Games are for Epic, not Steam.

  • wow this is so solid. too bad ive already bought and played hitman from humble bundle

  • +5

First hitman is good but hitman 2 has way cooler maps.

  • +7

My epic library is now getting pretty serious thanks to these freebies!

    • It's almost similar if not bigger than xbox game pass for me. I only missed the very early few. Today one of the two giveaways was a rotation/repetition as epic has given it away for free before.

      • +2

Yeah I missed GTA and everything before that but since then I’ve snagged them all. My steam library is full of a lot of junk but most of these epic deals have been pretty good games. Probably will still only play one or two of them though!

        • GTA was fairly recent. This is the second year they have been giving away free games. I've been at it since Feb-2019 and I missed a few early ones. They have given some away some really "epic" freebies before GTA, though GTA got them the most marketing. They gave away Batman Arkham Trilogy, Lego Batman Trilogy, Metro 2033 Redux, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Watch Dogs, etc. to name a few.

    • Haven’t got the chance to install Epic launcher yet, but I’m happy to see my Epic library becomes bigger and bigger everyday!

I think there’s a good chance that many of the ozbargainers have almost exactly the same library, which must be quite unique in the Epic user base I reckon.

      • Probably less unique than you'd think XD

      • while I have the epic launcher installed, I launch via the GOG launcher (You can link an epic account)

        So one less launcher helps!!

  • +1

    Great games

  • Bugger I thought it was for the Hitman Collection….oh well its free I guess.

  • Nice, I have the prologue on Steam but this looks like the complete Season One (Quoted from Epic below):

Featuring all of the Season One locations and episodes from the Prologue, Paris, Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, Colorado, and Hokkaido. As Agent 47, you will perform contract hits on powerful, high-profile targets in an intense spy-thriller story across a world of assassination.

  • +1

I really enjoyed the Shadowrun games, a great freebie as far as I'm concerned.

  • +1

Shadowrun games are pretty good, awesome for free. Haven't played hong kong yet.

  • +3

Havent used steam in a long time, and removed it from startup.
Origin launcher, cant even remember their last freebie.

Epic launcher? Gets used every Friday.

    • +5

I stopped using steam a long time ago. Publishers on steam price gouge and rip off Australians in particular. A lot of the time it's cheaper if I swap regions and buy in another currency or even $USD, but even now Steam is going to block that from being possible.

The main marketed selling point of digital distribution when it first came out was that it is cheaper since there's next to 0 overhead vs bricks and mortar store, but we're frequently seeing physical copies being sold for cheaper than online.

      • -2

Steam gouges the developers and consumers, publishers aren't given much control of the prices. Steam makes them decide. That's the price of the platform.

Epic makes $300 million a month from fortnite alone, and google and apple were making 30% of the money they were making through the apps, for having them on the app store.
        https://www.businessofapps.com/data/fortnite-statistics/

It's great that epic is using that money to give away games, and developers are getting money from their promotion. They also promote unreal engine, and learning how to make games and get involved. I hope steam learns from this and also can promote free games and support developers with the massive wealth they generate monthly, but by then, Epic would have given away all the best games.

        • +3

What do you mean by Steam makes the publishers decide on what price they charge? All they do is take a 30% cut. Publishers decide the ultimate price?

        • +3

Steam gouges the developers and consumers, publishers aren't given much control of the prices. Steam makes them decide. That's the price of the platform.

Publishers have 100% control of the price they choose to set it at, and steam takes a cut. It's 100% the publisher's problem to deal with if they choose to agree to distribute through steam. Steam doesn't make them decide what price to set it at.

          • +1

@Blitzfx: I stand corrected. I was thinking in terms of the price point that games are set. Steam helps them decide that price point based on sales and revenue both parties are expected to get. An indie game vs a AAA game for example. This is why steam always has those price patterns for new release, on sale and after 6 months.

How they set region pricing is beyond me. I'm in Japan, and the price for a Japanese game on steam (i.e. monster hunter) vs the price in AU is much more expensive.

        • +4

I hope steam learns from this and also can promote free games and support developers with the massive wealth they generate monthly, but by then, Epic would have given away all the best games.

Steam has launched plenty of initiatives to help developers and modders, and has unified a lot of the PC gaming community around a central platform.

Steam is actually a good platform that has money invested into it. Yes, Epic is giving away free games, but their launcher is trash - just like Origin and everyone else wanting a piece of the pie.

They're not trying to win you over to the Epic Launcher by being better than the competition - all they are doing is throwing their massive $$$ around to undercut the competition.

          • @Harold Halfprice: I have to say you are right about this too. the greenlight initiative helped a lot of people get their games on steam.
It's probably far less than I imagine for people complaining about the price steam charges to put the game on their platform. I think consoles do this too. You have to spend money to make money.
And steam is catching up, they are giving away free games from time to time. A large percentage of the games now I have are all free. Look at the consumer I have become…

        • No they don't and they never have.
Literally entirely up to the publisher as to what the price of the game is.

      • +4

They are not ripping off Australian, they do favour to those who struggle in terms of power of purchase. If you swap regions, of course you'll find lower prices. Lol.

        • Oh really? Then why do 4 year old games sell for $90 (Civilization 6)?
It's not just currency conversion, quite often games sell for significantly cheaper in other regions including the US (which isn't exactly a poor country).

