The most important thing to learn about Wordpress when starting out is that you should not be using Wordpress. The project is run by clowns.

I hate off the self CMSes in general. But in a previous life when I was a web developer, before my role changed to be software engineer, I preferred Drupal, was more developer focused than the fantasy of "leave everything up to Joe the plumber" to mange and update his site and custom plugins.

Note that this book was published in 2014. There's been a LOT of changes in WordPress since then.

Don't waste your time with Wordpress.
    Learn Node or Django.

  • Wordpress is fine if you're doing a simple site, same as the others. Many people don't want nor need code— they just want to put up a static site. WP is okay for that, as are the others (Wix, etc).

Within WP, you can absolutely build a child-theme and do what you wish. Not getting the hate for WP, actually?
