I've got a similar silver one - prior style? Runs super hot when in use, and not particularly fast
I would stay away from this. I have exactly the same one, and whilst it's plastic (common to this type of drives), it gets really warm when moving data in and out, and would usually error when transferring big chunks (like a 4tb iso). Probably ok for small docs but not ideal for big media or iso files.
one word
slow
it was $19 probably in 2005
I had one, agreed: slow and gets very hot. Avoid.
Samsung BAR Plus 32GB - 200MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive Titan Gray. You can get 1 for $14 on amazon
Gets very hot but havent had file transfer issues. Good for the coin part of your wallet for emergencies

The USB plug is made of plastic, I can't believe it will last long when being rubbed and squashed by metal coins.
I have one of the older Sandisk FIT drives, with a metal USB plug, but the "handle" part is plastic. I kept it in my wallet, in the coin section. The handle no longer stays on the drive, and the rest of the drive falls apart without it.
Cool. In my experience it's been fine.
Can someone please recommend a good alternative USB 3.1 flash drive that is reasonably fast.
Thanks
You don't need USB3.1, USB 3.0 is fast enough. No USB drives come close to meeting the speed of USB3.0 (500Megabytes per second), it's pointless putting a faster USB interface on a device that can't go that fast.
Micro SD cards are pretty fast, and you can (apparently) get USB3 micro-SD readers that are about the same size as this FIT drive.
Here's a tiny USB3 micro-SD reader I found with a quick browse:
https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32583508029.html
The description of the card reader says "Was getting 56MB/s writting and 92MB/s reading speed on Sandisk 32gb extreme card."
Here's a benchmark of the card from that claim, 32GB Sandisk Extreme, and all the card readers they tested it with got a write speed of 50MB/s or a little higher:
https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/sd-cards/sandisk-e…
The 64GB Extreme pro card is even faster, most card readers got a write speed of 75MB/s:

Here's a review of the USB FIT drive in this deal, while the sequential write speed is good (48.8 MB/s), the random 4k write speed is less than 1MB/s.

Thank you so much for the detailed response Russ.
Really appreciate it.
I just found a tiny brand-name reader, one of the ones in the benchmarking tests:
https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/card-readers/lexar…
That model seems no longer available, but here's a more recent model, select "single slot":

@Russ: Ordered… Thank you so much for your help.
@pauper: Glad to help. I have a tiny reader like this, but I don't need crazy high speed, so I went for a physically-smaller USB2 card reader that easily fits into the coin section of my wallet. While I only have a 128GB card in it, it's insane to think that I could put a 1 terabyte card into it. I don't think you'll find USB FIT drives of that capacity!
How do you get it for $8.99? It comes up @ $12.40 for me.
Had one and this model is notorious for overheating. Like actually feels like it's going to burn you when you take it out.
Stay away.
I have an anxiety attack just looking at it