          • @steelpanther: Cos Australia is wealthier than the states.

          • +4

@steelpanther: Because the publishers set the prices.

It is the publisher who is the problem there.

    • Steam was for the last generation. Epic is targeting the next generation.

    • Steam can't die soon enough. The store is a mess and all the features are half baked.

  • +1

Sorry Epic, Steam gave away Hitman first ;)

Got Hitman for free previously through Steam via this getaround- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/530519

    • +5

Sorry foobat but that's incorrect. Steam did NOT give away HITMAN.
You exploited a loophole or flaw.
You even acknowledge that by saying it is a getaround.
What Epic does are true, easy giveaways. No loophole exploitation required.

      • I didn't do this workaround hoping Epic would give it away.

      • Totally agree with you Lysander. Just mentioning that there was a Hitman freebie previously, wouldn't be the first time a loophole was exploited by the public.

As much as I love that Epic is giving away free games, Steam is still miles ahead of Epic in terms of UI though.

BTW - Thanks for posting heaps of game deals on OzBargain - love your work!

  • +1

The entire shadowrun series is amazing - I paid full price for it.

  • i have question.

why Epic games give us free game?

    GTA, Hitman, Witcher.. etc.

They won't do business at the expense

    • +5

They made enough money and now they share with humanity for a better world. Do you really think they lose money?

      • +5

Seriously? You really think they are giving out games out of the goodness of their heart?

    • +1

      They gave away Witcher?

      • +1

        No. He is wrong.

      • +1

        Not yet

    • +1

because free shit is the only way to get people to use their store and platform

      • defending a DRM platform, not getting paid for it, not even getting free games for your effort
isn't that a gig for suckers?

        • I think your mistake was assuming his attack on epic was a defense of steam

  • +10

This is my library so far, thanks OzBargain.

  • Man.. Epic needs to save their money somewhat.. considering their war against Apple (and possibly Google). lol

But I'm not complaining about free games.. Thanks OP

    • I'm wondering if they don't have a deal to only pay if people actually load the game and play more than an hour…. That would make these giveaways pretty cheap comparatively :o

    • Epic can't win. Nearly 9/10 American teenagers own an iPhone and Apple owns iPhone. Epic needs Fortnite on iOS a lot more than Apple does. The next Fortnite will gladly give apple 30% in exchange for the hundreds of millions that will make up the other 70%. Epic doesn't win anything by letting someone else fill their niche on the App Store.

  • It's weird that Epic only has H1 & H3, but not H2.
It is better to play H1 in H2 as legacy expansions, or maybe even wait for H3 to have the full series in a single client.

    • Just wait for the Blood Money remaster.

I remember playing the original Shadowrun from 2007 on the 360 and later released as a Games for Womdpws title in 2008. Shadowrun was a multiplayer first-person shooter without any single player campaign. Much the same as Quake III Arena was back in 1993. So probably why not inclided. Still looking forward to this collection.

Loving all the free Epic Games. A few repeats but overall a new game or two every week is cool.

Makes sense given hitman is going epic exclusive soon.

    • +5

      exclusivity hurts consumers.

      • Not if they are free mate lol.

        • +9

Hitman 3 will only be available on the epic store. Consumers loose when there is only one place to buy a product.

      • -4

Why did that big beardy guy make Half Life exclusive to Steam then. And it's not because he was too heavy to bend down to pick up a CD.

        • +4

The same reason Fortnite wasn't added to Steam and was exclusive to Epic — they developed and published the game. Steam doesn't bribe publishers to remove their games from other stores. Try again.

          • -4

@daitro: Steam is pretty silly then, to not secure more exclusives for their own store. Steam is silly in a lots of ways. Steam was earning 30% of every online sale for decades, was the most profitable company per employee in America. But they couldn't make a good social system, Discord did it better for free and is now the gaming social standard. I don't see why we even need Steam anymore and I don't see Gabe tolerating the inevitable decline in profits and marketshare. Valve is too top-heavy to exist in the real world. Valve is like Blockbuster when Blockbuster turned down the cheap offer to buy Netflix, because Blockbuster thought they would be on top of the world forever. However, previous returns are not an indicator of future performance.

  • +3

The Shadowrun games are great, worth the time.

  • Got it, "Thank you for buying", thanks mate!

  • +1

Hopefully everyone can snag some Shadowrun gameplay before Cyberpunk. Similar Cyberpunk themes (with added fantasy elements). Top-down RPG - it's an awesome staple of RPG gaming.

  • +1

just got a dell G5 for video editing, looks like a might get my game on now too!

  • Can someone tell me why this is available on Mac from Steam but Epic only have the PC version?

    • You mean Windows? As an Apple computer is also a PC (Personal Computer).

      • Sorry, yes Windows. Why does Epic only offer the games on a Windows platform? I know they have in the past also offered the Mac version - but this is only about 10% of the time (or so it seems)

        • Have you tried it on an Apple PC?
Sometimes it is licensing issues - SimCity 4 and Borderlands have different distributors for Windows and Apple - they can only advertise with what they have the license for. But if it is a Steam key, then you can activate in Steam and download any version even if it only states one of them.
Maybe Epic only acquired the rights to give the Windows version away as freebie.

  • Thanks for posting OP!

  • This post needs editing, current freebies have expired and the other 2 are live now.
