Best value laptop for around $1800?

I'm looking for a laptop around $1800 that has 16gb of RAM and a graphics card as well.
I'm dont really care what brand it is, or what colour. Just looking for a good deal.

Also I was considering waiting to see what Lenovo/Dell do over the next couple months. Should I wait or christmas/black friday?

Im going to be using some engineering programs and playing some games on it but for the majority of the time it will be used for yt/fb/ozbargin etc.

Thanks team, really appreciate any advice you can give <3

    • Thats a good deal but only has 8gb of RAM :(

      • You could always add more ram yourself. It doesn't seem to be particularly good value though.
If you can wait, I'd wait until the next Dell 20% ebay sale. Previous deals for G5 laptops around $1800 show some great deals

        • So you reckon the G5's are the way to go? Dosen't Dell price jack before those 20% off sales?

          • @aquikdeal: Nope, Dell is one of the few sellers that don’t price jack.

Dell G5 SE for $1583, it happened twice in the past 2 months, could happen again soon.

Is there a dedicated graphics card with this? It just says: AMD Radeon™ Graphics with shared graphics memory

  • Engineering student? What kind of demanding programs/games are you looking to run on it? There's definitely a compromise to be made between specs and build quality/durability at that price point, so IMO it really depends on how fast a machine you need.

    • Nothing too heavy. Im looking at some modelling software like CAD, ANSYS and SolidWorks. These programs will be seldom used and for the majority of the time it would be used for general usage.

Ansys and SolidWorks can be pretty heavy so I’d definitely recommend 16GB RAM and a decently fast CPU. GPU isn’t too important for those - you honestly would be fine with integrated graphics unless you want a fast GPU to play games.

The other thing I’d point out is that unless you’re playing a lot of games, having a 120Hz or 144Hz display is mostly useless. Would be better to get a nice bright IPS 60Hz panel instead of a dim 1080p TN/VA high refresh rate one.

This leaves you with two sorts of choices at $1800: gaming laptops if you want a fast GPU; and business laptops if you don’t care about GPU as much.

Business laptop generally will only have integrated GPU, but they tend to be built much more solid than budget gaming laptops, and have much nicer keyboard/trackpad. Could have a look at ThinkPad T14/T15 (or P14/P15 with Quadro GPU), HP EliteBook line, Dell Latitude, Dell XPS is pretty popular EDIT: but XPS has reliability issues. MacBooks are honestly also great, but I wouldn’t recommend because you need to run Windows-only CAD programs.

Workstation grade laptop with a nice GPU is too expensive, you’d have to go with a gaming laptop if you want fast graphics. I don’t know too much about these, but the other answers seem to have some good options.

  • If you don’t mind refurbished, you should check out the Dell Outlet. I recommend going for i7 and GTX1650. You can get 8GB model and upgrade it to 16GB yourself, just double check that the model doesn’t have soldered RAM. All the G series have upgradeable RAM and I think the Inspiron 15 and XPS 15 also allow it (smaller models might not). Also Alienware m15 R2 doesn’t allow you to upgrade the RAM, though that’s probably above your price range anyway

But still you can find deals.

    • I almost pulled the trigger, but it dosen't have a graphics card. Soooooo close
