    Thanks OP.

  • I've always dreamed of making a song (trip hop, acid jazz, downtempo) like this. What can someone recommend as a good and cheap/free place to start?

FL Studio does a free trial, you can try that out? If you're a beginner and want something with an easy learning curve but can do some detailed stuff, I'd try out the iMaschine app (on iOS only, $14.99 but worth it). If you like it, you can graduate to a Maschine Mikro for ~$380 which you can make some really quality tracks with (I find the NI stuff most intuitive for beginners). Then you'll have the bug, and want to buy a Maschine MK3 or Studio and really get into it. Of course there is a whole lot of different hardware and software, it really is a rabbit hole.

My other advice is avoid some of the crappy freeware out there, usually have steep learning curves which can really turn off beginners.

Reaper is the best free DAW by miles

      • Can the "60 days of evaluation free, with full functionality" be extended?

        • +1

pretty sure the trial period has no end date. you can purchase a license whenever you want for $60 from memory with free updates for life. Unless theyve changed it

          • @swxfty: Thank you. They 'say' it expires in 60 days now. It certainly looks good.

            • +1

@sceptical: yeh it "expires" in 60 days. you can still use it though

            • +2

@sceptical: So like how WinRAR "expires"…

            • +1

@sceptical: Once your evaluation period is over it then makes you wait on start up to see if you will buy the licence but eventually gives in and lets you use it.

      • If you say so

      • Thanks all. Might give Reaper a go.

    • Ableton has 90 day trial

    • I had a look at this LMMS product a couple of months back. I found a series of youtube videos on how to install and use it, the first one is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBXSN_ZGi3o (not a Rickroll, I promise).
