"Hi-Fi Quality" Monitor-Style Headphones under $99

OK. Before anyone argues with me, I want some half-decent "Hi-Fi Quality" Monitor-Style Headphones, at a maximum cost of $99. $65, even better. $49, better again.

Yes, I'm looking for a deal. That's why I'm on Ozbargain. I want the best I can get for the money. They will be for turntable listening and some audio editing. I am most likely going to build an Oatley Electronics valve headphone amp kit to go with them. This is what passes for Hi-Fi. Purists need not apply. Yes, I'd probably like a nice pair of Grado's, but that's probably not going to happen.

The headphones must meet the following requirements:

  • Respected Brand - Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Edifier, Koss, etc.
  • Excellent quality sound
  • Over-Ear
  • Noise Isolating

So far I am looking at the Edifier H-840, Audio-Technica ATH-M20x, and the Koss UR20.

The Koss ones are cheap at $49 (Free Shipping): https://headphones.com.au/product/koss-ur20-over-ear-headpho…

Audio Technica $75 with Free Shipping: https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/collections/headphones/produc…

  • Much better pumping that $40 for the headphone amp into the headphone budget, you won't get anything good out of an amp for that price. I'd recommend something like the M40X for $129 instead

    • It is a small tube amplifier which gives at least a likeness of valve tube sound. So it should sound fairly good to the ears in the way that the "live" sound of my LP's sound better to me than CD's generally do. For private listening via headphones it is probably just fine. Of course, this is all subjective. I have a fairly modern Yamaha Amp with B&W and Luxman Speakers. I don't get into the high end audio gear. I am looking to get the best sound I can for a (very) budget price. Somewhere out there is a bargain deal that gives me what I want :)

  • I'd rather buy in-ear earphones really at that price point. Its a personal preference though, Shure SE215 if you can push your budget or even the Audio Technica LS series.

  • If you can find an old pair of ATH AD700 laying about your house, that is a great self driving headphone. It benefits only a little from a dedicated amp.

  • U will get what u pay for being stingey :p u have to spend around 200 bucks minimum for the good driver head phones.

    • OK. So what I want is the $200 headphones on a super deal for less than $99 then :)

  • +1

Sennheiser is a good brand. I gave my brother the hd dj8 model because it was sitting in my room for years lol.

    • I bought some Ford-branded Sennheiser Headphones back in the day from Jaycar on a really cheap deal (2 for $40, I think). They were actually surprisingly good.

  • OK. After reading a whole lot of reviews, I went with the Audio Technica $75 with Free Shipping: https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/collections/headphones/produc…
