they probably have 20,000 1st gen core i's and core 2 duo's that will be sold at half retail price..

    • LoL, agree with that.

erm being harvey's I'd expect them to be AMDs more than Intels.

      • +1

i thought HN got rid of most of their AMD stock back when they had that '2 for 1' sale?

  • Didn't they have a better ps3 deal going?

  • I'm guessing they smartened up from their "2 for 1" deals and just give 50% off instead now so there aren't a whole heap of "unwanted gifts" popping up on Gumtree at inflated prices? ;)

Nar it's because they can't say "Up to" 2 for 1. Whereas they can say "Up to" 50% off and simply sell it at retail (making sure to put a RRP of +20% above release price and telling the customer it's 'below cost')

      • Who said they couldn't mark up for 2-4-1 sales…?!

      • izzeho….that comment represents everything that I, and most ozbargain folk, hate about hardly normal and their shitty business practices. + for you my friend, I wish I could give you 3!

You're both wrong. Whenever harvey norman have sales they jack everything up to RRP and apply the sale from there. So during the 2for1 promotion, you effectively got the product for half the RRP. The normal selling price is usually around 10-20% off RRP. For this sale, they will again jack everything up to RRP and then apply a discount of 0-50%. If you want to work out whether you're getting an actual deal, make sure the 'discount' is around 40-50% off the RRP.

And just another note, incase you didnt know (aiming at izzaho), the manufacturer sets the RRP not the retailer. I.e. if asus set the RRP on a laptop for $1m, thats their perogative and HN quoting that is perfectly normal and accepted business practice. Theres nothing wrong with retailers quoting the RRP, its good for comparing products within a manufacturer's range, and the savvy shopper only takes it into account for that purpose. The only issue arises when the retailer misquotes and inflates the RRP.

The law states that sale prices must be based on regular prices.

"Advertising or promotions of 'savings' or 'discounts' on the RRP of goods and services are designed to convince you that you are getting a good deal because the price is less than the RRP.
If traders do not normally price their goods at the RRP, it may be misleading to give you the impression that they do.

If you see a retailer doing anything illegal point it out to them and let them know that you can/will report them to the ACCC.

Im not disputing that jacking up prices to RRP is wrong. But im pretty sure theres a loophole there where is the sale is advertised as 'OFF RRP' then they can get away with it. So if theres terms and conditions associated with a sale, they could exploit that loophole.

All I wanted to point out is that a) manufacturer sets RRP and b) 50% off RRP is nearly always a pretty great price.

Just went and had a look at laptops. Most were 10-20% off, nothing amazing. The best deal I thought was on a Toshiba F750/030 in white. RRP is supposedly 1999 so was 50% off at 999. Second gen i7, 8 gb RAM, 2gb GT540m, 750gb hard drive.

  • There are a few people that have reported decent prices on dv6
s, including 6136tx and 6137tx. The deals will vary depending on the store though.

  • finally got two toshiba p750/02j , i7 2nd gen, gt540m, 4gb ram, at $759 each at office works, price matching. Thanks for the staff there calling a couple of hn in victoria for the prices.

Anyway, my friends will go back to hk soon so another 10% off, not bad
