@kahn: Sounds like every oligopoly and monopoly that relies on its brand to cut corners. The last thing you can call them is incapable.

  • Suspicious would be a fake Moutai

    • +1

You mean Costco selling fake products overall?

    • +1

Normally you will find a little torch inside box of 6. That special torch helps you to check authentic labelling.

      • Is it just a black light?

  • +5

Seriously 500ml of liquor for $389.99 (discounted price) and this is a bargain??? Am i missing something?

    • +6

Depends on the date. They can go for $10000 for very matured ones.

      • you talking about my liquor or my escorts?

        • Older the milf the lower the price though

        • That's $3.6m USD is across the whole auction lot. According to your article the highest individual bottle was ~$121,000 AUD which is still pretty insane.

          • +1

            @joshk:

The most expensive bottle of baijiu auctioned so far is a 1935 Lay Mau that was sold for RMB 10 million (US$1.46 million) in Guizhou, Moutai’s home base, in 2011.

    • +2

This is some of the most expensive baijiu, some go for much more

      • then wouldn't this be a CHEAPER one?

  • -8

These stealz our dataz from the inside?

    • +1

Not directly, but the money you paid on it might help the big bros.

  • Great price, need to get Costco membership then. But the limit of 3 bottles per member is a bummer.

    • +1

      bummer

Yes, normally that is the quick way to get drunk.

      • Taiwan is NOT China

          Tell that to CCP

        • +1

Taiwan is the Republic of China

        • +1

Culturally Taiwan is very much China. In fact it is the Republic of China

Dan Murphy’s you can use 5% off wish GC though…

  • +4

Why are so posts being negged just for asking questions?

    • +25

The casual racism is probably what's attracted the downvotes. So casual the poster doesn't even realise they're being racist.

      • +7

If only you knew what they think of the rest of the world

        • -1

what they think of the rest of the world
          Go on

        • +3

I'm ethnically Chinese, so I definitely know it. Doesn't change that some of the comments here are a bit on the nose.

          • -1

@kwchaz: It's impossible to be "ethnically Chinese" - the word "Chinese" is a nationality, not an ethnicity (despite the genocide being committed by the Han-controlled CPC against minority groups in an attempt to make it otherwise). It's more accurate to state you're ethnically Han, Tibetan, Zhuang, Miao, Uighur or the long list of the other ethnicities that the Han people have attempted to eradicate.

      • Casual racism isn't the only reason posts here are being downvoted. This is ozbargain, where people downvote anything minor that rubs them the wrong way, like expecting people to know the answer to the question before the question needs to be written or answered, or calling them out. We have an oddly specific demographic here. If you can't conform or don't converse the way they do here, you get downvoted.

      • +6

More like being snowflakes. No need to make everything about racism.

VB coffee is a good pre workout

    • +5

Tom Yum soup isn't even Chinese.
Surely one of the most unintelligent racist posts here.

When I visited people in China they basically force fed me this stuff for a whole week. Felt like I had a whole bottle most nights. One of the drunkest weeks of my life, with constant shots that I was expected to drink. Fun, but a little pushy and way too expensive for my liking.

Didn't much like the stuff, burns like petrol, but came to appreciate the quality. I never had a hangover the next day, the mornings were always pretty good.
The only exception was one night when I got sick of the spirits and suggested beers instead. I probably only had 3 or 4, didn't get very drunk, and felt terrible after.

Then again, binge-drinkability is not a particularly useful trait for a $400 bottle. Much better to have that in a Johnny Red or something

    • +1

The older the moutai the smoother it is. It might be $400 for a bottle of ‘18, but you’d be looking at significantly more for a bottle of ‘08.

      • +4

Still tastes like crap. I have a bottle yesrs old.

        • The fact is Moutai is an acquired taste, I would say most Chinese people are not be able to appreciate it, myself included. To me, it tastes and smells funny. A lot of people tend to drink it for the name and it gives them "face" on a dinner table. I would recommend Wu Liang Ye instead which is much easier drinking for people who are just starting to get into Chinese rice spirits.

  • +4

Good stuff. Had them when hosted by some government official when we visited PRC some years back.

Easily one of the most fragrant and smooth liquor I have ever had. The Americans in the team loved it too. 4 bottles down for the night, amongst the 15 of us.

    • +4

True, I made it sound like it tastes worse than it does. It’s pretty good, but an acquired taste, like any spirit
It’s strong, but not without some pleasantness to it.

      • +1

Yea. I was genuinely surprised on how good it was.

Before that, always sceptical about Chinese white "wine"/liquor.

These things (genuine ones) are more rare than Japanese whisky because the rise of PRC middle class (as well " gifting).

Alot of fakes, and those are the meth that people have tried.

Some people criticising this drink, when they probably never heard or even tried casu marzu…

  • +1

This is a terrible price though.

  • +1

This must be a joke. This is “normal” price I’d say - normal=over priced. Used to be $200 only a couple years ago.

  • +5

Will the Daigous export this to mainland for profit

    • +1

      Haha. Likely.

Ppl in the PRC are happy to pay, but not trusting local source for genuine products.

Some person hosted us said his Penfold 389s are "water stock" via HK (with a premium) despite Penfold officially sell them there. That dude didn't trust local supplies.

  • +4

It tastes as classy as the bottle it comes in and isn’t worth the plastic it’s surrounded by.
But this is ozbargain and thats a good price, bought 10 😂

  • Is this the drink they said you can live up to 100 years?

    • +4

Yes. Without it, you'd live at least a 100 years but you're limited to "up to 100 years" with an ailing liver.

      • Ha ha. V quick.
…. Live up to a 100 years indeed, you can say that for Coca cola, Whiskey, Cod-liver oil, daily enemas…..

        • Mmmm. Daily cod liver oil enemas.

  • +8

I am pretty sure it is expensive as Australia imposed an anti-dumping tariff of 202.70% on Chinese spirits, just like China looking to imposed the same fee on Australian wine.

    • +2

Your comments won’t be popular, as you are not allowed to talk about what Aussie’s has done only the other way around

    • Genuinely curious to know where you read this.

  • +5

I don’t drink but here is the historical fact:

Moutai is named after the town with the same name near Zunyi in Renhuai, Guizhou Province, where liquor distillery has a very long history. The Moutai of today originated during the Qing Dynasty and first won international fame when winning a gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

Moutai originated during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), when northern Chinese distillers introduced advanced techniques to local processes to create a distinctive type of baijiu.

This is, without a shadow of doubt, the most disgusting booze I've ever tasted. If you gifted me a bottle, I'd pour it down the sink (and then worry about the drain pipes).

    • +3

Told cha not to buy them off Aliexpress! Haha.

    • Why the downvoted on this comment? Clearly ausmomo found it disgusting. It's his taste preference.

    • Haha

  • Stanklicious.

  • +2

The only time I tried Baijiu I was poured a shot at a restaurant. I couldn't finish half of it, even with trying to have it with food. It tasted like a slightly sweet sickening rot. So much for $20/shot.

I'd say definitely try before you buy a whole bottle.

I never knew it could be this expensive, or even more expensive. Clearly some people like it..
