NBN Fibre Optic Lead In Cable

Hopefully I have put this in the correct forum. Just wanted to see if anyone has ran a fibre lead in cable for future connection.

I am due to connect to FTTC shortly and am having my phone line reran underground. (Existing cable is roughly 40 years old and aerial ran- figures running new cable and underground should maximise performance) I wanted to pull through a fibre cable as well to save hassle later on. Is anyone familiar with what spec the cable has to be? I haven’t been able to find any info online about nbn approved fibre optic lead ins.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

As far as I know, you have to have FTTC installed first if you want you want to upgrade to FTTP through NBN. I found information about the fibre optic manufacturer, dont know anything about specs.

Pretty Sure NBN wont let you run your own cable in. As this is one of the many ways they are trying to recoup the blowout costs for the rollout and now trying to charge people more money for a cable that should have been installed by them by default.

Also unless you know what you are doing fiber optic cables i wouldn’t recommend running yourself its a bit more involved than people think. I have attached a link of the exact cables being used for the NBN Good Luck.

I Ran my own HFC cable just because i didnt want an ugly install by them and it was weeks of telling them there is a cable there and then finally they came pulled out my cable and put the exact same cable in ( So the Subcontractor could claim they did the Job ) before anyone turned my internet on Stupid system they are running… So political and its almost harder work to make them understand that you have put a cable in thats not registered in their system….

Installing your own fibre LIC is pointless. NBN won't use it.

IIRC you can’t just run your own cable and expect to be FTTP instead of FTTC.

There is an actual process you can follow with NBNCo to change your connection type. It does cost, but they will come out and assess your site and provide a quote and if you go ahead they do all the work to run the line to your pit. I do think it costs ~$300 just for the site visit and quote, but I believe this is the only way to change your connection type.

Also FTTP replaces the copper phone line, so you are wasting money to rerun that.

    • Agree. The upfront cost is only for quote though. You will have to pay the actual cost later.

I would not bother with the fibre cable, I doubt NBN would use it. The DPU (the active equipment that connects to your copper leadin) also does not support a fibre connection, so you'd need to get onto the technology choice program and likely pay exorbitant fees to get a FTTP connection, and this would include them installing a new fibre drop cable anyway

Customers can put whatever they want in their LiC between the PL and the wall. What they can’t do is to play around the LiC between the PL and the pit.

Op, the subbie will provide you with a new LiC because you have an aerial drop. They also make more money this way. This LiC from pit to your wall is owned by NBN which unfortunately means that you can’t play with it.

I am due to connect to FTTC shortly and am having my phone line reran underground. I wanted to pull through a fibre cable as well to save hassle later on.

Don't bother, NBN won't use anyone else's 'cables' only their own, BUT they will use your conduits.

So what you can do it make sure the underground conduit is to NBN spec (for sizing and corners), and they have easy access to pull the fibre cable through (hint leave a draw rope in).

My other hint is NBN installers are LAZY, and will put the NBN hardware wherever the conduit ends. So make sure it 'ends' where you want this hardware installed in the future. ie you want it in the rear of the garage, then make sure the conduit pops up there, because if it pops up on the other side of the house to the garage, guess where NBN will install the hardware?

The good news is that NBN recently changed FTTC to FTTP pricing and its WAY cheaper now, should be $3-4k to upgrade.

Thanks everyone for your replies 🙏 😊

I can’t believe NBN have made it so difficult. I was thinking I would save myself some money and just have the cable ready to go for a few years down the track. Clearly I was wrong there.

Also, with regards to me rerunning my phone line- I believe this will not be included in install with NBN & that is why I am doing it. As I already have an existing Telstra line (unused at the moment) I believe they will use that by default. I am planning to get someone to replace this connection prior to NBN attending (I want it ran underground+new twisted cable to maximise speeds) as I believe they will be ok to use this. This could then be suitable as a draw wire down the track.

Yep by default the existing Telstra LIC is reused for FTTC.
