85 INCH TV Install on Steel Frame Wall

Howdy all. Have run into a problem with installer. I have steel studs in wall that needs to be braced before he will install. Size of TV is 85". Weight of TV is 47.5kg. Any suggestions of what others have done. Thanks in advance.

  • The frame is braced already. Just use another installer that knows what they are doing. The right amount and type of fasteners used and correctly rated TV mount and you will be alright. It's only going to fail if that part of the frame has been modified or cut out due to utilities running through which is unlikely.

The installer is right as the steel studs in the internal walls will be somewhat flimsy and not designed to hold a 50kg tv.

  • What's on the other side of the wall?

    • Wall is external steel house frame. Exterior cladding is rendered masonry block.

      • So you can't come in from the other side of the wall :-)

What you might be able to do is attach a sheet of timber to the wall, then attach the TV mounting bracket to the timber. The timber sheet should be a little smaller than the TV and painted the same colour as the wall so it's not so obvious. An 85 inch TV should be a bit more than four studs wide, and you'd need to attach the timber to all four studs for maximum weight handling. This may mean that you might not get the TV positioned exactly where you wanted it, but it should be solid enough not to collapse the wall.

As brad1-8tsi said, talk to your builder - they may have some ideas.

  • I used one of these for a Sony 85 inch https://www.sanus.com/en_AU/products/mounts/ll22/ .

This particular model has been discontinued but sure you can find something equivalent here https://www.videopro.com.au/cf-235--sanus-tv-wall-mounts-bra… . Videopro are based in Brisbane, I'm sure you can give them a call for an installer they recommend.

      That's not what they asked.

  • These commercial bent sheet metal studs are not designed for lateral load. On top of that, I wouldn't trust anything less than a bolt and nut to hold the mount against the wall.

You'll need to strip off the cladding and add the brace as suggested.

  • Is it a steel frame house wall or an office wall style stud wall?

    • Wall is external steel house frame. Exterior cladding is rendered masonry block.

I'd contact the frame / house manufacturer and ask them. It really depends what gauge steel they have used
