If anyone is seriously considering a Netgear switch but is confused by the different series on offer:

A summary table on the differences between Netgear SOHO series (200, 300, 600) and Business series (100, 500).

I think Netgear may have upgraded the 300 series to have limited lifetime warranty (warranty expires 5 years after product is declared end-of-life) since the 2017 forum message, but you should do your own due diligence instead of relying on second hand info on OzB.

    • 200 series carries Ltd lifetime wty too… waiting for the gs116e-200 to drop below $120

Edit: 8port 200 series is different from the 16port. Maybe better to say all metal enclosures in the low end range have at least Ltd lifetime wty?

This web page from 2016 may be of interest too. Comparison of 3 unmanaged 8-port GB switches: TP-Link TL-SG108, Netgear GS108 and Netgear GS308 with photos of PCBs!

    • Info probably outdated after 4 years of hardware revisions.
    • The 2016 GS108 has no electrolytic capacitors! This alone is worth the premium over the other two.

I think the caps will be in the power brick. Note warranty for the brick is NOT lifetime but 2 or 3 years. Sneaky!

      • The power supply is exactly the same as the one with the caps and 12V adapter is easy to find.

  • Can I power a GS105PE off this ?

    • +2

The GS308E doesn't have any PoE ports on it, so you can't power any other devices with it.

  • My 5 port GS305E can only rate limit according to preset geometric sequences (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 etc).

  • Out of curiosity, what are the use case for managed 8 port switch?

    • OP already listed them: Gigabit speed with QoS, VLAN and network monitoring. It is more for small office. I don't think this is good enough for medium size office.

If you don't know those terms, then this is not for you. Even if you do, most people don't need managed switch, especially for home use. Do you have the need to split your network into multiple, isolated smaller networks (if yes, you need VLAN). QoS and network monitoring, I guess you could argue some of the better home routers are capable of doing the same thing.

Small office with separate vlan of VoIP phones if the handsets have power packs.

In the home you might vlan off home automation network.

To turn off 802.3x Ethernet flow control when you have mixed speed devices on the same switch.
