If you really want to be able to confirm “doneness” then use a coddler; you can screw the lid off to check and put it back in again if you want it harder. It, also, allows you to add in a bit of bacon, cheese etc.
I make mine in the microwave. Crack 2 eggs in a bowl. Add about 1/3 cup cold tap water to the bowl. Microwave 2 mins on 800w. Drain excess water. Your timing may vary depends on whether you keep your eggs in the fridge and how big your eggs are.
How can they be "hard boiled" if you crack the eggs into a bowl?
Good point. I guess I am going to be crucified for this, but for me there isn't much difference between poached eggs and boiled eggs. :)
instruction unclear , eggs exploded all over microwave
Sorry to hear that. Did it really happen? Adding a bit of water was the key to the eggs not exploding in the microwave.
mug blown empty … waterfall flow out of microwave
@dcep: Thanks. That looks messy.
@dcep: So sorry it didn't work for you dude. I think I owe you a beer and/or some eggs if I get the chance to see you IRL. Not sure why it wouldn't work, if it makes you feel any better, I experienced this a few times when I started microwaving eggs.
If you want to give it another go, I have some tips:
1. Give it more water, I know you did put in some already.
2. Set the microwave power lower. my microwave is not a super duper uber microwave, just an el cheapo Samsung one. Maybe try it at 600w? I used to cook my eggs at 450w for 1 min at a time, just to get it to the exact doneness that I wanted. Needs some trial and error.
Pity you didn’t video it.
According to Good Housekeeping magazine, you can make hard boiled eggs in a microwave:
Just place the egg into a bowl of hot water, cover with a plate, and microwave at 50% power for 4 minutes. If you like a runnier yolk, remove and peel the egg now. If you want it more cooked, leave the egg in the water for 2 minutes more before peeling.

put about 1-2cm of water in a pan, get to the boil, put eggs in, lid on, heat down and set a time for 6 minutes (soft boiled) or 7 minutes (hard boiled)
Works every time.
Or, just put eggs in from cold water, set timer for 12mins
Did you mean 1-2 inches to cover the eggs?
I tried a few methods and this is the best, except that I just boil the kettle and pour over the eggs and then simmer for 6 mins. Works perfectly.
No need to cover the eggs. The idea is that they are cooked from the steam (hence the lid on).

Interesting, definitely going to try this. This will hopefully get around the problem of occasional crackage when submerging in boiling water
I use an instant pot
Can you give a few directions on that please.
I follow these instructions https://www.pressurecookrecipes.com/pressure-cooker-soft-har…
Thanks.
sous vide the eggs the night before
Microwave them in this maker
Used to make them in the rice cooker - lay down a couple of wet paper towels, arrange eggs on it, cover and hit the button. Eggs are done when cycle is done.
Or when you're making rice, put eggs in at the same time
Or get an egg cooker like this one.

Or a cheapie $15

Yes, a stove top and a pot works well.
