This was super fast delivery for me - I live in Sydney metro, ordered yesterday and it arrived this morning.

    • Same for me.

  • +12

Good price, Still tastes like the dregs of VB and Emu Export though

    • I totally agree. Even long before I started drinking (and making my own) craft beer I could never see why people raved about Crown. Great price if you're a fan of it, though.

      • +8

It’s got a cool bottle. I’m really trying to focus on the positive here!

      • -1

They changed the recepie, used to be a good beer 10+years ago. Btw, how much does your own brew cost you per slab?

        • +2

The most I've spent on ingredients is about $50 and I get a minimum of 65-70 stubbies from that. So, even at a conservative calculation that's about 77¢ each, which would equate to $18.48 per slab of 24. Note that's only ingredients alone, that's not factoring in what I've spent on equipment; but, I've been brewing my own for long enough now that it's well and truly been paid back.

          • @Chazzozz: How much do you reckon you've spent on equipment?

            • @bonnyrigg: Sorry, I only just saw this question today. I've gathered most of my equipment over a period of years so I'd be hard-pressed to pin down a total, but if I had to go back and buy it all at once again I'd say it would easily top $500-$600. But, a beginner doesn't need all that at first. You can get a starter kit for $100-$150 which gives you all the basics that you'll be re-using again & again. Everything after that is something you want to help you improve your craft.

          • +1

@Chazzozz: Thanks on the info. I'm looking to start making my own Ale just wanted to have a rough estimate. So far I have made my own wine and brandy, will give beer a try. Hopefully the first time i make it it will be drinkable lol

CUB can EAD after a recent Reschs preorder fiasco. Ripper dads day deal but.

    • Can thank Aust Post for that

  • +7

CUB is garbage anyway, support Independent Breweries instead.

    • Sure and I agree, but doing so costs about twice this price … besides this stuff is good for giving to beer-heathen friends and family.

While Melbourne has been in lockdown, I've been only supporting Victorian craft breweries. Have had some good drinks from Mr Banks, Deeds and Littlebrew. Grabbed a Mango Creme Brulee sour from Hargreaves Hill yesterday.

But the price doesn't start to compare to this. I would rather quality over quantity, but not everyone is happy spending $12 on a single 440ml beer.

      • Unless its a hazy NEIPA drowning in expensive hops, most craft brewers are charging far too much. But then you have the issue of brewing affordable beers only happens at scale, and they are trying to be small and hip and brew expensive small batch. Either way $12 for a 440ml is robbery.

        • I like my sour beers, which are more expensive than the general ones. I would gladly pay that for some of them. Especially the BlackBerry Parfait sour from Mr Banks

          • +1

@Moventura: A kettle/mash soured beer can be more expensive to produce as they need to sit in a tank for a day or two to naturally sour, if they are just adding acidulated malt and raw lactic acid it doesn't cost much more to produce.

        • +1

Depends how you look at it.

I think $39 for a carton of cats piss is daylight robbery.

I'd rather buy 2x 4 or 6 packs of quality local craft IPA than drink this probably foreign owned, macro lager swill.

For what it's worth Im waiting on a delivery of Mr Banks West Coast IPA 24pack for $95, worth every dollar.

Can't put a price on quality.

          • @Whomastadon: They are cheeky with their 355ml cans, however reasonably priced for a heavily hopped IPA.
You'll note in my comment above I said that $12 for 440ml is robbery, which is is.

            Mr Banks pricing:

            355ml * 24 = 8520ml

            $95 / = 8520ml = 0.0111c per ml

            0.0111c * 440ml = $4.91 for 440ml (way better than $12)

Standard carton = 9L. 9000ml * 0.0111c = $100 a carton which is reasonable for beers that have lots of hops, as hops are very expensive as I said above.

            • @OzzyBrak: Yeah fair enough I must have misread.

Even went to the Craft Beer Festival on the weekend in Perth and they are charging $10 - $14 for a plastic cup of core range beer.

              Annoyed me a little bit.

You'd think they'd relax on the profit margin a bit for their loyal demographic customers.

              • @Whomastadon: I've never understood why beer festivals are one of the most expensive places to buy beer.
Are the organisers charging too much to be there, so they are trying to make back costs?
Is it the whole captive audience thing, so people either have to pay or go home?

I'd always imagined beer festivals as free tastings and cheap beers, as it was all done as marketing and getting to meet new customers. Sadly that isn't the case unless its a couple of small brewers doing a meet-up event, which isn't really a festival anyway.

    Terrible beer

    • +1

Why, i thought they are tasty

  • +18

This was the beer people would drink in the 90's for special occasions.

    • +3

Ha yes!!! I was just finishing high school then and this was the "special drop" at the time for us 18 year olds 😂

      • +3

Growing up, with VB's being the standard tinnie and Crown being "extra" special - I actually thought these were good for a while.

    • +4

Yes - this was the beer the boss would buy for Christmas Eve drinks!

    • +2

Yep - my step father and I still crack open a few Crownies when we catch up - not because I particularly like the beer, but because we've been doing it since the 90's

    • 18th & 21st birthdays in the 90s meant a special occasion = Crownies (But only one each dammit!)

      Simpler times…

  • +4

bogan's would be 'premium' / craft beer

  • +5

That's a lot of BBQ cleaner

    • I was going to say coopers, but they are better suited for cleaning toilets.

  • Do these cartons of beer have an expiration date?

    • Yes

      • When does this batch expire?

        • +10

          Yes

  • Where is Corona?

  • -3

Nothing screams louder than 'woman basher'

  • Thanks. Great for me as a non-drinker. I find Victoria Bitter too bitter for me.

    • +1

Don't think these are suited to a non drinker….

    • +2

If only they would put something alluding to its bitterness on the can

  • +1

I'm guessing it's on special as there are no weddings currently happening in Victoria, as that is the only time I've ever seen anyone drink a crownie.

    • Very true, the last wedding I went to in Feb 2020 had only Crownie's or Corona's.

    • parties in general, 30th 40th 50ths etc

  • Wish they'd bring back the Hoegaarden slabs for $50 like they had back in May.
    Sitting at $65 now.
    Now there's a good beer…

  • +3

I grew up drinking Crownies. It was indeed the premium of all, with little competition at the time, other than VB or Fosters.

Now, I dread the feeling if I ever had to finish 1 Crownie, let alone 24 of them.

This review sums it up well
The premium lager of the CUB range, Crown Lager is anything but premium. It has a very unpleasant chemical aroma, smells like grass when you've just sprayed your backyard with pesticide. And that mouthfeel? How can you have so much carbonation in the glass and such a pitiful, weak feel? Where are the bubbles when I could use them, to add some texture? What a crown turd of a beer. This is actually VB with a slightly modified brewing process and a outrageous mark up.

    • I recall that being said on the brewery tour about 20 years ago at CUB, however, i suspect that less POR hops are used in Crown Lager.
The only way to drink vb is icy cold, not that I've had it for about a decade.

  • Can anyone recommend a slab of great value, good beers in time for father's day?

    • +1

      St etienne from aldi. $33.

    • Any craft brewed session ale would piss all over this shit.

This is what bogans thought was fancy in the 80s/90s.

I know coz my old man think so haha

    • Mountain Goat Steam Ale, currently $59 at Dan Murphys. Usually around $70

  • I picked up a 16 pk of balter for 40.xx on ebay, using the party21 coupon, however there were only 2 cases left. Captain sensible is also there but only 5$off.

  • Vote here

    • Wow, seems like almost all Australian beers down voted.

  • You know it's good. It has a fancy arse bottle.

  • So do they bubble wrap and put it in another box or what
