Recommendations on How to Prevent Dangerous Drivers from Causing Harm to The Public

Would you share any tips on how to protect the public from a dangerous driver?
I have already submitted a police report and sent the dash cam video to dashcamownersaus.

Any additional recommendations on how to correct this driver's behavior?

Short story:
Subaru Liberty 2008 driver attempted to push me from the road by dangerously weaving into my lane, intentionally blocked me from making the lane change for exit, was using horn and flipping the middle finger to intimidate (apart from tailgating).
I think he didn't like the distance I was maintaining from the car in front of me as he was also tailgating me.

Short dash cam video available here:

Update 1: Last chance to have your question answered, the topic will be abandoned in 5 hours. Make sure you use a question mark "?" in your comment if you want me to answer.

Update 2: Thanks everyone for participating in the discussion, we now have around 1,500 views on Youtube and 200 comments in the topic all in less than 36 hours. I did my best to respond to every comment containing a question mark "?". This topic is now officially abandoned and I will not monitor it nor respond to the new comments. The video has also been removed.

Based on the comments, the optimal measure is just to report the dangerous driver to the Police and it is easy to do that online. That may save innocent lives in the future. It is also a good advice to get a rear view dash cam so you can provide better evidence to the Police and report dangerous drivers who tailgate.

The public roads is not a place for aggression and intimidation. Sooner or later your dangerous driving will be captured on video and reported to the Police with the maximum penalty in QLD of 200 penalty units ($26 110) fine or three years imprisonment. If you can't control your anger speak to your GP about that.

  • OP don't go posting videos of your poor driving on youtube and complaining about everyone else.
You remind me of this: https://youtu.be/Q7aKarrlFhM

You are 100% in the wrong here.

    • Maybe that's OP from 3 years ago, trying to start a new viral video now.

The most dangerous operator of an vehicle of any sort is the one whom can’t recognise his/her own incompetencies. OP seems to fall under this camp.

It’s called “Mount Stupid” for a reason and OP is lurking near it.

  • +10

    OP has admitted to speeding.
OP has clearly broken keep left rules.
OP failed to slow down when another car entered his/her lane in a potentially dangerous manner.

OP should not be on the road. (IMHO)

OP, you had the opportunity to do something legal to stop the situation… When the car moved past you at the beginning of the video, you could have applied the brakes, and moved into the left lane when it was safe to do so. This would have changed everything.

Ignoring the apparent right lane hogging…
Was the other driver in the wrong? Yes, he unsafely moved into your lane (annoyed or not, he shouldn't have done it). Your responsibility as a driver is to take defensive action, and you chose not to
You were not being a safe driver.

    • +4

Not to mention this whole thing started because the op needlessly sits on the passing lane, which no doubt infuriated the other bloke.

Drivers like the op are toxic and incompetent, and are a cause of road rage and collisions.

  • +5

Clearly you feel entitled to be on the right lane when you didn't need to. You are the bad driver not the other guy. Stay off the right lane unless you are overtaking!

  • "Would you share any tips on how to protect the public from a dangerous driver?"

I'd have every Toyota dealership have a special room where if someone comes in to purchase a Camry and they proceed with the transaction (to show they're serious) they're asked to follow the sales person to said room, where they're detained until the police arrive and issue with them with some sort of universal PT pass and they get Uber installed on their phone.
Camry drivers are enemy number one on our roads.

(While its pretty serious there are also lashings of sarcasm in there for those who don't get it).

    • +1

Camry drivers are what Volvo drivers were in the 70s and 80s.

  • +1

After seeing the video, it seems like you're the problem.
Get out of the FVCKING RIGHT LANE.

  • +4

HAte people who hog the right lane and drive slowly. Holding up people behind them. You try to let them know by following them closely so they get out of the way but NO they wont get out of the way. You go out of your way and overtake them on the LEFT lane and nudge them but NO they still stay in the ******* RIGHT LANE like they own it.
WHATS WORSE? they have the sanctimonious gall to waste the Police's time and THEN POST ABOUT ON THE INTERNET. What goes on in their heads?!
    THESE PEOPLE NEVER LEARN!

YOU KNOW OP IS WRONG because as soon as he moves his RIGHT LANE HOGGING car out of the way that poor Camry finally speeds through!

    • -2

I suggest you reading my previous replies. It is not possible to keep left if a Subaru driver in the left lane intentionally matches your speed.

    • -3

try to let them know by following them closely so they get out of the way

My trick for FW's/tailgaters like this is to turn the lights ( if during the day ) on to look like your braking .

      • More examples of the amount of idiots on the road. Get your slow driving out of the fast lane.

      • -1

Shows the society we are in getting negged for trying to counter tailgaters to me at least are the most dangerous drivers on the road besides drug effected drivers !

        • +1

          And brake-checking isn't dangerous? Okay.

        • And why did the tailgating happen in this case?

  • +6

OP must be pretty happy with the haul he’s dragged in here.

    • Hope he/she learnt something

  • +2

Get out of the right most lane if you not overtaking. Simple.

