Good price for vitamin D. My mum prefers these, which are gel caps, to the chalky tablets from some other brands.
Should help with the winter blues for anyone in lockdown.

Pricematching Chemist Warehouse, so will be the same price there.
Don't confuse this 400 pack with the 250pack, which is what Coles and Woolworths sell for a few dollars cheaper.

Swisse are one of the most expensive brands with one of the lowest effective scores for their products.

Better off with a higher IU vitamin D pill anyway like:

    https://au.iherb.com/pr/California-Gold-Nutrition-Vitamin-D3…

    https://au.iherb.com/pr/Now-Foods-Vitamin-D-3-High-Potency-5…

Equivalent to 1200 x 1000IU Swisse pills for the same price.

Though if you really wanted a good, independently tested product you'd buy Thorne or LE

    • What is the alternative for Swisse magnessium tablets?

    • Appreciate your post!

i had my d3 status measured once and it was 105 nmol/L when taking 1000IU per day in summer. i cut back to one every other day in summer. 5000IU per day seems excessive

      canstar comparision? … pfft

      • +1

Why would you take 5k per day? You could take it once per week…

        • There's a pretty large debate going on over raising the daily intake again.

It was originally 100IU and was revised up to 400IU and may be up to 1000IU.

… Some individuals who were vitamin D deficient needed 5000 IU to reach blood levels above 30 ng/ml.

          https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18541590/

It's really only suggested you even take Vitamin D if you are actually deficient.
I stopped taking it because a Cochrane review found it doesn't even help with bone density, which was my primary concern.

          • @Telios: Wasn’t questioning the efficacy of vitamin d…
personally it’s been a lifesaver for me.

          • @Telios: What will actually help with bone density?

    • I agree with you here. Thorne is the gold standard.

Thanks. Its posts like that keep me around this place.

From my point of view, the vitamin thing is too full of question marks. It's not super well regulated so you're not sure of what you're getting or how much, and then there's loss of potency as they age or aren't stored right, and really without access to regular blood tests to help give you a target to aim for you're just firing from the hip.
Overseas sources like iherb are even worse from a regulation standpoint.

These are a low enough dose that you can't hurt yourself from overdoing it, and they have a 'premium' feel to them, which works good on the placebo front. And if something does go wrong with them, they have an Australian presence that you can sue the pants off.

      • Yup I hate the current vitamin culture.

I take a few but they're things I can't get easily through my diet (for me as least) so fish oil, curcuminoids (debatable) and fibre etc.

Somehow we've convinced people they need to be taking multivitamins and vitamin C and b complex and zinc and magnesium and on and on.

Fresh vegetables will do a much better job of all of it and you aren't supporting a giant multinational.

Not really a bargain. Same price at chemistwarehouse and don’t have to wait for Australia post to ship

  • Paid $11.69 early August.

  • I don’t normally buy this brand (I stick to brands that have a “practitioner only” brand amongst their brands), but we got a good price for it a while back, so thought we would try it. They do smell a little funky (although maybe our batch?) though.

In terms of efficacy of Vit D supplements, I’ve increased my Vit D levels (though with another brand) using 3000iu while living in Canada (where vit D is needed)… when I’m in Australia it’s not as low and 1000-2000iu seems to be ok. I’m not sure if from vitamins or just the sun in general…
