, RX-7, NSX… Then there were WRX and Evo… followed by Celica, Civic, Integra, SX200, MR2.. And the MX5…
Tbh, the more and more I look at the supra, I think it's great. I do think they should have had a manual option, but the auto is fine.
I'll cop hate for this. But I think I will switch to the A90 after getting bored with my GR Yaris
@HerpinDerp: Yes. It iz not a bad car, nor bad looking car…
Just not much Toyota in it… let's forget about Supra.
Dat ass with the 300ZX lights.
Very interesting styling. It looks both old and new at the same time. Nice homage.
Design is not very cohesive. Back and Front look like of completely different cars (and are not necessarily bad looking at individually). Otherwise happy that it's being offered in manual!
It looks like they had a week to come up with a design and spent 6 days on the rear and then on the 7th day, they just said “(fropanity) it, just slap a newish 370Z front on it and call it done…”
Yep, they've tried to incorporate styling cues from too many generations of Z cars. They should've just stuck with doing an updated 240Z.
The back kinda looks like the Mustang
It has nice mirrors…
shoulda made it electric. Who wants to buy a petrol car in 2022.
0.7 per cent
"Electric car sales in Australia accounted for a mere 0.7 per cent of the overall market in 2020, a drop in the ocean compared to 10 per cent in both the UK and European Union in 2020."
I'm not good at maths but its sounds like 99.3 percent of Australians so only a small majority in reality.
Manfacturers do well to avoid 99.3% of potential buyers.
If this comes out in the claimed spec at indicated prices (sub 70k) it will be a good performance buy. But I have a really, really hard time convincing myself that will be the case considering the spec sheet blows the Supra out of the water from an enthusiast perspective, and the supra is 96k drive away in base trim. I suspect it'll be well north of 80k, which at the moment sadly pushes it out my price range, but still, cool and glad they're doing it.
Well it'll be hot property for least 18 months and so $80k is probably on the money.
The car is supposedly $35k in base trim usd.
They have an S sport trim and T touring trim that bumps it to $45k for both trims.
I expect they wont bother with a base trim.
To me a BMW Z4 isnt of the same thing as a 'real' Supra so this 400z is "real" to me. Plus manual. Not quite as authentic as a real Nissan sports car.
It will be very tempting if they can be aggressive on pricing with $65-$70k in the driveway, as it will undercut cars like the Supra but also tempt hot-hatch buyers to spend a little bit more to get something much more unique (and not based on their cheaper siblings).
I have a feeling it would be closer to $80k though, but then at this price, more choices open up. Cars like BMW 4 series, Merc C class, Audi A5s etc an even though they are not direct competitors, their entry-level (and underpowered) cars can be had from around $80k and badge/branding might be more than enough.
… tempt hot-hatch buyers to spend a little bit more to get something much more unique (and not based on their cheaper siblings).
Maybe not based on a cheaper model but you can be sure this'll be on the FM platform which is now 20 years old so not really a bonus, just another body on an aging platform that'll probably be it's last hurrah.
I don't think it will be $70k, at least initially. The 370Z is around the $65k - $67k mark I believe so it's won't be cheaper than this. Add in current supply shortages and always high demand for these niche models at launch and they have no reason to price it cheap. MSRP may well be $70k but I think we'll see them selling for closer to $80k for the first 12 - 18 months.
yep cars like this and the Mustang have the 'rwd manual performance' market sewn up
i wouldnt compare them to anything else and certainly not hatches and lukewarm euro barges
$75k buys you a Mercedes C200 whatever… and further this comparison is null because a Golf R whatever is actually a useful car given it can swallow four people + luggage

i'm ok with this
Car looks awesome and its about time time we see some Neo Retro Sports styling happening in the car world. This styling trend is very popular in motorcycles at the moment. Just look at the Jimny sales which went nuts with their modern retro design.
Pricing wise. If its between the Mustang 5.0l and the Supra it should do well. But being still based off the old platform it would be nice to see a stripped down performance bargain to undercut the Mustang.
I though about this and I would be ok with even an n/a ie. non turbo VR30DE and the 6 spd.
I would think really 0-100 in 6 secs or so would be fine but I dont think Nissan wants to make a sub $50k version!
I took delivery of a Z Proto yesterday. Ordered a manual but ended up with an auto. I originally missed out on an allocation altogether but was able to get this one because of a cancellation. Beautiful car. Unfortunately has a 2000km run-in period where you're meant to keep it below 4k rpm. It's going to take me forever to get to 2000km's but it still goes pretty fast even up to 4k rpm though I've only driven it in traffic. No proper drives yet.
1200 orders so far

Looks cool. Not for me though.