  • Yes the Liberty driver is in the wrong, but you're not exactly great either sitting in the right lane. It's 2 demerits and $50 in WA for doing what you've done which is not keeping left unless overtaking.

Good thing you didn't post your numberplate otherwise you might get a knock from the ol popo.

  • +3

OP is exemplifying the Dunning-Kruger effect quite well here.

  • "The public roads is not a place for aggression and intimidation. It's also not a place for you to hog the right lane, refuse to move and dictate your speed to others. I see you have learnt nothing from your time here and I look forward to your future post where this mysteriously happens to you again. Until then, try to stay off the road.

Hey OP was that you this morning on the M3 heading into Brissy CBD, in the far most right lane doing around 90km/h in a 100 zone with no one in front of you and plenty of space in left lane to go into? So eventually I caught up to this car in the right lane as I was going 100 and they were going around 90 as that is what my digital speedo showed when I got close behind them… Then they do a break test on me and slowed down to around 80, pretty smart of them in a 100 zone…. so I overtook in the left lane and kept going 100. I saw in the rear view mirror that they eventually went into the left lane. I don't understand why they couldn't have done that to begin with? Oh I know, they were busy yapping away to their passenger mate….

    • Left foot, aim, open fire

  • Since people in WA at least have stopped giving way at roundabouts to cars coming from the right I have no idea about what people think is safe driving.

Giving way to trafffic from the right was the last bastion of road sanity.

    • Since people in WA at least have stopped giving way at roundabouts to cars coming from the right

The same road rule applies in NSW. The vehicle that enter the roundabout first gets to go first. This should be a national road rule.

      • Yes, it's a race to who gets in the round about first.

  • +3

No sympathy for someone who hogs the right lane. Constantly dealing with such inconsiderate drivers in Melbourne, they're the main reason we have so much traffic.

  • +3

Imagine being so angry about such a slight incident that you boil over it until you get home, then download your dash cam, edit the cam footage, upload it to YouTube, make a post about it on Ozbargain and submit it to the police.

I think most non-enraged people would probably let an incident fade away in a few minutes. The Subaru driver probably hasn't given you a second thought since overtaking you.

Lol. I think based on the comments the optimal measure is for OP to hand in their license, but they came to this conclusion instead.

It was like OP was kicking own goals the whole time and went on to tell people how they scored 50 goals for the match…

  • someone please re-upload OP's video before the mod closes this forum post.

Done… Have archived it to Imgur and linked to it here

      Both of them were idiots.

You seem to have some kind of severe reading disability that's matched only by your poor driving abilities and your knowledge of the road rules.

The comments rather collectively state that you are a threat and a menace to the other road users, and that you probably got your driving license from the back of a cereal box. The time has come for you to hand in your license along with the self-incriminating video that you've stupidly recorded and uploaded to the internet so that the police can fine you.

  • +4

Why is this thread still open considering that ozbargain has already used up all their neg votes?

  • +2

Lol gosh I wish I could get your rego number to report you to the police for being the dangerous driver.
Butthurt had to look for strangers to validate you when you were in the wrong gets hurt more in the process.

  • I honestly think they need to rethink how driver's education and testing is conducted.
Australia has one of the highest hours requirements for learners to take their test, but obviously a lot of people can fib their times.
And just being on the road for a certain amount of time won't make you a good driver so much as a confident driver, which are two different things.

I honestly think the hours should be dropped for learners, with a more comprehensive amount of study material and a written test for actually getting your license.
Yes a practical test is obviously required, but even a kid could drive around for 30 minutes without any major errors, and these are people who will then be given the ability to freely drive as much as they want for years to come.

Everytime those Vicroads social media accounts quizz people there are like 50% that get the question wrong, things as simple as right of way are not properly understood by a huge amount of people on the roads. Not to mention impatient blockheads that think the horn is built into cars to tell cars turning right that you want to go straight. Penalties could also stand to be higher, I don't know why accidents and driving while intoxicated carry fines lower than riding the train on an expired concession card.

  • Do you realise humans can make poor decisions when they are angry?

Perhaps if you didn’t illegally troll the other drivers on the road you’d find that people around you aren’t as angry. And they’d be making fewer bad decisions.

Can’t believe you’d risk the lives of all the other road users by not being considerate or courteous, ignoring the legislation, and generating a state of mind in those around you that will lead to fatalities.

People like you need to learn to share the road. To be aware of their surroundings. To comply with relevant road rules. And to cop it on the chin when their own video demonstrates their despicable behaviour, rather than removing it.

I strongly suggest the community members to report the post asking a mod to edit the post to add an actual summary expressing the collective opinion of the community. As of now, it's some falsified summary that the OP has added which is a steaming pile of BS.

We don't want someone searching the internet for something along the lines, come to this thread and arrive at a wrong conclusion by reading the falsified bull$h!+ conclusion that's up there now.

    • -1

OzB won't do that they'll take the Zuckerbot route 'People should be able to judge for themselves'.

This topic is now officially abandoned and I will not monitor it nor respond to the new comments.

It is time to close this thread.

  • Normally stupid people annoy me, but OP has certainly entertained, today.

  • wait, what happened to the video?

  • Looks like OP has their answer. Thread closed.
